The market is between the university and Charlottesville's idea of downtown; it's not actually the easiest place to park at but I walked by. What I sought was distinctive flatbreads and some accoutrements for my foul medames, which they provided. It wasn't a place that had a lot of fresh food items, but the freezer was well stocked and it had canned goods that wouldn't be the easiest to find elsewhere. Other than the older gentleman who sits near a front corner & turns away from you every time you come near him, this was a welcoming & chock-filled market. There is a lot to be found here. Food & non-food items from many Middle Eastern & Central European countries. Prices are okay but lean towards more-than-affordable. This is a FANTASTIC MARKET and run by a wonderful, hard-workng family. I first came to know them when the father was running the store - a welcoming, warm, and generous man. Unfortunately, he had a serious stroke that affected his ability to communicate a few years back, so this may be the "older gentleman" that "Bobbi S." referred to in a previous comment. They have the best fresh chicken - meat that tastes like REAL chicken - as it's from a local farm. There is a huge selection of international foods, spices, dry goods, and refrigerated items. This is a business with a "Wear a Mask" sign at the door. When I went shopping on Saturday, the owner (the older gentleman), one of his sons and a customer were not wearing any face coverings. I felt unsafe, grabbed a few things I needed quickly and headed to the cashier. The owner's other son was at the cashier, wearing a mask on his mouth only. Since I was interacting with him in close proximity, I asked him if he could pull his mask up his nose. First, he pulled his mask up. Then as he was scanning my items, he asked how covering his nose will help with the virus. I said it does help, the virus accumulates and spreads through the nose. He started acting very defensive; he said the research shows masks are useless. I said that the research shows they actually work and that I am a scientist and worked in Immunology field for years (I have a PhD from UVA and I worked at UVA Immunology and Neuroimmunology as Research Scientist). Then he continued to say "you can't force me to wear a mask", which I replied "I am not forcing you to do anything, I am simply asking you to wear it properly as a courtesy to your customers, if anything". He kept saying he is not going to wear a mask and that I can't force him. At that point, feeling threatened for my safety, I said "this is ridiculous, I am not shopping here" and I left the groceries he was scanning. On my way out, he said "come back when you do more research"!!! This is a local business I have used for 15 years now, even though the prices of the items I buy are cheaper online. I always thought I would rather have them make money then me saving some. Not anymore. I felt like they had no regard for the well-being and safety of their customers or themselves. I also felt like they were disrespectful in how they handle differences in views, not to mention the total hypocrisy with their mask policy. read more

Such nice people. We were just wandering by killing time and exploring when we saw Smoki in the window. Smoki is the KING of peanut puffs, straight outta Serbia (though I know them from Slovenia). We raced in to be greeted by a plethora of other stuff that I've missed over the years. Jams. Biscuits. Even from čevapi! There's a great mix of Balkan and middle eastern produce here, and moreover the guy behind the counter was just so helpful and friendly. It's an hour away from us but it's gone right to the top of our list of stops when we make our pilgrimage to Charlottesville. read more

The gentlemen that work here are wonderful. Very friendly and helpful. They usually always have tea or coffee to sip on while browsing the shelves, which are packed with wonderful ingredients and items I am unable to get anywhere else in Charlottesville. The prices are good too. Bulk olives to marinate at home, dried bulk snacks, a large selection of oils, vinegars, and syrups in a variety of flavors and origins. I love this store. read more

Since moving to Charlottesville from Northern Virginia, I came close to reliving my trips to Moby Dick House of Kebob via Sticks Kebob Shop. No longer. Afghan Grand Market is the real deal in kebobs. I had the shami kebob platter which included salad, FRESH naan, rice, meat and a side (I got channa masala that did not disappoint). A little pricy for lunch but well worth it for authenticity. read more

If you have just been invited to a party and don't know what to bring, I stop in here for there baklava and Jordan almonds. It's always a crowd pleaser. They take credit and debit, they also carry hibiscus tea but everyone knows they carry it and are often restocking it. If you do t see it ask. Also they are the only place in town I can find grape leaves. If you ate stuffing grape leaves, they have your back. They have kosher and halal, options as well as the strongest coffee in the city. Ask for Turkish coffee, it'll wake you for days. Friendly family staff. read more

Great shop! Olives, dried fruits (apricots, pineapple, papaya), nuts, pita bread, some Indian items, feta cheese and other white cheeses (recommended, very good). Prices by the way are very fair, competitive. You'll not be the loser by buying everything here instead of at Reid or Harris Teeter. Very very nice people at Grand. BTW, save plenty buying olives and oil here rather than across the street at high-priced purple establishment! read more

Grand Market is a great source for food. They carry an extensive selection of foods. Need Pakistani pastry? A large selection of spices and oils? Ayran? Bulgarian cheese? Frozen foods? They have it all. They also have hookah supplies. They're super friendly as well. read more
