The drop off area deserves 5 stars as they are very good. However, the store personnel are about the worst I have ever encountered. My 4 year old daughter found a toy horse that she wanted. The price tag was partially ripped off - therefore, they refused to sell it to me. We were buying 4 DVD's and it wasn't like I was asking for it for free, but although my daughter was crying for it, the lifeless clerk (and then the store manager) insisted that their policy is that they can not sell something without a price tag. I asked if they could take it to the back and tag it and they said NO. The staff looks like they are from a scene from the walking dead - they are totally lifeless and uncaring. I will donate there again, but we will never shop there again. Horrible store with horrible staff. Not one employee there ever cracked a smile. BTW - Why does Brendan H. only respond to positive reviews about Goodwill? He should try spending some time addressing the bad ones. read more

Is always very easy to donate items here. As with most Goodwells the crowd can be a little sketchy but that is to be expected. All donating I looked around and didn't see anything I would want to buy for myself, although another good wills I have found a few goodbyes with her that's a golf club or speaker set. read more

Wow. Took a car load of donations here today and thought I was going to get knifed by the guy taking donations! Complained to the overall manager; he brought out the donations manager as well. As soon as the donations manager saw me, he said "I know what the problem is." And said that, over and over again, made no eye contact with me, etc. When I pulled up to make the donation, the donation guy was literally cursing (f**** idiot is how he described another customer trying to back her car up). Then he turned to me with what I can only describe as a look of disgust. Ok, not a great start but hey, I just want to quickly unload my stuff. We don't need to make small talk. I proceeded to unload my first item, a bumbo seat. Second item was a bunch of kitchen items in a large Rubbermaid tub. I asked the guy if I could unload the items into another box or put them somewhere directly. "As you can see, there's nothing available", he practically snarled. Ok, at this point this guy is so hostile I'm ready to call it quits. It's one thing to be rude, another to open hate your customers and make them feel as uncomfortable as possible. No thanks. The kicker - I asked for my bumbo seat back. "Get it yourself." Excuse me? "I. SAID. GET. IT. YOUR. SELF." Back to the first part of this story - with the managers. The overall manager was quite apologetic, but the other one was again completely dismissive. I finally got so fed up with one manager apologizing while the other was pretty much accusing me of being a racist - the whole "I know what the problem is" was pretty transparent - that I walked out. Disgusting customer service and really upsetting to be treated that way by the manager. I work in social service programs and so recognize the mission of Goodwill. Which makes it even worse to be treated like I'm some white privilege princess (who btw did all of the unloading like I usually do, no problem and no expectation - just asked if there was a box, that's all). GoodWill has questionable/unethical wage practices for regular workers which is why I will never donate to them. CEO earns more than a $1million plus, no doubt, hidden $$$ perks and benefits this includes other execs too. Why is it okay to pay a worker $8.25 per hour and the CEO $1million per year? It's immoral, un-Christian, and against Christ's teachings for a Methodist founded org! I don't give my stuff away FREE to non-egalitarian businesses that fail to practice what they preach. I used to come quite regularly but in light of wage practices I feel that I cross my ethical standing every time I enter the store. I don't look at garments. The shelves are always pretty empty and items have retail prices. Don't know if there are a lot of customers that clean up buying items but I never find anything. But I'm ever amused by finding IKEA items for more than they cost at IKEA. read more

I read the reviews and I first want to say that I have never shopped here. However, I donate regularly and am always incredibly impressed how quickly I can get in and out. I have always donated clothing and household goods throughout the year and have dropped off at a number of donation sites in the area. This goodwill has someone out with a cart quickly and a receipt. With a full car, I can get in and out in 5 minutes. I appreciate having a center like this in the neighborhood. read more

This goodwill would be awesome and convenient, but they're prices are WAY too high for a goodwill. They had multiple cases for $20 each, and plate sets $1-2 for each plate which seems just like regular store prices, not what a goodwill should be charging. I'm giving it a 2-star rating because it serves a purpose. That purpose is not for treasure seeking suburbanites who enjoy 'thrifting'. It is a store full of low cost clothing, a little furniture and some old looking dishes. No one is friendly and customers appear to be down-on-their-luck or recent immigrants. read more

good for clothes, everything else is far overpriced. I've been coming here for years since they opened up. It's usually been one of the better spots in the area, but in the past 6 months or so, their prices have risen to a bit of a ridiculous average. The Clothes selection is great and has reasonable prices, but electronics, shoes, and home decorations are WAY to pricey. I think they must have hired some new pricers who don't know what they're doing. Sometimes they put an expensive item on the floor with a paper that has how much the items sells for "new" and how much they are asking, but even then it's not enough off; maybe %30. For instance, today they were pricing old 20" tv's for $80, old beaten up stereo speakers for $35 and a broken wooden step latter for $60! that's outrageous. that thing should have been $15 at the most. This is not a "fancy" resale shop that specializes in brand names, it's a Goodwill! this stuff should be priced around 10 cents for every dollar an item was brand new, not %30 off original price. I even have seen some items go for more than I know I could get them on ebay or craigslist. Bottom Line: I've been shopping Thrifts for over 20 years now and this shop has been one of my go to's, but lately it's getting too expensive for a thrift. read more

Yesterday I was shopping in the goodwill retail store and the power went out (in the entire strip mall, not just the goodwill store). Many shoppers raised their cell phones to give a little light and the managers began YELLING for everyone to remain calm. (They were not remaining calm, at all) demanding that we leave our baskets and carts where they stood and for us to all go to the front of the store and then made us exit the building. I was holding the door open to help customers holding children's hands and carrying children, but then the manager Caroline literally yanked the door out of my hand and RUDELY said the door had to be closed NOW. A friendly employee is saying that he's sure they will re-open and we will be able to complete our transactions but after 15 minutes, employees were being dismissed for the night. Management did not even give us the courtesy of telling us they weren't going to be able to reopen, they just closed and relocked the door behind the employees. As the hopeful customers began to dwindle and give up on the purchases we had hoped to make, the few of us left began to talk about our past experiences with this goodwill location. Every single one of us had had some bad customer service experiences with the manager on duty, Caroline, and we were really disappointed with the way things had been handled tonight. It's very sad that so many of us had nothing nice to say about Caroline as a manager and employee of Goodwill, yet, she still has a job. I hope someone reads this and evaluates her skills at this store, she really should be relocated to the back where processing is done so she stops making "goodwill" look "bad". Or put her in some Bill Collecting department where rude attitudes are part of the business. read more

I've shopped here for about a year, but now I think it's time to stop. This store is getting way overpriced and are starting to flat out lie on the value of their goods. Normally, when this store has an item they think is expensive, they will print out an ebay page of the item with a 'buy it now' price and base their price off of that. The problem with this is that the 'buy it now' price is not the selling price. It's the price people ask for the item which will most likely never sell. They've been doing this for a while and I've mostly ignored these overpriced items. But now they are straight up lying about their products. They recently got in a couple of guitars, and naturally they did their ebay pricing thing. The problem is that the ads they printed out are not even the same item they are selling! They have a beat up and very cheap classical guitar with no brand markings on it for a price tag of $399.99. Along with it is a printout of a webpage showing a guitar with an appraised value of ~$1400. Looking at the photos on the printout it's pretty obvious that it's not the same guitar. They're trying to pawn off a cheap toy as something that's valuable, and that is disgusting. Same thing with a black electric guitar they got in. Price tag is $399 and they have an ebay printout of a completely different model with a 'buy it now' price of ~$1300. Like I said normally I just ignore these products, but now they are straight up deceiving people! Don't make people believe that a basic ~$200 guitar is worth ~$1300 by printing out an ebay page for an ASKING PRICE (which is not even the SELLING PRICE) on a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT model! I feel bad for whoever buys those thinking they are a good deal when in reality they got ripped off. Oh, and don't believe the store owner who writes on these reviews stating that the store will do something about over priced items. The Herndon Goodwill is not my favorite. They have a good selection of books, CD's and DVDs. However, this location is very messy and it's overpriced. I have purchased a couple great finds. One being a like new condition Jim Shore Santa regularly priced $19 and on sale that day for $14. I've also purchased a Longaberger basket in like new condition. I was in the store this past Thursday and the stereo was too loud and it was competing with the TV's and the children in the play area. Don't go here if you want a quiet shopping experience. One customer went over and turned down the stereo but then, I believe it was an associate, came back 5 minutes later and turned it back up. read more

I'm new to the area, and have been looking for a new thrift store to frequent and thought this goodwill by my apartment would be a good start. I've shopped around this store at least 4 times over the past two months, and each time I leave empty handed and disappointed in the over-priced clutter of this store. I love shopping at thrift stores that put my money to good use, but I'm also looking for a bargain. This is my favorite thrift store location due to the variety and quantity of clothing and shoes as well as home goods and furniture. They have a LOT of kitchen items-huge selection and I can almost always find a specific item that I need. The staff is the best-friendly and helpful. They regularly have designer clothing in great shape and designer handbags (I have found multiple Kate Spade bags, multiple Coach bags and routinely find Wilson's Leather handbags and briefcases, Etienne Aigner bags). Their selection of dishware and silverware includes everyday brands up to numbered and rare pieces - do not forget to look! Did I mention furniture? Good quality furniture can be regularly found at Goodwill Herndon. Huge electronics section - kitchen appliances to TV's, stereo equipment - You name it, they have it. They also ALWAYS have sales! Be sure to check the chalk board in the front of the store. The staff are knowledgeable AND friendly, really relaxed and helpful people. This Goodwill store is easy to donate to and easy to buy from. Do any of these characteristics I've mentioned change from time to time? I've been coming to this store regularly for over three years and the selection, quality, price and helpful staff are very consistent. Do I go to other thrift stores? All the time. I agree with the others. This use to be a very nice place to find quality bargains but now everything is seriously over priced. This is suppose to be Goodwill, not Neiman Marcus. Worn shores for $20 or even $30 dollars simply because it is a name brand. Anyone who has $30 to pay for shoes can go to the mall or a department store a get a new pair. Why would anyone pair $30 for a used pair? I was in there the other night and had a horrible experience. I left thinking maybe I was the one with the wrong attitude but after reading all of these recent reviews stating the same thing, I know that I was correct and that this location needs a major management overhall. What justifies charging 150.00 for a CASSETTE PLAYER yes CASSETTE PLAYER calling it a vintage antique by the clueless store associate? Granted it was 54.00 on ebay with 0 bids, but your starting price was 3xs higher with no buyers, and at half off 75.00???? SMH Lucky I only buy books, but you won the cream of the crop of price gouging, I DONT CARE THAT YOU TRAIN people, nothing justifies the ridiculous and I mean ridiculous pricing strategy that DONATED goods being charged. I have called this location and this manager out because he has said in numerous reviews we will review our pricing, nothing has been done, this is still the most expensive goodwill in the country and I go goodwill touring from florida, to the midwest, to the eastern seaboard, shame on this location, for its price gouging. RUDE. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE thrift stores, and love Goodwill in particular because I'm all about the work they do. But this place rubbed me the wrong way in EVERY way. Dropping off a donation? Unless it's a designer product, brand new and unused, they make you feel like dirt for bringing it to them. And even if it IS a designer product, brand new and unused, they act like you've bothered them by donating it. The shopping experience is similarly infuriating. If you're looking for household items and furniture, or looking to drop off items, try the Habitat for Humanity thrift store down the street, or for clothes try the Clock Tower thrift shops. If you're looking to have someone rip your self-worth to shreds, I recommend this Goodwill. read more

Loaded up a trailer with furniture to donate. We have a turtle and a bird as pets, goodwill would not take a pair of chairs because they had hair on them. They told us we had a dog or a cat. I wish we could find a way to give the furniture to some who could use it. Headed to the dump read more

As advised, I contacted the store general manager who was very polite and sympathetic and made arrangements to resolve the previous issue. I appreciate the gesture very much. I had assumed there was nothing that could be done but am glad to have been wrong. This has helped restore the confidence I'd lost after the previous disappointment. A year ago, this was the best Goodwill in the Greater DC area. Now, it must be one of the worst. Prices on clothing and glass/dinnerware haven't changed, but everything else is drastically overpriced. The point of shopping at Goodwill is to get a great price on used goods. There are no great prices here anymore. There aren't even good prices. I'm amazed that people still shop at this place...they must only be buying clothes. Not sure what happened, but if this place went under new management between 07/2014 and 07/2015, you've really screwed your store. Absolutely awful. read more

I shop at a variety of Goodwill stores and have found this one to be one of the most expensive ones in the Northern Virginia area. I think charging $3.99 for a Pfaltzgraff dinner plate that shows significant signs of wear is outrageous when other stores are selling their plates for $.99 or $1.99. Every once in a while I will find something reasonably priced which is why I return to this store. A beef that I have with Goodwill in general is that they require their employees to ask every customer to "round up". They are required to meet quotas. A better solution would be for the owner to use his or her profits to support employee training instead of asking the customers to do so since all of the merchandise has been donated to begin with. read more

This place needs a bigger location. Today was a nightmare. 50% off and I was appalled. Absolutely no carts, people were pushing into me and grabbing things out of my hands, a child was lost and the parent didn't respond to three overhead calls, it is so small and cramped. It had just opened. Line was super long. The workers were doing great but shoppers were crazy. You can't even move. Get more shopping carts. Also some stuff is so overpriced it's ridiculous.
