Mr De Vilbiss hired an well known architect by the name of "Allen Aaron Cook" from Sacramento to design his building. When completed in 1889, the building was said to be one of the finest and most prominent commercial buildings in Winters ! The first floor had an office/ bar / dining room / kitchen & meeting rooms. On the second floor were 40 rooms and a parlor. The 2 story brick building survived the devestating Earthquake of 1892, but the 72 foot cupola as seen in the old photo of 1890 was destroyed in the fire of 1915. The building was first sold to I.V. Hugh's in 1896 and again in 1917 to T. H. Fenley. This building became a place where Mr. Fenley conducted his groceries and hardware business. In 1930 the building was reaquired by a member of the De Vilbiss Family and remains in the family ever-since. . The tragic backstory of the grapes? The world may never know, as tasting notes were apparently classified information. The tasting is free if you buy a bottle, which is a brilliant strategy. By the end, you're so desperate for a label with information on it, you'll happily pay. It's the perfect spot to bring the family, enjoy the scene, and have a glass of... well, something red. Just don't ask what it is. It ruins the surprise.

Staff was friendly and drove through regularly. The peacocks were fun... fearless, too, so we got a good look at those gorgeous birds. Quail, woodpeckers, a variety of birds. A great place for naps.

We met with Ethel, the owner of the property, who showed us around the grounds. Her dog Bo joined us on the tour, and he was fun to watch. If you want an outdoor wedding, there are locations on the property to do so. You can rent a couple different arches from them for approx. $35.00 each. They also provide tables and folding chairs for an extra fee. You also would need to provide your own tablecloths, etc. If you have an outdoor reception, there is an area near the house to do so. There are even lights strung up already around the trees, and hook ups for electrical items. There is a barn to the left of the property. On the way to the barn, we passed the building that has 2 restrooms inside. ((modern out-house)). I loved the barn! The barn is pretty big and even has a loft. You can have your ceremony in the rear of the barn and have the reception inside the barn. The cost for an outside ceremony near the house is $1,500. The use of the barn is $2,500. If you choose to have your ceremony in the back of the barn it is $500 + $2,500 for the barn, for $3,000 total. Also, you are required to pay $20 per each security guard. For a smaller wedding or reception, you may only need to have one. There is also someone available to help direct the vehicles on where to park. ((and there is plenty of parking)). Unfortunately, this location was over our budget, as the price does not include other items..such as the food and any alcohol, etc. There are even bells in a tower that can be rung for your ceremony. This location can also be used for other gatherings and celebrations. Ethel is very sweet and welcomed us inside her home as well. She will respond to you promptly via email if you email her. Consider her property if you need a nice outdoor or indoor place.
