This place is great when you are looking for something specific. Be aware!! If you have A.D.D like me... lol you will go nuts and completely loose track of what you're there for. So here is the setup; It's a big warehouse that has rolling tubs/bins in the center, side, middle of the room... you rummage through the bins( don't turtle snail it because others will grab what you might want too right out of your hand). The bins get rolled away and new ones come in( don't touch the bins when the employees are rolling them away). Get what you need/ like/ want quick and don't piss off the regulars that go there to hunt for brand names and re sell... don't take anything out of carts you see standing around... and have fun!! The more times you go the easier and less intimidating it will be. Stuff is weighed at checkout and you're out. THIS WILL BE YOUR NEW ADDICTION... But don't worry... it will become old after a while. read more

I stay away on weekends, very crowded with some extremely aggressive and downright nasty customers. Also some moms and dads who bring their young kids and release them for free run of the store. Quiet often you can get high just breathing the air in the parking lot. All that being said, it's a lot of fun searching the bins for treasures, and I can't say enough about the polite and courteous staff. In other words the only really problem is that maybe 20% of the customer base that are scary, potentially violent, druggies. I fully expect a shooting to happen one day. read more

Love the excitement of finding great stuff! But I think they should only allow x amount of people at a time! And it's shocking how IGNORANT and aggressive the "regulars" are! I've gone about 4 or 5 this now over the corse of several months and see alot of the same group of people everything! They act like they own the damn place! You could be looking at a pile stuff and they have no problem grabbing everything in front of you and taking what they want ! Wish the employees would step in and makenthe customes leave! I stopped in yesterday thinking I would love it because their by the pound location in pa is awesome and I was horrified by the stuff I saw. All outdated oversized clothing and random bric a brac and people had while carts of it; literally piling their carts with average, boring colorless fabrics. If you have been to Goodwill thrift stores...well, this is a completely different experience. It's at their warehouse, so I gather that the stuff in the Buy the Pound store is the stuff they've sorted out of salable merchandise in the warehouse, but somebody might buy it so they'll give it a chance to sell anyway. Some of the items in the bins are, truthfully, trash. There are several large blue bins in the store -- clothes, books, and....miscellaneous, that's about as good as I'm going to get at describing this. They rotate the bins about every 45 minutes or so, and while we were not present for a rotation, I'm told it's something of a sight when they do. The store is a little bit difficult to find. Yea, if you have the time to wait around you can find some amazing deals here. They have everything from housewares to beauty products to books and magazines that you wouldn't be able to find anywhere else. They constantly bring out new things, so if you wade through all the trash you can find some amazing treasures. I found some old dolls, and a magazine about how folding the world's most amazing paper airplanes. Pretty cool, as I've always wanted to learn to fold paper airplanes like a professional. However, a lot of the stuff is kind of dirty and you have to spend a lot of time looking around just to find a few gems. Also, some of the cashiers were a little bit rude. This is definitely not like shopping at some upscale boutique... but it will be a cool story for for the grandkids! read more

If you enjoy garage sales and are a "thrifter," you may enjoy this place. It is definitely a "go to" location in Winter months when garage sales are scarce or nonexistent. That being said, this is not for everyone - especially the faint of heart. Some reviews mention that the employees are rude. That has not been my experience. However, the same does not apply to some of the customers. Most are pleasant, but there are notable exceptions. Some "newbees" who do not know the ropes, need to be coached, and the employees can get frustrated with them. Be prepared to experience running & pushing and some customers using their carts to block others from looking at goods the staff is bringing out. There is one senile old coot, a "regular," who should be avoided by all means, as he seems to enjoy bullying and insulting elderly women. (The pot calling the kettle black) Fortunately, this rude, miserable, individual is not the norm. You CAN meet some nice folks there. Otherwise, it can be a great adventure and who knows, after some serious rummaging, you may come away with a true bargain. read more

My experience with the Goodwill Buy the Pound store is truly amazing. I have bought several electronics there such as consoles, phones, tablets, and much more. Over 75% of my clothes in my dresser are from there. Even though I don't always get things in the blue bins the computer shelf or display case always have items that catch my eye. It's definitely an experience of a lifetime especially if you aren't used to thrift storesOverall the prices there are very good and I will recommend this store to anyone. read more

I went there for the first time a week ago with my mother, We had a great time shopping the idea is amazing. yet the way we were treated by the employees, as well as that customers that are there daily, doing this is there job, shopping and reselling. the customers that are there daily shopping an reselling really run the store more than the employees. the idea is wonderful but the staff need to get a grip on the store and be able to run the store. thank you, cindy read more

This is a thrifter's paradise! I've gotten so many useful items there, from shoes, boots, & baby clothes to a tag-along bike trailer. Everything is reasonably priced & for heavier items, the staff ask me if I'm able to pay a certain price. It's always been reasonable, but it's nice to know they are willing to negotiate if needed. And I'm puzzled by the criticism of the staff. I have always been treated with the utmost respect at Goodwill, and I rave about the excellent customer service to everyone. Primarily, I suppose, it's so good there because there is intentional job training from Goodwill. The mission of Goodwill, job training, is something I see as critical life skills, so I happily go there & give my money to them. It's the best price for me & my money is used to improve the community. A win-win all the way around! read more

This is my go to place to buy anything. Anything from stained underwear to Xbox's you can find at the Goodwill Buy the Pound store. In the 5 years we have been going here we have found: 4 Xbox 360s, an HTC phone, an iPhone 5c, a PlayStation 3, 3 desktop computers, a laptop, 3 PlayStation 2s, 3 tablets, and a hover board. good will goods, by the pound! if you're willing to spend some time here, there's really good stuff to be had on the *super* cheap. basically, everything is in these shallow bins that are raised up off the floor. and you root around in the bins to see what treasures you can find! the goods are roughly categorized (most shoes in one place, etc). the website shows the pricing breakdown... clothes are around $1.50/lb, some stuff is individually priced (cooking pans, 25 cents!). as the bins get emptied out, employees will come along, tell everyone to move back, remove some bins, replace them, and then everyone really goes to it! good fun. and a good deal. just plan to spend some time searching for what's good, rather than looking for a specific item. it's not that kinda good will. sometimes there's certain stuff, like furniture (recently, each piece was a Dollar. that's right, $1), then sometimes there's not. fyi, they actually *weigh* your entire cart, then deduct the weight of the cart. i was impressed, i hope you will be, too. read more

This place is not a regular Goodwill outlet. It's a warehouse with bins and everything is priced by the pound, obviously. And if you are claustrophobic then don't come here. The place is perpetually filled with people. And they don't seem to care where others are---they just shove and grab over each other. Not to mention the smell. PEW! I have been to Buy the Pound Warehouses in North Carolina and in Connecticut so I knew what to expect in Gorham. I did not even know this place was here (one hour north of me) till recently when I saw it on TV during a news broadcast. My daughter had never been to one so it was an experience for her but she loved it! First of all gloves are important to wear. Not everything is clean and there can be broken glass or ink cartridges broke open. There is a lot of competition for items in the bins when they come out! Many people go there every day and they are the regulars who mostly do resale usually on eBay! So they are looking for their livelihood . Most regulars are nice and will share hints about what to do but some can be rude. One lady tried to discourage my daughter from ever coming back (she did not succeed!) Another disgusting man bragged how he "let out gas around the table he wanted to look through and it made the people scatter!" How gross can you get! But for the most part it is a fun place to go if you don't mind "dumpster" diving because that is kind of what you do. The stuff in the bins are things Goodwill has that have not sold in their stores or they don't want to sell in their stores. Every 45 minutes or so, half the bins are replaced with new bins. The customers stand back behind a red line and wait for the new bins to be replaced then once they are all set there is a mad rush to get the stuff but the store is big enough so you will get a place to search through. And everyone is not looking for everything that you are looking for anyway so even if it is picked you can still find good things. I went to a table that had household stuff and there wasn't much left but there was a tied up shopping bag. No one had bothered to look in it. I hesitated untying it because "you never know" what might be there but I took a chance. Inside were 2 brand new $34 each playtex bras and the receipt for the store was still in the bag. Buy the pound is anywhere from $1.49 a lb to 79 cents a pound depending on how much you buy so I threw them in my cart. They probably cost me about 30 cents! I looked them up on eBay when I got home and they go off brand new for about $20 each! Nice little profit there!! I also got a like new L L Bean woman's wool coat for about $2.50. (Goes off on eBay for about $30 to $50). I paid $28 everything I got and ended up with 3 huge bags of clothes, some tupperware, and toys and books for my granddaughter. I will easily make back on eBay what I spent plus probably double that amount on the 4 items I am listing. I also got many things for myself and my husband. I wash everything as soon as I get home. I don't want to take any chances that any critters are in those clothes!! Overall, if you like the thrill of the hunt and don't mind getting dirty and maybe pushed out of the way once in awhile and have the temperament for such a thing, definitely find a "buy the pound" Goodwill near you. Gorham Maine "Buy the pound" facility: This place It has to be the most HAZARDOUS place I have ever shopped at and although when it first started up it was productive to go here to find a good bargain, however those days have long past and what seems to be going on now is they are turning this warehouse by the pound facility into a store like atmosphere where items are marked just as they would be in an outlet store. There policy changes daily to suit Goodwill needs as they have prices posted on their web site which are years old, last November they revised their pricing across the board to make it easier for people to shop however when i was there this morning 5/06/2014 their policy changed at the check out on an item that should of cost me .99 because it is stated in their new pricing guide lines anything corded and NOT marked was .99, however this only seems to apply to some shoppers at Goodwill. In other words as quoted by the manager at the time, the policy written does NOT apply and prices can and will change once your at the check out. Over the years I have found Medical Needles/Razor Blades/ Medication/Peoples personal check books/Social security cards/Asbestos products/Drivers licenses/Computer hard drives including some marked Police evidence/Live ammunition/CO2 cartridges/marijuana/crack pipes/Birth certificates....among other items of a personal nature and I have stepped up and removed these items in the past and given them to a Goodwill employee. It is not my intent to write this to disgrace Goodwill in any way because they do a lot of good things in a community as far as helping some people however these things happen every single day at shop by the pound because management has budgeted a certain portion of their funds to recycling into the buy by the pound facility and employees are pressured into getting things moving at a fast pace so not everything is gone thru before being set out for the public. On that note I am told that all items placed out for purchase at the Buy by the pound facility is indeed sent in from the local stores so I'm guessing this stuff is donated to a store and stores are not excepting your donations, but rather are sending them off to the Goodwill recycling facility to be offered to Buy the pound customers before being sorted and recycled. So if you plan on visiting the Gorham facility located in the Gorham Industrial Park do yourself sum good and be prepared to wear safety gloves in case you come across a medical needle, wear a mask in case you come across something made of asbestos or even someones medication. I must disagree with a previous post that suggested the employees treated customers poorly. Every time I have visited, the employees are extremely polite and friendly. Even on the busiest, crazy days, the cashiers are patient and helpful with explaining the pricing. It's a little confusing, not knowing how much things are until you get to the checkout. But I'm ALWAYS pleased with the total. The employees also control the crowds by announcing firmly and loudly what the expectation is when bringing out new merchandise. I even heard them remind the customers "...and be nice to each other". Yes, there are regulars who haunt the place, but that is to be expected at such a venue. Most people are respectful of your space, even in the fresh merch frenzy. If you don't like digging through bins and you don't like treasure hunters, you may not like this particular shopping format. If you love a good deal and need cheap furniture, you might want to give this place a try. read more

Love this place, there is a few hiccups in the place . People fill the carts and put them a side and then fill another cart and that is why the store runs out of carts for other customers ,so if you fill a cart pay for it and go put it in your car and come back in and shop for more don't tie up the carts, and some people push and shove cause they want to be the first to have hands on every thing and they have No Patience and when carts are being rotated it is worse people will run you over no respect , and I see that the prices went up also, Why?. 99 cents was great on the clothes by the pound and the other prices went down on all other stuff that kind of sucks . when you think about it , it don't make any since put it back to .99 cents pound and put the other stuff .50 cents pound or happy medium some were, cause some people travel a distance to come to Gorham to shop buy the pound so by keeping the prices down it is making it worth there wild to travel down there I know it does me I tell everyone and I see a lot more people there now.
