The *other* storefront - seriously!
Karl K.

Two restaurant storefronts?!?! --------- After doing a city tour of Bern (including the bear pit / rose garden), we decided to come here at the suggestion of our "tour guide" Rick Steves. We found the storefront as listed, and entered. Rather small and cozy (I think about 10 tables or so, rectangularly laid out room), somewhat romantic lit with mostly with candles. Slightly unbearable warmth of the room. We ordered the fondue for two. Comes with bread cubes, and at our request, a small side of fingerling potatoes. The fondue itself was rather tasty, except the ?wine they used made the cheese taste slightly bitter (perhaps not suited to an American palate?). Anyway, everything was going as expected, until we asked where the restroom was. We walk to the "back" of the restaurant, and what do you know? We seemingly pop into another restaurant, with a different interior design - and a fresher, hipper vibe! Turns out, it is the same restaurant - who knew! Bill came out to 61.90 (they charged 1 CHF per person for tap water - again, a custom we are not used to). But definitely worth experiencing at least once if you are ever in the area. Just remember to sit on the hip side!

Best meal we had in Bern. Wonderful ambiance. Prices reasonable for the portions. Super convenient for our party to get reservations online.

The menu here is weird, a mishmash of different cuisines, but the reviews were positive so we just…read moregave it a try. Food was very good, we ordered an appetizer but got it prepared differently (shrimp cocktail came out cooked in some shallot juice, but it was really good so no complaints). As I said, the menu is weird so I ordered fish and chips, fish was really good, light batter and cooked well. Fries were solid and the tartar sauce was different than I expected was actually great. Better than most tartar sauces I get usually when I order fish and chips My wife ordered the Spanakopita, she said all the ingredients were fresh though the dough was more like a calzone than a filo dough, but it tasted good Switzerland isn't cheap, so the cost was a bit more than the US (I live in NYC) but with the service fee included it really was close to a wash as to what we would have spent on NYC when you include tip. Service was good, besides getting a different shrimp dish. If I am ever in Bern again, I would go here again. I can see why it's been open since 1973
