Our visit to Graham's Port Lodge in Porto was an enriching and memorable experience. My fiancé and I had booked a guided tour in English, and were pleased to find ourselves in a small, private group--just the right size to keep things intimate without losing the depth of the presentation.
The tour began with a 12-minute video that provided an excellent overview of port wine's history and Graham's legacy within it. It was the perfect introduction, offering enough context without overwhelming us with information.
From there, we were guided through the lodge where Graham's ages and stores their barrels. This portion of the tour was especially fascinating--we learned not just about the technical process of making port, but also about the Duoro Valley region where the grapes are grown. The historical and geographical insights added depth and meaning to the tasting that followed.
We also had a chance to see their vintage port cellars, which added a sense of tradition and legacy to the experience. It's one thing to taste a wine; it's another entirely to stand beside bottles that have been aging for decades (or centuries!) and understand the patience and craftsmanship behind them.
The tour concluded with a private tasting in an elegant setting. Each port was distinct, and my tasting was thoughtfully paired with small bites that complemented each pour beautifully. A particularly special tour were the postcards Graham's provided at the tasting that they post for free. We were able to write a few out to loved ones, which will be a neat little surprise when they receive them!
Our guide (whose name, unfortunately, I forgot) was knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about both port wine and Graham's history. She handled questions with ease and kept the tour engaging from start to finish.
Whether you're a port wine novice or a seasoned enthusiast, Graham's offers a tour that is both educational and enjoyable. It was one of the highlights of our time in Porto, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. read more
