The Gothic Revival building, designed by Reuben Harrison Hunt, was built in 1890. It is the oldest building designed by Hunt that is still extant in Chattanooga.[2] It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.[1] Since 1984 the undercroft of the church's main building has been used for a homeless shelter, operated as a cooperative project of Second Presbyterian Church and St. Paul's Episcopal Church. St. Matthew's Men's Night Shelter started as a winter-only emergency shelter for homeless men. It now operates year-round to provide overnight housing for men who are participating in a rehabilitative program, such as the program of the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.

The worship was so God honoring a beautiful and the message was good. The only thing that was missing to us, was it was not very welcoming. Although people appeared to be connecting to one another which was beautiful to see. There was nothing addressing newcomers, someone walking in new, no greeters, no way of knowing what was next if you wanted this to become your church home. The space is limited so no place really to connect (like lobby, this one is VERY small) Definitely needs some sort of way for new combers to feel welcomed even if it was mentioned from the pupit, like if this is your first time, we would like to welcome you and so in so is available for questions after the service, or please fill out this welcome card and one of our staff will contact you. So very loud it gave me a headache and really hurt my husbands ears (he has tinnitus) to the point that he had to cover his ears with his hands the whole time. Jason Crabb sang and the words were beautiful, but again so horribly loud it was painful. We were hoping to at least enjoy the pastors message but he was so loud it was unbearable and we had to leave. We were told to use earplugs when we were leaving but I have birth defects in my ears and can't and WHY does the service have to be so loud that earplugs are offered or necessary!!!!

I grew up in the SDA church but my husband is not SDA and he mentioned a few things he enjoyed that were not typical of the SDA churches we've been to--The table seating (no rows) and come-as-you-feel attire was a pleasant surprise. He was nervous wearing jeans because he feared it wasn't "sda church appropriate" but he relaxed when he saw the pastor wearing jeans, too! He also pointed out the way the offering and tithe was collected was different-no "God needs our money" spiel. When we come back to the Chattanooga area, we'll definitely attend again.

I have tutored with an after school program that the church runs so I was slightly familiar with the church. This morning I attended the Contemporary service at 10:45 am. The service was PACKED. Extra chairs were brought out to accommodate late arrivers. The folks I sat next to were friendly, though it seems like a church for the older crowd (most of the heads I saw out in the congregation were grayed). There was also an infant baptism this morning. The worship was very professional, but I was unfamiliar with most of the songs. The preacher's message was about the new year and re-dedication. While based in scripture (a plus) it was also applicable to real life (another plus). The church's bulletin was also filled with plenty of Sunday School classes, activities, mission and outreach events--a variety of ways to get connected with a body of believers. I will most likely attend again so I can get a second impression.

Sometimes, I admit, I've thought of any Episcopalian church as *Catholic light* and been put off; we Protestants of the Meth/Pres bent tend to shy away from such. But, I like this church. Not just because it is convenient to me (there are at least four others I can walk to as well, so let's cross that criteria off the most-important list) but because I like the people. I also like that there are multiple service times, which is one thing I was used to/assumed would be available in Atlanta (from restaurants to gyms to religious services to...) and it has an active life in the community, to boot. I tried to go inside but I couldn't find an unlocked door, which I thought was strange. I thought Churches were never locked? what's up with that? old wives tale? who knows, but this church was locked. History of the church St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is a downtown congregation of the Episcopal Church. It is one of the largest congregations in the Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee. The congregation first assembled in 1852, when local Episcopalians held worship services on the second floor of a general merchandise store at 4th and Market Streets. The parish was organized the following year in a meeting of ten families. The parish's first church building was at the corner of 8th and Chestnut. During the American Civil War, it was used as a military hospital and received serious damage. The building was repaired and returned to use in 1867 after the congregation received $3640 from the federal government as compensation for the damages. In 1880, the parish sold the property at 8th and Chestnut and acquired the property at 7th and Pine as the site for a new church. The church's current building was built in 1881 or 1886 and opened for worship in 1888. It was designed by New York City architect William Halsey Wood. Its design, which features a prominent bell tower, was modeled after a "typical English village church".The sanctuary has a high wooden ceiling and side galleries; it can seat about 450 people.The bell tower holds 11 bells that were cast by the McShane factory in Baltimore and dedicated in 1911.
