It has only been 2 months since we joined Lockhart's but my son LOVES IT! A friend recommended it to us when I mentioned we previously tried Taekwondo at two nearby academies without success. The first one was awful, they had zero patience with little kids and my son was very young. The second was OK, not bad but not amazing, also incredibly rigid and my son just couldn't get into it. Lockhart's (Dan and his daughter) strike a great balance between teaching them proper technique, form and discipline but also making it very fun and engaging. Most days my kid is coming home and continuing to practice what he's learning. Enrolling in martial arts classes was something that I had been interested in but, unfortunately; could not find the time. After retiring, I went about researching an appropriate facility and found that Lockhart's Karate Academy met my requirements. I encouraged my wife to join me in these classes since she is only 4' 11" tall and I wanted her to be able to protect herself in all scenarios. We feel very fortunate to have found this Karate studio as we have now been members for over a year now. Both Master Lockhart and his daughter Ms. Lockhart are exceptional instructors. They instill discipline, respect, and fun into their training curricula. Last week we attended our first in-house tournament and it's really amazing to witness how confident the young students are. We were impressed at the progression and skill level that some of these kids exhibited. It's important to note that these classes are not just for children. In fact, I believe that this type of education is just as important as one ages since the classes provide both physical as well as mental exercise. My wife and I were both in our fifties when we began training with Master Lockhart. In the beginning we were complete beginners as we tried to maintain balance during the warm-up kicks. If I could give 10* I would! I can't say enough positive things about Master Lockhart and his daughter Brittany Lockhart's Karate Program. For our family this is our kids after school activity right now and hopefully years to come. For a hands on mama who expects the best for my kids development, this program touches so many areas of my parenting demands as well as the brain development a child needs even if all they know how to do is write their name at age 5. Our boys are given many choices everyday and are expected to make good choices. This particular karate program however is Not A Choice for our kids, although at one time it was. And wow was that a mistake to take a 4 month break. We are back and will be going twice a week for as long as we can! There are 6 words that describe Lockhart Karate Academy to me: Focus- Look at my eyes when I'm talking to you, be present, hear what I'm saying, stop fidgeting, focus on your body not those around you. All life lessons we try to teach everyday that are touched on in this short period of time. Even if not in school yet, he is teaching the skills of not paying attention to others or their work and focus on their own. My sons kinder teacher has complimented me multiple times of this skill my son has that not many others do. Development- Through some early childhood development education classes I've taken, I've learned that every child's brain develops differently and at different speeds. My son started kinder at age 6 because he just wasn't ready for all the sitting and learning. I am so thankful for this karate because he had 2 years of learning and memorizing forms along with direction and placement of his body that I couldn't even remember to help him practice! But he knew, and I knew his brain was developing these skills! Control- Along with controlling your own body there is also emotional control. We all get upset, life can be frustrating, it's sad when we don't win. Master Lockhart properly handles these emotions, let's them feel, teaches how to control them and then they are able to try again! Sometimes they even win that round, and sometimes they don't, but that's life! Coordination- who knew squatting on your toes without hands, circling arms in opposite directions and a proper tumble could be so difficult. This helps in future sports, climbing, balance etc. My 4yr old got up on water skis by himself and I acknowledged this Karate program immediately for teaching these skills! Discipline- I get 2 hours twice a week where I get to sit and watch someone else do the disciplining and it is glorious! Fun- Even if they don't want to leave the house to go to karate, they arrive happy, laugh during class at their sarcastic humor, and leave smiling! I could go on and on about this program and what it does for kids and even parents! Trust me there's no other karate like this I've experienced a few. My kids are more well behaved, socialized and will be ready for whatever curve ball life throws at them. I want to thank Master Lockhart and his daughter for teaching these skills and helping me find other ways to make sure my kids are kind, safe and can have fun too in this crazy life! My son has been going to Lockhart's Karate studio for almost a year now and recently got his Orange Belt. Master Lockhart is a wonderful instructor and my son has really gained a lot of confidence since he has been going. I've been aware of Lockhart's Academy since about an hour after our first child was born. Maybe 90 minutes. My kids are fairly focused on other activities, but we've always talked about incorporating martial arts into those activities. My older daughter, 13, decided to go for it. My daughter hasn't missed a session since signing up. She even instinctively went during spring break. That might say something about her, but it sure says something about the program. Since my daughter started Lockhart's academy over a year ago, we have noticed a drastic improvement on her patience, manners, attentiveness, and respect. She absolutely loves going, and there is a good reason for that - all the instructors are great with kids. I just recently started my two teens here and they are enjoying it. We took advantage of their trial offer. The Lockharts are very friendly and I like they way they teach their classes.
