Check in was easy, our room was ready. We brought our own map & metro map and were ready to explore Paris. We asked about tours and skipping lines, free or discounted museums in Paris; a flyer by a tour company on the counter was pointed out to us. Location is good, we are around the corner from the metro & a short walk to the Eiffel Tower & Napoleon's tomb. A self serve laundry mat is down the block. We have a big window & nice view. We are 5 minutes from a large supermarket, many gourmet shops & wonderful restaurants on Rue Cler. Our buffet breakfast was an assortment of breads, meats, cheeses, fruits, yogurts, oj, scrambled eggs & sautéed mushrooms. Breakfast wasn't fresh, it felt like a Costco not Paris meal. A pot of hot watery coffee was brought to our table; I would have loved a Parisian French press. There was a Nespresso in the lobby, €2 per cup. The breakfast room was worn, the chairs uncomfortable & most mornings we ate on chipped dishes. There was an interesting mix of retirees talking politics & those in their 30's working on laptops or having zoom meetings here. Our room was clean & daily our bed was made, garbage emptied & towels replaced. Wi-Fi was very good. The shower & bathroom are not for someone large. Nor is room #62, both of us couldn't move around at the same time. The towel warmer was lovely & the in room safe appreciated. The linens were very worn with holes & the small thin towels did not dry. The small shower had a rainfall shower head, so my long hair got wet each time I showered, actually the bathroom got soaked. There was a leak on the side of the shower head, so much of the water hit the shower walls not me. The plastic seal was hanging off the bottom of the shower glass, the floor was soaked. There was no shower cap, conditioner, hairdryer... we purchased toiletries at the pharmacy around the corner. The sink was clogged and the water drained from the hole at the top. The curtains were hanging off the wall. The queen bed was comfortable, and the temperature was comfortable. Our t-v showed English BBC & CNN. We did not have a small refrigerator nor a coffee maker. We purchased our own water at the supermarket. Our room was in front of the elevator, we heard conversations at night & early mornings. When people moved in or out of the small elevator luggage often banged, startling us from our sleep. We heard other conversations around us. When we waited for the elevator we heard people in their rooms talking. We did not hear street noise. We did not smell any smoke. The same woman was working at breakfast room weekday morning and she was trying hard to serve coffee, clean up and replenish. There were usually 3 or 4 people down at the front desk that looked busy. There wasn't a concierge, we asked a few questions, Valeria was very knowledgeable & helpful. Roger was always upbeat & cheerful, asking about our day. If I were a woman alone I would never stay here. There is no deadbolt lock on the door. Once we were inside there is no way to secure ourselves in our room. The Hotel De L'Empereur was recommended by Frommer's & Trip Advisor. Ig it were updated & minimally improved this would be the charming boutique hotel we expected. If we were staying for a couple of days, rather than a week, we would've been comfortable. But, by the end of the week it was getting very old, crowded & uncomfortable here. I realize this is Paris, we spent over €1,600 for our superior room with a queen sized bed. We had to purchase many basic items that were provided in the 9 other European hotels we visited.

We got the superior room with a view. The room was the perfect size. I loved the Parisian esthetic. I was able to sleep comfortably every night. They do serve breakfast for an extra cost. I personally never took advantage as there is a cafe right around the corner however, it is an option. The location of this hotel is ideal as it is walking distance to the Eiffel Tower, Metro, and Champs Elysees. If you are looking for a quiet stay I would definitely consider this hotel.

The mains sockets in the room are plentiful and well placed which is great for charging phones and camera batteries. Breakfast is free and consists of a continental, help yourself style buffet with croissants, pain au chocolate, bread, cheese, ham, yogurts etc all on offer alongside a coffee machine and a fresh organs juicing machine. Public transport links are obviously plentiful being next to a main train station and mean you can travel anywhere in the city in reasonable time. We had a window, but it only opened into an air shaft, which only provided bugs. There was no cool breeze. The fans never lowered the temperature of the room. It was always 76-77F. I always bring my own carbon monoxide and room temperature gauge. One night, it was 62F outside and our room was 77F. On our day, we were told the engineer would look at it. A few hours later, we were told some mumbo jumbo excuse as to why each room's AC couldn't be adjusted. Here is what he said, I have all this on video, "The system is functioning. What's happening is just if outside is cold, the system automatically...in, eh, all the building, it will be lower. So that is why it's not functioning at max, because it's automatically for all rooms. We cannot set it for everyone." DOES THIS MAKE SENSE TO ANYONE? The lobby was cooler than our room. The hallway was cooler than our room. Did the engineer even come? Did the guy who told us all this was just finding out that this is how their AC worked? Lost in translation? There were other rooms available for our last night, maybe ones with windows facing the street. Instead of offering a solution, there was NOTHING. Additionally, their WiFi was out of service for several hours during our first day. Price was reasonable (about €200 per room per night) as this hotel is conveniently located within walking distance of RER, Metro and long distance trains. The history with Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir is an added bonus. Both our rooms were comfortable and the service by the front desk and kitchen staff was excellent. They offer complimentary coffees and croissants but breakfast and other drinks are extra. They also have a lift which was useful to transport our bags up to our fourth floor rooms versus using the stairs. An area for improvement is room service. We had to remind them to replenish the soap in the showers and they did not replenish toilet paper either. We managed as we had two rooms but this is not acceptable for a six night stay when we got the rooms cleaned every second day. Will consider staying here again.

It's very old cemetery and was kind of beautiful to explore. During the day the gates are open. I found out a famous actress was buried there. Also Impressionist painter Edgar Degas. A couple other interesting people include the inventor of the saxophone and the executioner of King Louis! The hotel itself has nice amenities. Free coffee by the lobby. Breakfast is about €12. You can do laundry in the basement for €9 which was convenient for us. The room has a kitchen and it's fully stocked with dishes. Theres a pull out couch. There's a couple fans. Otherwise the windows can be opened completely wide open. The beds are a little stiff for our preference. If you want new sheets you have to ask for it. There's no regular housekeeping. The bad things about this property is as follows, very rude unfriendly staff, the would ignore you every time you came in and wouldn't even say hello unless you instigated it. The lead in rooms are very small which would not be a issue if they had air conditioning, the rooms were very hot and impossible to sleep as you couldn't open the window due to the position, it would have been above your head whilst asleep and it wouldn't open with curtains closed. Overall the stay was ok I would stay again based on location but only in cooler months.
