Before coming to Gracie Barra, I had already been a hardcore MMA fan for years. That said, I'd never really trained in martial arts before and the few attempts were awful: I tried wrestling in college, but the program at my school consisted of doing around 600 crunches and countless push-ups while rarely actually receiving any instruction on techniques. The judo program I tried was filled with "alphas" who were more intent on putting new guys through the floor more than anything else. As such, you can understand my hesitation about joining a martial arts gym again. It was something I was naturally curious about but, given my prior experiences, extremely nervous. So after doing a LOT of research about all the various schools in the Vancouver and Richmond areas, I settled on Gracie Barra and now, a year later, I cannot imagine having chosen any other gym. One thing that really sets GB apart from other gyms is how beginner friendly their method of instruction is. New students are paired off with more experienced students who are more interested in helping and encouraging more than anything else. If you're not in the best physical shape or have never trained in a martial art, this is hugely beneficial. It'll encourage you to keep going and ensure that you keep getting better, learning all the time. GB emphasizes the "family" aspect, which means that all the students are there to help each other grow, not crush each other to satisfy their egos. Because of this, GB has a really, really positive atmosphere that makes it easy to learn and that'll keep you coming back until suddenly, you realize that you're not the new guy anymore. That's another thing too: Gracie Barra has fantastic people. Whether it's the instructors or your fellow students, these are all people that you'd genuinely want to hang out with. Even if it wasn't at all something you were expecting or looking for when you joined, you WILL end up making friends here, from all walks of life. I cannot overemphasize how huge a boon this is, especially for beginners. The bottom-line is this: if you're really interested in martial arts and want to get in shape, give this place a try. It doesn't matter if you're grossly out of shape or laughably uncoordinated and clumsy; GB WILL make you better without EVER annihilating you or making you feel badly about yourself. If you're nervous about trying a martial arts gym, there is nothing to fear about GB: just great people and great instructors. As for the technical aspects: Gracie Barra's bread and butter is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and there are students and instruction at all belt/skill-levels, with classes divided accordingly. There are also classes for muay thai, boxing, and conditioning. The average Gracie Barra class follows this structure: Warm-up (5-10 minutes genuinely geared to WARMING YOUUP, not making you puke) Technique 1 (usually a takedown, demonstrated, then drilled back and forth with a partner) Technique 2 (something on the ground, either a transition, escape, or submission) Technique 3 (again, something else on the ground, generally a natural extension of technique 2) Sparring So yeah, if you're at all interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or curious GO TO GRACIE BARRA! This is for the one in Burnaby. Love it and miss training because am currently getting over an injury and life has gotten me a little sidetracked. The instructors/coaches(Geordie, Marco, and Chad) are awesome!!! The one thing I really didn't like and I'd encourage everyone to know about when you sign up is: if there's ever a month where you know you cannot do then let them know days or a week before going into the month otherwise you won't get your money/payment reimbursed. I told them late by 2-3days and they said they couldn't reimburse me due to late notice! Wasn't too happy to process that. I mean if I was a week late of letting them know I could understand. But only by a few days and you're willing to take peoples money for a service they're not even using from you?! Kinda really underhanded. Luckily it only happened one time and that'll be it for that. But damn people should really be aware of that policy or rule of theirs. read more

eat instructors Great gym Great classes etc. So why one star? I hate leaving bad reviews. I run businesses myself that rely on positive customer feedback, but Gracie Barra has acted extremely unethically and after considerable thought I've decided to share my experience. Long story short: I specifically asked about the terms of cancellation and I was specifically told it was month-to-month and I could cancel anytime. When it came time to cancel they charged me for an extra 2 months. Long version: I walked in and explained I had somewhere between 1-3 months before reentering the 9-5 world. I wanted to pickup some Jiu Jitsu while I had a surplus of time. I was speaking to a Brazilian employee who was very friendly and made everything seem very laid back. I asked about cancellation, saying something like, "so it's month to month and If I want to cancel I can email, call, or pop in before the next month starts and let you know?" This was answered in the affirmative. Only when I got back to work and I decided I didn't have the time to continue, did I find out about their requirement of a written cancellation notice 60 days in advance. They would not budge and I was charged for two extra months. Other frustrating pieces: It took them about a month to get me my rash guard. They never - despite me asking 3-4 times - gave me a time card, so I never got the class credit towards a stripe on my belt Long story short, I should have checked the fine print, but I remember having such a positive experience with the front desk lady that I didn't bother. I should also add that there could have been a language barrier between me and the employee. I still think this is a great gym when it comes to the Jiu Jitsu side of things, I just wish they would practice their business ethics as diligently as their open guard. read more

Loved classes, signed up and bought a uniform, was very happy. Unfortunately a friend in the martial arts community brought a controversy around some allegations against the head instructor to my attention, I won't go into details though you can google it if you would like to know more as it is public knowledge (I make no assumptions on the truth of this, just that I felt I could not continue in the school) I personally felt that this was not in line with my values and decided to cancel my membership on the basis I would not have signed up if I had know about this prior. The staff were prompt with addressing my concerns but I felt I could not continue in the school after their response, and will not refund me for the classes I did not use. read more

I wouldn't encourage attending this school if you are a woman. The segregation of the 'pink team' makes it so that you are only allowed to roll with women. If you ask (which I did repeatedly) to roll with the dudes I was told I was allowed then paired up only with women. The occasional time I rolled with a dude, he didn't know how to roll with a woman because he had no experience and was a limp fish. The coaches give speeches that are quite sexist and while they say clearly that they are focused on women that was definitely not my experience. While the coaches have a strong understanding of jiu jitsu, you receive your stripes based on the number of classes you've attended and not necessarily on merit. There are a number of women who are really happy at GB vancouver, I wasn't and I think this was also due to my previous coach being so supportive of bad ass females being on the mats. I was told to roll on my back repeatedly by different coaches because I was bigger then the other girls, yet not allowed to roll with the dudes. I regret signing on for 12 months and felt like it was a waste of my money. read more

This is an amazing place to get in shape, learn self-defense, and/or become a jiu-jitsu competitor. Both my son and I train here, and the atmosphere is inviting no matter who you are. The kids program is excellent, with students from preschool age right up to senior high-school students. The kids learn discipline, coordination, and anti-bullying techniques. The instructors are knowledgeable, respectful, and fun. My son is in kindergarten and has been training for a year-and-a-half. He loves the classes and has made great friends there. After seeing my son training, I decided to get myself a membership. I've been training a year and in that time I've become stronger, more confident, and dropped 20 pounds. The instructors give superb advice and anyone I've ever trained with has had a positive attitude. The environment is welcoming and friendly, even when the training is intense. The mats and change rooms are clean. The front desk staff is friendly and knowledgeable. And besides doing a wonderful job on the mats, the owners and instructors go the extra mile organizing social events like soccer games, dinners, and other fun optional activities. Having never done any form of martial art and desperately looking for a new activity to drain my energy, get me in shape and teach me a new skill, I decided to give Jiu Jitsu at Gracie Barra Vancouver a go. I was not disappointed. I contacted them for a free first lesson, they provided the equipment I needed for that class and I was ready to go. I was partnered up with someone who has been there for a very long time (years). He was more than happy to show me the very basics, from how to place my feet, where my arms should and, more importantly, shouldn't go. After the first lesson, I was hooked. I could tell that the classes were focussed and they fit my schedule (several fundamental classes multiple times a day). I have been returning as often as I can (3-4 times a week) to get a great work out, meet people from all over and learn a skill that that makes sense to know. I have almost completed my first month at Gracie Barra Vancouver and I do not regret it a bit. The staff is incredibly friendly, the vibe when you come in is positive and non-threatening and the people you meet are understanding about the different levels, always willing to teach or show you something you haven't seen before. I didn't really want to write up a review about this because for me to do a review about my experiences at Gracie Barra, I would have to talk a bit about my personal life and I don't like talking about myself, where everyone can read it. However I was asked to do a yelp's review about what I think of it. A Friend of mine, suggested I go and tryout Jiu-Jitsu because I just finished recovering from my amputation and being stuck in my house for about four months and dealing with the pain, both physical and mental, I didn't think I could do it. However, I did go just to humour her and to see what this so called "Graice Barra" Jiu-Jitsu is all about. So,when I show up at the Gym, I saw a few people already rolling with each other, the first thought was I'm going to hurt someone or they are going to hurt me because of my prosthetic leg" However, after talking to one of the Professors, I decided to take it off and try out. glad I did, it's helping me, mentally and physically with myself. unlike most martial art schools, it's a very relaxed environment with the most patients teachers. I reached out to these guys wanting some self defense classes for women as one of my New Year's resolutions was to protect myself more, however, what I was looking for and what they offered were completely separate. I was looking for a simple basic course, not a whole class with it. The classes are a good price for what they are, however, it was a bit out of my budget for what I needed and aiming for. I'm a huge believer that all women should know how to defend themselves. I'm really new to Jiu Jitsu, but I can honestly say that the people and atmosphere of GBVan is what got me hooked. Developing a love of the art came shortly after. I was completely over the moon when I found out there were two women's only classes a week. The women in the class were patient and helpful to a new comer like myself. And there is next to zero worry about overly aggressive macho men here. The respect level of all the practitioners, coaches, and professors I've come across is so high. The fundamentals class is amazing. Even if the class is full up, the professors still make sure to come by and make sure that you're doing the techniques properly and they'll give you pointers if you're off. As a woman practicing a full contact sport, I've never been in what I felt was a safer environment and I highly recommend GBVan to any women (any person really) looking to begin the BJJ journey. read more

GB Vancouver welcomed us as family. All instructors show great interest in the kids and are well qualified. The gym is clean and operates at all the highest standards expected at a Gracie Barra gym. Other members are involved in community building like events, food drives and contributing to the friendly atmosphere. Finally there are great technicians and serious fighters developing here. Really awesome folks! I was visiting from out of town and the professor and coaches made me feel right at home.

I have had tons of fun training here, and everyone is super friendly and inviting. The facility are in top shape, but just a tad on the small size for how big their classes are (always feels crowded when rolling). The instructors are great and you get a lot of hands on corrections by them. As well as one on one demonstrations. But unfortunately I will never go back as I now get grossed out being there. You see a short while ago I developed a nasty infection on my neck. Now I have been training in Jujitsu for years and until now have never had the pleasure of catching a skin infection. Of course anyone who has practiced a grappling martial art for long enough knows that eventually you're likely to catch a little bit of something. But this shit turned out to be quite nasty, and took a good solid 2 weeks of antibiotics pills and cream to get ride of. Meanwhile I had to deal with gross scabbing all down my neck. I'm just really happy it didn't turn out to be viral. Mats should be cleaned and disinfected after every class no matter what, as they are a huge breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. And please people shower your ass before coming to class and take advantage of the shower rooms provided after. read more

After years of thinking about joining a MMA gym, the first gym I tried was Gracie Barra Vancouver, and I have absolutely no regrets. Being a quiet personality-type, I didn't find the gym to be over-saturated with testosterone or egos, so I integrated quickly. This was facilitated by the friendly staff and coaches, who don't judge you based on the colour of your belt, if you wear brand name gear, etc. Although I only 'rolled' a few times, my experience with the Jiu-Jitsu aspect of the gym was a positive one. Sure everyone has individual personalities, but the coaches try their best to pair you up with an experienced and friendly student who will do their best to make you feel comfortable under intimidating circumstances. From the feedback I have garnered from dedicated 'Jits' students, the level of Jiu-Jitsu training you will receive is second-to-none, and you will have an opportunity to observe and train with some of the best-of-the-best that Vancouver has to offer. Where I can provide more detailed perspective is regarding Muay Thai/Kickboxing/Boxing. I have been dedicated to the stand-up aspect of the gym for over 3 years now, and it's been a very positive experience for me. The boxing is taught by Manuel, who is an excellent, technical boxer, who takes the time to make sure you understand the basics of boxing, footwork and technique. Always a pleasure to talk to and train with, Manny will show you the finer points of true technical boxing, in a non-intimidating manner. My true passion is Muay Thai and Kick boxing, and that's what I train exclusively. Coach Dan Slobodin has been absolutely excellent from day 1, when I barely knew how to throw 'proper' punches. Depending on class size, Dan takes his time to give out as much personal attention as he can, calmly correcting technique to help students evolve quickly, and intelligently matching up students to make the experience positive and friendly. Always starting the class with the basics, you never feel like you are in over-your-head, with strong attention to proper technique and fundamentals (technique over power). With the option of an advanced class, the room to grow is there, and Dan will make sure that when the time is right and you are sufficiently trained, you will have the opportunity to put your skills to the test in a controlled, safe and friendly manner. Dan has always made himself available to anyone for one-on-one attention after a class, to help answer any questions you may have. I can honestly say that the core group of fellow Kick boxers at Gracie Barra are very friendly, willing to help and are non-overwhelming. With the great training received from Dan and the stand-up fighters, I felt confident enough to compete in my first tournament (Tiger Balms), and couldn't have done it without their help and support. Overall, Gracie Barra is a relaxed, family atmosphere where egos are checked at the door and the focus is on technique, exercise, gaining self-confidence and having fun. My name is Steve and I have trained at Gracie Barra in Vancouver for a year now. I have done taekwondo and traditional boxing in the past and at this point in time wanted to learn grappling skills. As in the case of most of us looking for a new gym, I had a list of criteria that I needed to satisfy in order to join and train at a facility. Therefore it is this list and results that I feel would be most helpful for those reading this review. I work evenings - therefore the gym schedule was a major priority for me. Most gyms have numerous evening classes with few daytime options. However, Gracie Barra has a full compliment of day classes with two new options having been added in the past year. These classes are also scheduled in such a way that you can do two concurrently if you choose. At the top of most people's lists is price and value. In this regard I believe Gracie Barra is very competitive. There are various packages and membership options geared towards individual needs. One of the big differences is that with so many training options offered one has the opportunity of training around their days schedule rather than choreographing their day around the gyms schedule. Any club/membership can seem to offer poor value if it is not used or poorly attended. That is on the individual not the gym. Gracie Barra gives one ample opportunity to train and develop. Next on my list is cleanliness and physical plant. This subject tells one a great deal about the gym and the individuals who run the facility and those who train there. The gym is well maintained in that the showers, restrooms and changing rooms are very clean and not allowed to be neglected. Perhaps even more important, the mats and training areas are cleaned and sanitized numerous times throughout the day. In conjunction with this, members are held accountable for their own cleanliness, grooming and uniform status. As someone new to grappling I was made very aware of my own responsibilities. No gym can eradicate all germs etc. but it must be said that Gracie Barra does an excellent job at protecting its facility and its members. The instructors at Gracie Barra are absolutely terrific. What makes them special is the wonderful blend of tactical expertize along with a genuine compassion and interest in their students. The instructors truly love the sport and try to pass this passion on to each and every student. The classes can be difficult and challenging at times with personal limits being tested. Yet all that is asked is that you commit and give a genuine effort - this is then celebrated and respected. Finally, what I consider the intangibles. I do not think I have ever trained at a facility where I have enjoyed and appreciated the instructors and people around me more. The tone is set by the teachers and then mirrored by the students. This Gym Gracie Barra Vancouver is by far the best for all ages, and i cant stress the all ages factor. The support system is amazing. I signed up my son about 4 years ago and it was the best thing i ever did for him and my whole family.Now my family of 5 practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and we are all loving it . For my kids they learn not only self-defence ,but discipline and how to interact with other children and older people. The Coaches and Professors are so involved with making each and everyone meet their personal goal and its great to have a place were everyone has the respect level and understanding that we are here to learn and grow in a positive manner. There is also many more types of classes being taught and i can assure you that you will be happy with doing one or all of them as many of the students do . Great martial arts academy! Instructors are all very professional, friendly, and approachable. What I enjoy most is there are no meatheads. Young kids right to the oldest member in their 60's participate in the Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes. As an older gentleman and business professional, it is important for me to minimize the potential for severe injuries. I've visited other gyms where I felt like I was just a punching bag for their young competitors. Here I feel safe with so many mature older individuals looking for a safe place to workout. It's a great fit for the everyday person looking to learn jiu-jitsu without worrying about being injured by a young overzealous big guy. read more
