Its draw instead is in the historical significance of the area it crosses. Having spent much time staying in the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens, I became fascinated with the early history of the area. Although the area has become massively gentrified in recent years, the longtime residents of LIC who haven't been priced out are proud of their area's history. Much historical information is available, including early use of the creek by the Dutch settlers. The creek & its tributaries weren't always polluted waterways. The Indigenous Peoples that first lived on the land found it a vibrant source of food and transportation before Dutch explorers claimed the land in the early 1600's. Dutch settlers also looked to it for travel, food & water. The tributary now known as Dutch Kills has significance for me because of my love of history. While spending time in the area now known to many as Dutch Kills, I purchased a Dutch Kills shirt. A bodega across from where I stayed posted pages of history near its cash register. A close pub was named for it. Dutch Kills was well known then & historically cherished. The area has changed a lot in recent years with expansion of the gentrification beyond the LIC waterfront. I hope its history isn't lost to time & "progress". The bridge & its surrounding area have a Revolutionary War history. The bridge itself is named for Polish Revolutionary War Commander Pulaski, since early settlers of the adjoining Greenpoint neighborhood in Brooklyn were Polish. The British tributary is called British Kills. The area was the a headquarters for the British troops. The troops were housed in the Dutch Kills section of LIC I know so well. So when you cross the Pulaski Bridge that you've traveled so routinely in the past, don't think of it as a small ordinary bridge. Think instead of the history of the area it crosses. Step back in time with me.

I use it on a very regular basis, and I remember the nice views but obstructed by fencing that's on both sides of the road. It doesn't feel like very much like going between boroughs, and the transition is not that big of a deal on this road. It's good and not that many people use it really.

They are on both sides as well which is nice. When your crossing from Queens to Brooklyn, it narrows down to one lane as your crossing over the middle. Coming back the other way there are two lanes. The bridge is over Newton Creek I think is the name of that river. I've never seen it used but it is a drawbridge. You can see the mechanical arms that stop traffic on sides as your driving over.

One can only imagine what it looked like from this location. The firefighters from Rockaway must have seen what looked like Armageddon in the distance, yet they went toward it. There's a sign at the entrance to the park looking for volunteers. The memorial Park definitely needs some landscaping work.

She was well-informed, conversational, and taught me a lot about something that I knew very little about on my arrival. I am a more informed New Yorker because of it. Bowne's house and family history are interesting, complicated, and hopeful - with lessons still (unfortunately) applicable today. Highly recommended.

Who came to Flushing in 1661 searching for a place to worship without fear or intimidation. Hi everyone and welcome to historical Flushing New York. Flushing is a very old town indeed. Everywhere you look are towering Oak and pine trees hundreds of years old. Some of the buildings also stretch back into inntiquity. Straight back to our Native American caretakers. My grandmother would tell me the way Flushing was at one time, a different community. With a totally different vibe but still a vibrant diverse community. Flushing during grandmother's time , was complete with Dance halls, restaurants & department stores. But one thing remains constant in Flushing, religious freedom. Flushing was founded by those who were religiously persecuted. Our American ancestors were brave souls who traveled 1000 miles on Wooden Ships put together with hope, spit and tar. This harrowing Journey would take place on vessels without modern conveniences, navigation or guarantee of safe arrival. These huddled masses of religious pioneers came to our country to find a place where they could find their path to "The House of God". To search for a place to live and worship, a land without bigotry, repression, or fear. This was the path that John Bowne traveled. His family came to live in this small wooden house just steps from my own. I would pass this common little structure during is renovations. And learned of its former inhabitants. A tangible station of the Underground Railroad. The John Bowne house is surrounded by beautiful fruit bearing trees and birds that sing as if John and his family still lived here. 9 generations of John Bowne's Family Lived and spread the word of God and religious freedom from under this roof. In 1945 the structure and property were donated to "The Bowne Historical Society." In 1657 The Flushing Remonstrance petitioned Flushing's ruling Dutch government to permit religious freedoms and allow the practice of the Quaker worship. The Flushing Remonstrance petition is believed to be the Cornerstone of our American religious freedoms guaranteed in our Bill of Rights. Wow, who knew? People are allowed to worship in here in the United States in the manner we choose because of the vision and dreams and prayers. That traveled into the heavens from this small humble plot. Everybody loves this amazing Bridge which takes you from Queens in to Brooklyn, way out in the Rockaways, and it's absolutely beautiful. There are many nice beaches around here, and even though it used to be a dirt cheap bridge at $1 not that long ago, it's $5 and it's still one of the cheaper bridges in the area. But the price increase did suck. It means that I use it less than I used to but I still like it. I took a star off because of an unfortunate price increase.
