We've utilized the zoo pass. I brought my toddler to story time reading, but the reader shouted for various characters' parts and it scared her. Maybe we'll try again another season. While they have a fair amount of meetings and activities, I wish they had more. I've been a bit spoiled enjoying some of Franklin Public Library creative programming.

And, unless something changed recently, the biggest in the United States. You enter through the east building (after certain hours, you need an ID) and right away you can find a shelf with the latest publications by UWM professors. That's right on the side of the Grind, where you can get you coffee or tea - a very popular spot.

So I guess what you do is, you go inside this building, and you have a thing in mind to read about. Type that into a computer-- BUT DON'T READ ABOUT IT ON THE INTERNET! Instead, scroll down to the bottom of the Wikipedia page, ignoring all the information there, and look at the things called "sources". Some of these "sources" may just be other websites...but some may be books! And they may be in the very building you are standing in! Ask a librarian for help figuring out where you might locate this book. This library is huge and you can easily get lost in the stacks. Love that. Much of the ground floor has recently-ish been updated to accommodate more modern needs, but most of the rest of the library remains somewhat dated. The coolest part, in my opinion, is that the American Geographical Society houses their collection here, on the 4th floor. You can look at just about anything they have, depending on what kind of access you have. It's just fascinating!

Zero Accountability from Wauwatosa Leadership -- Not One Response Until I Went Public…read more On August 1st, I experienced an incident with a Wauwatosa Fire Department engine that likely caused permanent worsening of my tinnitus. I immediately sent multiple detailed emails -- including my personal phone number -- to: Fire Chief Jim Case - No response Assistant Fire Chief Ryan Stanwood (emailed twice) - No response City Attorney Jennifer Tate (emailed twice) - No response Mayor Dennis McBride - No response Fire & Police Commission Chair Danielle Long - No response It took a public social media post over a week later for anyone from Wauwatosa to respond -- and even then, it was Administration Assistant Chief Barbara Kadrich, who tried to spin it as me not getting "the response I was looking for," when the truth is I got no response at all from any of them. Barbara also refuses to correspond via email, meaning there's no written record -- which is unacceptable for public accountability. Every single one of these officials had my email address and phone number from day one. If they had time to talk among themselves about my post, they had time to talk to me directly. This city government is tax-funded, yet clearly believes basic constituent communication is optional. If this is how they treat legitimate concerns about safety and injury, imagine how they handle everything else. Wauwatosa residents -- remember this when these names come up on your ballot. Public service means serving the public, not ignoring them until they cause a PR problem.

Milwaukee has a lot of western suburbs, and this one is quite far from the downtown area but it's also a nice place and one with the good custard and some good food. Not bad at all. The page said the realtime wait time was just 6 minutes - yes 6 minutes - but I stood in line over 20 minutes just to get to the front desk. Needless to say, their "paperless" is a load of crap, as you must have a PAPER copy of proof of residence. Yes, it is 2018 and not 1956, so my lease and all of my utilities are paperless, and they would NOT accept an ecopy, and would not allow me to print (they told me they "can't print here", even though there is a printer 3 feet away on their desktop. I left, ran home and grabbed the ONLY paper I have with proof of residence - my USPS confirmation of mail forwarding - and returned. I arrived right at 12:00 at the door (I'm literally less than 10 minutes away) and the lot was almost empty and the door locked. Yes, they claim to be open until 12. What a friggin waste of a beautiful Saturday morning. Government incompetence at its finest.

I was able to book a 3:30 p.m. appointment for the same afternoon. When I arrived at the DMV around 3:15, there was already a long line of people waiting for walk-in service. The walk-in line fed a single counter, while the appointment counter right next to it had no one waiting. As soon as the staff member finished helping the current customer, she called me over. I felt a little sheepish walking past the long line, but she smiled and said, "Don't worry about it." The rest of the visit couldn't have gone more smoothly. The staff member was friendly and efficient. I had my new photo taken, signed a couple of forms, and was on my way just a few minutes later. If I could offer one piece of advice, it would be this: if your schedule allows, make an appointment before you go. You'll almost certainly be glad you did.

I recently had to the DMV Service Center for a title/license plate transfer and like most people, I dreaded going in there. Years ago, I worked in the automobile business and the DMV was about the last place I ever wanted to visit, but had to as part of the job. In the old days, you had to stand in a serpentine line and get a number, like a supermarket delicatessen or bakery. You got a ticket for #85 and you looked at the red LED sign that said, "Now serving 52" or some other number eliciting a load groan. You'd find a chair and enjoy the ambience that could best be described as Early American Prison Mess Hall. When you did get up to the window, you might encounter a reasonably nice person or a transferred prison guard, or at least, someone with that "rules are rules" attitude. If you didn't properly dot your Ts and cross your I's, you got sent back to the chairs to get the form right. Not unlike a high school history exam. No longer! You still have to stand in line to get a number. Nowadays, you get a number that has a letter preceding it. The letters are a code for your visit's purpose. Today it was C for drivers license and I was for title and license plates. You can't tell where you are in the queue because the I and C numbers are very different. Numbers are called by a disembodied, but pleasant, computer voice that are also displayed on large video monitors on either end of the hall. People are still taken in order, first come first served, but the decor has changed from Battleship Gray and tan to bright colors and decent lighting. And the chairs are reasonably comfortable. The window operators today are there to help, and work with you to make sure everything is correct - at least, that's the kind of operator I've met here in the last few years. When I had my drivers license renewed a few years ago, the photographer (button pusher, actually) made sure I was actually smiling in the photo. Some of the tricks to avoiding long lines include getting there early, like right when the doors open. Download proper forms from the Wisconsin DOT website and get them filled out in advance. Have all your ducks in a row, and try to go on Tuesday-Thursday, in the middle of the month. Mondays are miserable days to go because everyone else does. The week before the end of the month is awful because procrastinators are trying to get renewal stickers. Or mail it to Madison. But sometimes, ya just gotta go to the counter. This one is one of the better ones.
