This is a great place to train jiu-jitsu. The head instructor, Tom, has many years experience instructing as a black belt. He does a fantastic job teaching, answering questions with patience, and creates a welcoming, safe, and fun environment. I had prior Brazilian jiu-jitsu experience when I came in here as a blue belt, but I had previewed some of the "Gracie Combatives" videos in the past and had always been impressed and interested to learn these techniques. Gracie Combatives, the adult beginner program here, is excellent stuff for real-world self-defense situations and all the techniques include punch protection and awareness. The techniques are also very useful as a solid base for those interested in continuing jiu-jitsu as a sport/hobby. The structured and standardized approach that Ryron and Rener Gracie have come up with is really helpful to get all the details of the techniques down. Videos of the curriculum are available through GracieUniversity.com so that what is taught in class can be reviewed anytime online. At most jiu-jitsu gyms, you come in on day one, learn a technique or two, and then roll (spar). There are pros and cons to this but it can be a recipe for either injury or ingraining bad habits by trying to just wing it or having to rely on strength/aggression when just starting out. The sink or swim environment can also turn away those who need jiu-jitsu the most. Here at the Gracie Academy, students spend the better part of a year training and then testing through the Gracie Combatives program before they are permitted to spar (the exception is if you already have sufficient experience from another gym, then you're allowed to spar). This approach allows students to focus on mastering the techniques with a cooperative partner before having to apply them against a fully-resisting opponent who is also trying to use the techniques on you. While it takes patience and commitment if you're really itching to spar, I think it's a great idea for longevity and to create a solid foundation to build on. We have a ton of folks training in the Combatives class now but there's still room on the mat so if you're interested, come talk to Tom and check out the 10-day free trial. The advanced class, Master Cycle, is gaining momentum as well; we have a few folks with prior experience and now people are starting to graduate into Master Cycle from Combatives. Also, for a kids' marital arts program, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a no-brainer. With bullying being such a serious issue these days, for a child to able to defend one's self without injuring the bully is a priceless skill. I would be nervous to have my child take karate and then get in trouble for defending himself by punching or kicking a bully, or worse, getting taken to the ground where karate can't be used. Of course, women are welcome and encouraged to join the regular adult program, but we also have an additional program called "Women Empowered" that's specialized for women's self defense. The Gracie brothers are doing a great service by offering an amazing, legitimate women's self defense program that's jiu-jitsu based. And once you test through, you get a pink belt. I been to Gracie Jiu Jitsu for a good couple of months and really liked it over there. I had to stop going because of an unrelated foot injury which is no good but Im looking forward to being back here when I'm good to go again.
