Such a beautiful venue, and honestly, I think it deserves some more attention and appreciation! As the photographer of my sister's wedding, I knew that lighting was going to be important. The lighting here was really nice once it was past noon. The inside of the chapel was timeless and beautiful. It is a lot roomier than I expected inside. The chapel pretty much comes with everything you will need, including the stereo system and a changing room for the bride. We didn't even decorate the chapel because it was pretty enough the way it was. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a venue in Solano County. The history of the chapel is amazing, and the people who work here clearly adore and care for the chapel. Side note to citizens not involved in the wedding ceremony, please take couple pictures somewhere else when you obviously see a photographer trying to get photos of the bride and her party! I had shots be completely ruined or have to be heavily edited due to activity from unknown parties taking their own random photos in the background of the chapel. We had the chapel reserved at this time, and it really did stress out the bride as well. I did my best to avoid them, but still, common courtesy says this is a once in a lifetime event and please be respectful of that! read more

First off, the chapel is beautiful. We didn't need to do anything decor wise. Service wise, Sandy and Miguel, were assigned to us as our helpers on our wedding day. They were both so kind and sweet. They greeted us and helped us out with so much. We really enjoyed them! Jen is also amazing! She is very available, ready to help, and easy to reach -- which isn't something you find often. We had our vow renewal ceremony at St. Peter's Chapel on 05/25/24. It was perfect. Gorgeous venue with so many stain glass windows. There are also multiple rooms for getting ready/changing. St. Peter's Chapel is an underrated gem on Mare Island. It's in an odd part of the island, surrounded by dystopian looking abandoned structures, construction, and a residential neighborhood. Surrounded by eucalyptus&redwood, the church is a refuge. If you are interested in a tour, go to the Mare Island Museum- it's a deal, only $5. Joyce, who is in charge, is. very helpful&friendly, tho sometimes the information isn't all that clear. St. Peter's is the oldest Navy chapel in the US- despite the fact the Navy has been based in Annapolis (Maryland) for ages. It also has the largest collection of Tiffany stained glass windows west of the Mississippi&Rockies. On a cloudy day, the windows are Ok, you can see their artistry, but the sunlight illuminates them. Its redwood exterior is crumbling&slightly decrepit. Pros- Helpful docents. Relatively easy to find. Follow the signs at the roundabout. Surprisingly ample parking (albeit in an area that looks like it's part of a dystopian, possibly zombie, franchise) Cons- The "information" on its openness is slightly confusing. Contact the Mare Island Museum ahead of time. The exterior could use some serious work. A hidden jewel of Tiffany glass windows- of all places- in Vallejo. Who knew? read more

I went on a tour of Mare Island 2/26/06 and I got to go inside St. Peter's Chapel in Mare Island. It's really nice. It is the oldest chapel in the Pacific and the first interdenominated chapel in the service. Originally dedicated on Oct 13, 1901, the shingle style chapel was designed by Albert Sutton. Absolute beautiful location for a wedding! I have to give this place a lot more credit because it's located on a former naval base, and coming from a family of military servicemen, this chapel speaks wonders of and dedication to the ones who have came here to marry and pray while in service. It's an absolutely small and beautiful venue, maintaining it's vintage structure. Getting to this location is a little tricky if you are not familiar with the northern California area of Vallejo, but it seems that even if you were just a bit loss it's probably because you were distracted by the ocean, the bridge, the white mansions on "soldier row", or the cemetery. Maybe even be distracted by the old couple who held hands as they walked, one in his uniform and the other in her classy 1920's dress. But once you arrive, this small, beautiful, chapel is amazing from the outside in. read more

Wow! What a cool vintage setting for a wedding! I photographed a wedding here, this summer, and found it to be a very memorable and unique setting. It was a little hot inside, as there is no AC, but I think the weather we had was much hotter than usual for vellejo. The dark natural wood interior, red carpet, and amazing stained glass windows, designed by the famed Louis Tiffany, make for a beautiful setting for a wedding. Was passing thru on the way back from a funeral of a long-time friend and decided to stop in for a few moments. This was the first chapel I remember attending services in as a kid. The place is steeped in Naval history, being constructed in 1900-1901 by sailors stationed on the base. Most of the structure is what one would expect from a chapel built from decommissioned ships of the line, meaning some of the beams are almost 150 years old. While the Tiffany stained glass windows get a lot of attention, the place has dozens of memorials to the ships, submarines and men that protected this country for over 150 years. read more

I got married here two weeks ago and I can not say enough about the chapel and the warmth of the interior or the about the beauty of the exterior. I can tell you that the chapel was closed until 2 days before my wedding while it was re-roofed. I can also tell you the venue and booking is coordinated by volunteers. They don't do wedding coordination as a job and if you take the time to get to know them and listen to them about the history of the chapel and the island you find out they are some of the sweetest people you will ever meet. One of the oldest navy chapels in the country checked out this chapel when I was looking for a place to get married a couple of years ago. It's dark inside and out, colored like a rich chocolate bar for the most part but the startling jewel like Tiffany windows really make this dim little chapel awe inspiring. It can seat about 100 people, and it has a lot of the nautical information and history of the island. It's not terribly expensive to rent if you're looking for place to get married or have a small event. The 25 astonishing Tiffany windows, designed in the early 1900s make up for the trimness of this delicate small church. Built in 1901 the style and history of this church make it very attractive and a wonderful place to visit. Because of the age of the church it was kind of musty when we visited but I'm sure it will be fine if properly aired out. read more

I got married here and I can't think of a more beautiful place to have held the ceremony. Everyone remarked on the gorgeous stained glass and just the feel of the chapel. The only issues we ran into were with communication. One of the docents we talked to most frequently was very terse and seemed angry with any questions we asked. Luckily she wasn't the one who helped with the actual wedding. They also deposited the security deposit with the final payment, and I had understood that it would only be deposited if something happened. Instead they deposit it and cut you a check later. Communication wasn't that great and there were several people I was told to talk to whenever I had a question. However, overall, I wouldn't want to get married anywhere else. There's a gazebo nearby and all the old buildings make for some great pictures! read more

We called to make an appointment to view this chapel for a wedding. Next. Year. We were told -- very rudely -- that they are not able to take reservations at this time and are very booked. Period. Asking for additional information -- like, hey, should we call back in a few weeks or not bother? -- was met with additional rudeness. It's a lovely location and we were excited to look inside. Visited this chapel because of the Tiffany stained glass windows designed by Lewis Comfort Tiffany, a renowed designer and son of Charles Tiffany who founded the famous Tiffany & Co. in New York. There are 29 stained glass windows but only 25 are designed by Tiffany. They are beautiful to view. One of the Mare Island Museum volunteers took us on a tour, only $5.00 per person. Best tour especially since it was only my husband and myself. The volunteer was very knowledgeable about the history of this military chapel and the stained glass windows. You can only get into St. Peter's Chapel by making reservations. Highly recommend visiting this special place. read more

My husband and I were looking for the perfect church to hold our wedding but had a lot of constraints with time as we had already booked the reception site and needed to have the ceremony on a Sunday (which is often difficult to do in any regular church). In comes the idea for St. Peter's Chapel...It's an official chapel (sacred space), so people from any Christian denomination can be married there (including Catholics) as long as you bring your own priest (BYOP). It's right in our hometown, not to mention totally affordable. We loved the historical significance of the building as well and the architecture and stained glass added a magical feel to our special day. The downsides: the process of securing the building for your date is a bit archaic, everything is done by snail mail and not many people answer the phones on a regular basis to field any questions. Also, because of the military history (I'm assuming) they are STICKLERS when it comes to time. You have exactly 60 minutes to complete your rehearsal and if you are not done, you are literally thrown out of the building. The same is true for the ceremony, so be smart if you know you tend to dilly dally and pay for the extra time (it's $100 for one more hour)--you'll appreciate the piece of mind in the end and not being rushed to get through these very important things! read more

I married my husband at St. Peter's Chapel in 1985 and we could'nt have made a better choice as it is a beatiful, quaint, charming and scenic chapel. I had been baptized there as a baby in 1957 and my grandfather retired from the Navy on Mare Island as well as my husband's father.
