Mark Dever unapologetically preaches from the Word of God in a region of the country that is desperate for truth. The music was phenomenal, highlighted by natural acoustics and the voices of many joyful Christians. If you are in the DC area and need a great Church that speaks truth directly from the Bible, I would give this place a visit!

However, the community was incredibly unkind. As first-time visitors, we were unsure where to go when we arrived, and no one offered assistance. Despite seeing us looking lost, ushers and other church workers neither greeted us nor helped us find our way. When we finally located the sanctuary and asked about the children's classes, the ushers continued to walk past without speaking, and some looked at us without offering a greeting or welcome. As I walked down the hall, a woman who seemed to be either a church worker or a regular member shoved past me, looked me up and down, and continued on to talk to someone else. During our almost three-hour visit, only three people spoke to us: two ladies who sat near us and one person we happened to know. We are African American, but there were many other African Americans and people of color in attendance, which made the unkindness we experienced even more confusing. This level of unkindness and disregard was something we had never encountered in a church before. It was deeply disappointing to witness such a beautiful and meaningful service, only to see the absence of Christ's love in how the members and workers treated visitors. Despite arriving early and seeing numerous people with "usher" badges, not a single one welcomed us. My hope is that this church, with its beautiful service, learns to demonstrate the love of God they preach about by showing kindness to visitors. Training ushers to greet and welcome newcomers could make a significant difference. We had heard so many wonderful things about this church and were excited to visit. We were hungry for good theological teaching, hymns, and solid Christian fellowship. Instead, we left feeling unwelcome in the community.

My 12 year old daughter and my husband both turned to me and asked if we could leave, so we did. I believe in a Jesus who calls for mutual submission and equality among sexes, so District Church is not for us.

They use to live in the ghettos of Boston where there were as many funerals there as there are wedding in DC. They opened their house to the neighborhood children who often didn't have enough to eat or needed a safe place. On a side note regarding the post on Chinese New years, all the Christians I know in China and Taiwan celebrate Chinese New Years because it's a time to connect with family and friends and to share and tell them how much you love them. It's not easy being Christian in China and some of them have given up professions, suffered persecution, and are barely scrapping by, but they celebrate Chinese New Years....maybe differently from others....like with prayer and church services along with visiting family, feeding and helping the poor and witnessing to them. Chinese Christians definitely celebrate and share Christ's love during the two week national celebration!

The Basilica is home to more than 80 chapels and oratories honoring the Mother of God, reflecting the ethnic heritage and diversity of the Catholic Church in the United States. The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C., is America's Catholic Church, a National Shrine dedicated to the Blessed Mother, patroness of our nation. It is a prayerful house of worship, pilgrimage, evangelization, and reconciliation. Mary's Shrine invites people from across the country and beyond to share in Christ's ever-living Presence through the companionship and love of His Mother. I recently attended a week-long conference on the campus of the Catholic University of America - and this magnificent grandeur of America's Largest Catholic Church & one of the 10 largest in the world - boasts itselt as "a monument of love and gratitude, a great hymn in stone. . .as perfect as the art of man can make it and holy as the intentions of its builders could wish it to be." (Bishop Thomas Shahan) Indeed, what a spectacular experience first-hand spiritual nourishment by attending masses in both the Upper Church and Crypt church (I had gone to the Sunday 4:30 p.m. & Friday Daily Mass at 12:10 p.m.), in addition to the highlight concert of the convention week that gave us a glimpse of the many expressions of music: from the 56 bells of the Knights Tower Carrillon, to the narly 10,000 pipes of the great organs - as well as the voices of the Choir of the Basilica joined by us attendees and the faithful of both locals & tourists in the DMV region! I was able to walk around the Basilica's perimeter, as well as adorn the grounds and peruse through the many side chapels depicting Mother Mary in all cultures and heritages that represent the great devotion to the Blessed Mother around the world! In addition, the Basilica is well-kept and well-preserved, as well as secured - thanks to the many docents and security personnel that keeps visitors safe! Did I mention free parking?! I definitely would want to keep coming back here as my travels allow me!
