When I first joined Gracie Aliso Viejo, I was looking for something physical. I'm not really into yoga or Pilates. I love weightlifting and hiking, but I wanted something that would not only challenge me physically, but also benefit me in my everyday life. I signed up for a free trial and after my very first class, I immediately understood why I needed this. As a mom, I often do things alone with my daughter. It hit me that if anyone ever tried to hurt me or take her, I wouldn't have the skill set or the size to confidently protect us. That realization is what pushed me to sign up right away. I'm not the best at it (yet!), but the instructors are incredibly patient and kind. From Victor to Ji (apologies if I misspelled that), they are excellent teachers. They break things down clearly, encourage you, and create such a supportive environment. I still catch myself saying "sorry" or freezing in certain situations, but every class reminds me why I'm here and why this training matters. It's challenging in the best way like solving physical puzzles. If you enjoy testing yourself and learning something completely new, this is perfect. Even if you've never thrown a punch in your life (like me!), it's fun, safe, and welcoming. Everyone is kind and nonjudgmental. The studio is extremely clean, family-friendly, and professionally run. Wonderful experience with Gracie Barra in Aliso Viejo! My 14-year-old son joined about two years ago after trying a few different jiu-jitsu schools, and this one immediately felt like the right fit for him. The school is very organized; the classes are structured by age and level. The kids stay fully involved during the whole class with lots of 1:1 practice and instructor attention, so they really get a lot out of the training. The coaches are kind, supportive, and great with kids. We absolutely love this jiu-jitsu school. Both of my kids attend and I can't say enough about Professor Victor. He is so engaged with the kids, patient, and fun, but also serious when he needs to be. He teaches real self-defense skills while building confidence, discipline, and respect. It is amazing to see how much my kids have grown here. I want to start by saying I am only going to review the facts of my 5 year old sons experience, since he's 5 and his review writing skills are not up to par, which is very similar to what the instructor at Gracie Barria said about my 5 year old son. I called in last week looking to start my son in ju jitsu. They offered a trial class to see if he likes it. My wife took him as I am at work at 3:15 in the afternoon but face timed me right before he started. He was SO HAPPY and so excited to have fun. The FaceTime call ended and he starts. My son, along with I'm sure most other 5 year olds who were 2,3,4 during a world pandemic in which these children had very limited chances to interact with other children if any at all. This was his first time taking instructions from a stranger and I know he tried he absolute best. I know he didn't want to leave when the class was over and he wanted to just be there. I spoke with my wife and we talked about the class, the things we are still working on with our son and how being in the ju jitsu class with kids his age will help develop his social and motor skills, confidence and most importantly to us at least but obviously not the Gracie Barria gym, fun, which is what any 5 year old athletic situation should be, fun. My wife was looking forward to signing him up on the spot, however they did not even offer next steps for membership or anything. I sent a text message to the number that contacted me less then 2 hours after the class ended and did not get a response until late afternoon the next day, saying that their opinion is my son is not mature enough for a 4-6 yr old ju jitsu class. This brings me to today, and what led me to even write a review. In the early evening I received a phone call from Gracie Barra, after they disrespected me, my son and my family by denying my son the opportunity to be there, they call me and want to talk. It's disgusting that a sales manager probably had to ask why my son didn't sign up, they told their manager he was immature, they were probably told to call back and get the membership for their monthly sales numbers. I'm not sure how mature a 5 year old is supposed to be in order to be accepted by the overlord of ju jitsu gyms Gracie Barra, but maybe to avoid any issues with parents you can start advertising that 5 year olds need to be at a certain athletic skill set before you allow them to train at your gym. read more

My daughter has been training with the Gracie Barra Family for almost 2 years. Her transition has been truly amazing. We started off with her sitting in the back of the class quietly observing and crying because she wanted to give it a try but she was terrified.
