This is an interesting place. Graffiti artists showcase their talents or express their feelings drawing on both sides of the alley and also on the floor. I saw some interesting pieces. They are aesthetic, beautiful and there are some goofy stuff -funny and intriguing. It is an ongoing project. I saw young people with spray paint adding on new ideas. I hosted a Meetup for photographic artists on a cold, snowy day here recently, and the photos we captured were amazing. Prior to coming here, I had heard that it was overrun with homeless and could be potentially dangerous, but I looked into it and felt it was more than safe, particularly in the winter, when there are less people in the actual alley, if any at all. It's a great spot for something different to add to your portfolio, and we'll likely make it a yearly Meetup here. read more

There is some excellent graffiti here but it's a short tunnel and there isn't much of it. Talented artists who have done great work in a limited space. While some call it Poet's Alley and others call it Bubble Gum Alley, it is most commonly known as Graffiti Alley. I found it to be the perfect colorful and artistic outdoor adventure on this very cold but sunny Sunday morning in mid-February. The narrow alleyway sits on East Liberty, just steps from the historic Michigan Theater and two blocks from UM's Central Campus. For well over 20 years, it has served as a symbol of Ann Arbor's thriving public art scene. In mid-summer, you'll find this alley full of both admirers and artists who leaving their mark of artistic expression on the brick wall canvas. On this cold Michigan morning, I'm the only visitor enjoying the smattering of vibrant colors in this unique corridor. If you are looking to get out for some fresh air in the midst of the pandemic, you may find that a stroll through Graffiti Alley to be just the ticket. read more

Honestly, I think every city of decent size should have something like this - a graffiti-friendly zone where novices and experts and everyone in between can come to express themselves with a spraycan, a paint bucket and rollers and brushes, a fat tipped marker or even a fire extinguisher that's been emptied of water and refilled with paint. Graffiti Alley is a practice space, a message board and a local landmark. And it draws youthful selfie seekers like a light draws moths. With it's equal opportunity of expression, well, at least for those who can make it here and procure supplies, Graffiti Alley isn't always going to have outdoor museum quality work. And you might see a precision piece with something utterly lazy, trite and unskilled scrawled atop it. Some paintings are great, some good, some mediocre, some hilariously bad and some just bad. But that's the nature of the beast and if you don't like something come back in a week or two and it'll probably look different. Or better yet just paint over it yourself, whether you can paint or not. Worst case scenario, you can supply a fresh base coat for the next aspiring spraypainter. Graffiti Alley is constantly changing and mutating, like a block-long, multi-colored Etch-a-Sketch, or a graffiti tunnel lava lamp. So get pics of stuff you like, especially if you painted it cause who knows how long it'll hang around. Clearly people have brought ladders here, too, and even repelling equipment to descend from the rear wall of the parking garage on the end of the alley for one balls out multi-colored tag several stories up just surrounded by a sea of red brick. I can't say I'd recommend going that route, not unless you have no fear of heights and spotters to flank the alley and any other vantage pointers as I assume the authorities laissez-faire attitude about Graffsterdam here only extends so far. I doubt the owners of the parking garage would much appreciate it either. But hey, that's one piece out of many thousands that's maybe a little over the line. And it is a marvel to behold, and still hanging in up there, perhaps cause it would be such a pain to buff it. Music might fill the air here and weed smoke might waft through it. Graffiti writers might leave behind freebies on pieces of cardboard. The paintings even extend to the ground below. It's an eye candy emporium. And I think it's time for me to upload some new photos for this listing as all my old ones have been covered over. Never change, Graffiti Alley, and by that I mean always change. read more

It is a really cool place to check out for the cool grafitti but the pictures do definitely make it look a lot bigger than what it is. My friend and I took our motorcycles down there and people were getting mad we brought our bikes on the side walk for two seconds to get in there ‍. Once in there, you could clearly tell homeless people reside in the alley as there was a mattress used in there and some other things. Other than that it's clean but short. Graffiti sometimes may not be for children that's for sure. So make sure before you step in. Cool place to check out but only for about ten minutes and you're done. read more

While we were in Detroit graffiti alley was a pretty cool looking spot check out my wife and I visited. It had a lot of different graffiti public art things like that all over the place and it was big alley. It has some pretty cool looking ones and then some that don't really belong in and it's not really are too much really I mean I guess it is but somewhere just cleaner and nicer than others but still cool thing to check out read more

Holy hard to find location! GPS has no idea where this place is in comparison to the normal businesses/locations. Once we found it, the Alley was a really cool place to see, and the art was fun to look at. It is, in fact, an alley, as the name implies, so cleanliness is not the best. read more

It's dirty. It can smell bad. With that said, I have to say this alley blows my mind. After hearing and reading about this alley, I had to check it out after a visit to the University of Michigan. The walls are full of names, quotes, song lyrics, pop culture references, political statements, anything. It was cool to see lyrics from Kendrick Lamar's HUMBLE. scrawled on a wall a couple weeks after its release. For the artsy type, it's the perfect place for a cool photo. At any time, there may be dancers and singers hanging out. It's vibrant. There's culture. It's not for everyone, but it's cool to check out if you are a lover of street art. read more

One weekend in Ypsilanti, MI and we just were looking for stuff to do around the area. And here we ended up. In Ann Arbor, downtown-ish, I believe, is this cute little area of restaurants and bars and this place. It's a bit small, but it was very interesting. You can tell that the art/graffiti changes with the times. I really enjoyed walking down this alley and taking in what the artists had to say via their art and words. So glad we happened upon this spot. I'm sure it won't feature the same things if we were to return in a few months. But, that's ok. I'm sure it'll be just as fascinating. read more

I love street art, graffiti, and all things hipster, even though I do not consider myself one (but isn't that what a hipster would say?!) That being said, I am biased towards this wonderful, colorful, place. I love Ann Arbor, and I love graffiti, so how could I not love this gem located in downtown Ann Arbor? Anytime I go to Ann Arbor, I visit the graffiti alley. The photographer in me loves to take artsy pictures in front of the walls. Many a people actually have their wedding and band photos taken here. This alley is full of vibrant graffiti. It would be quite easy to miss the entrance to this alley if one didn't know it was located there, which makes it even more exciting to visit. Yes, it's a dirty alley and smells how alleys do. I don't suggest going if you're a germaphobe, but if you love colorful artsy things as much as I do, take the time to visit this landmark. Is it worth it to check it out? Yes. Is it Snap worthy? DEFINITELY. Will you make all your friends jealous when they find out you visited downtown Ann Arbor and the graffiti alley? Visited Ann Arbor for the first time and had a great time! The graffiti alley was a surprise to us. We saw a wall of graffiti and was like "oh cool" then all of a sudden a whole alley of graffiti was there. HOLY S*** was the word of the day. A very cool site to check out. Every college campus has its perks and hidden treasures of cool things. Graffiti Alley is one of UMich's hidden treasures. I came across this while walking down Liberty, which is lined with lots of yummy restaurants and coffee shops. It is littered with graffiti and gives you a cool photo op. Stop by to check it out if you can! Just be careful and don't go at night or by yourself. I did see people going here to catch a smoke. read more

This place is foul. There's a little decent graf, but mostly scribbled rants of the self-absorbed. These bored bourgeois youth imagine their inane platitudes are worth spewing a whole lot of ozone-depleting aerosol. It's cool in a trainwreck kind of way for all of about 30 seconds, if you can stand the putrid smell of urine. Tips: wade through the trash and palpable entitlement they leave behind, and try to ignore someone getting dope-sick in the corner. The fact that those walls are actually private property (they simply can't afford to paint it over 24/7) is a depressing sign of our culture that celebrates "the emperor's new clothes." Vestiges of a thoughtful, twenty-seven room mural that took Katherine Trombeau six months of her life to create remain in tragic bits on the ceiling, long since defiled almost in entirety. Art gallery it is not; a laughable and lazy attempt at creativity---most definitely. read more
