This is the absolute best park!…read more It's like a treasure chest of a park for kids but also so scenic that adults will love it also. Lots of spots to explore in a perfect setting. There are books and crannies kids will love and also a large grassy area for relaxing or running around. I especially liked the amount of somewhat shady spots which is great for small children. Clean and has picnic benches and a pavilion as well. Perfect spot.

Also I like that there are only two entrances to get into the playground area, and they're both way from the street. This makes me feel like my kids are more guarded. My negative is there are some sketchy people that do come out to just hang around here, and lots of people smoking around the playground.

Sadly, our steadfast friends were out of town, but they benevolently let us stay at their place, so everything was comfy and familiar and homey, if a little lonely because of the absence of our gracious hosts. We needed additional stuff to do on the days between games, so I suggested following the St. Joseph River to find out where it starts. On the way (back, I believe), we discovered tiny Bristol, Indiana, and its even tinier Subway, whose bathroom was extremely useful. Near that Subway is Congdon Park, a lovely waterside park right at the confluence of the St. Joseph and Little Elkhart Rivers. The park is cute and quaint and spectacular in its unexpectedness. The location is perfect, but it's not just some random piece of greenery. There's a gazebo and picnic tables and play equipment and some kind of weird deck/pier (for fishing?) and a bench swing. That's right, a bench swing. The grass is pretty well maintained, and there's a nice paved path all around the little park so that you can take a walk without getting mud on your shoes. This would be a five-star deal all the way around except that as we walked south along the shoreline from the bench swing, we were almost instantly swarmed by vicious but ultimately harmless insects--harmless, that is, unless you wanted to avoid breathing them in, because the swarms were huge and relentless. As we ran south, they dissipated a bit, but once we reached the deck/pier, they were back, and this time, they were unbearable. Bugs don't normally frazzle me, but these did. Maybe they only appear at a certain time each year, like the midges that invade Cleveland for a couple of weeks each spring, but it wasn't quite spring yet, so I doubt it. The bugs ruined what had been a perfectly charming park visit, but that's just because we happened to walk east from the parking lot and then head south. If we had gone counterclockwise, things would have been fine. You should visit this park, and you should also try to find the source of the St. Joseph River. Take a picture of you and your sweetie sitting in the bench swing and post it. You know you want to.

This is a nice park. The playground is big, and there are a number of fun things to play on/with,…read moreincluding slides (multiple), bridges, a rock wall, tunnels and more. It's all very colorful and fun. There's also a splash pad with multiple water features, and it's located in a nice shady spot with benches all around. Shade! Around a splash pad! This seems to be a rare thing nowadays, but yes, there is shade here. As a parent, that's probably what I like this park: There is always somewhere shady to sit or stand. This park also had a gigantic roofed overhand area with benches for big parties. When we visited, there was a church party going on. There is also a little rain garden on the outer edge of the park, which was a welcome sight. I love when parks make the effort to incorporate native plants into their park spaces. It doesn't go unnoticed, and it's greatly appreciated! Potawatomi Park is directly outside of Potawatomi Zoo. The two share a parking lot, so it might be a drag to find parking on busy days.

And parking is all around. The playground has a number of small pieces of equipment, but the showpiece is called Manitou Mountain. A large wooden series of towers and slides are enclosed in this fenced area. Swings and other pieces of wooden equipment are mixed in among the towers. In addition to the playground, there are basketball courts, a baseball field to the north and a football field to the south. The park was clean and in good condition. This is the park to choose if you are visiting Rochester. Review #3076

When I heard this was open to the public instead of being farther back on the base, I made a point to stop by. It is right at the entrance, outside the security gates. There's a nice large parking lot, and the park has clearly been redone recently. The parking lot's new, there are walking paths, the planes are in excellent shape and nicely displayed. Plus, there's a very nice shelter house, and a midsize playground. Well worth a visit just as a park if you live in the area. Anyone who likes aviation and is anywhere nearby, within an hour or two anyway, should come check it out. I was very impressed and will come back someday even though I do not live nearby.

Leeper Park always reminds me of Will. And kind of of Sheila, but mainly of Will. Will was sick…read more Esther and I visited him. Often. We got stuff from his apartment when he was in the hospital. This was long before Will moved to Philadelphia. This was long before Erin O. met Will. This was long before Erin O. told me about meeting Will, which wasn't long after Erin O. told me about meeting Aaron. I think Erin O. thought I was trying to set her up with Aaron, but I wasn't. Or maybe Aaron thought so. Aaron is Canadian and that's awesome. I was sort of trying to set Erin O. up with Will, but it didn't take, and that's fine. All of this was long before Erin O. married Jose. The park is spectacular. You can drive through it. You can feed ducks. It goes on and on, kind of like a September to remember, though not quite like a December to remember. Visit this park. Please. I will next time I visit South Bend with Esther, which could be in September. Or October. Hopefully, it will either be unseasonably warm or unseasonably cold. South Bend is best when the weather's not like it's supposed to be, either way. And when I lived in South Bend, I used to wonder whether Leeper park would have leepers if it had sand. You know, leepers, like in the Legend of Zelda? But those are leevers, and I made a mental fool of myself in my own mind for years.

There…read moreis a tennis complex on one side, where they offer an excellent and affordable childrens tennis program, as well as tennis for adults. It was recently remodeled and is in great shape. Near the tennis complex is a playground, a duck pond and some picnic tables. Across 31 there is park with a raceway island and a small beach. Its a nice place to take a walk and popular for salmon and steelhead fishing in the fall. Theres a garden and a log cabin replica on the east side of the park as well. The river in this location is fairly shallow wth rapids, my kids like to wade in the shallows when the water is low.
