Bruce and Sue were extremely accommodating. In fact, Bruce let me usurp his garage spot to charge my electric car (they refused to take money for the electricity usage). Sue's breakfasts were also top notch. Lastly, the grounds and proximity to river views were exceptional. I rated this 5 stars not because it is perfect (the décor was dated and the toilets and showers were small) but because it fully met my expectations given the price (only $130/night for the large Captain's room and high-quality breakfast for 2) and the age of the building (the house is over 100 years-old). I'd happily pay 20% more if they opted to refresh the décor (e.g., wallpaper, improved baths). We will return either way

With limited lodging options in the beautiful Shawnee National Forest, this was a hidden gem. We truly enjoyed the company of the owner and other guests as we relaxed on the porch. Breakfast was a wonderful treat thanks to Sue's culinary skills. Our only complaint was the bed in our room (the Quilt Room) was very worn out. We were told it was about to be replaced--definitely needed! It sound like other rooms were more updated on beds. We loved the house and owners and would love to return.

So glad we finally did. We stayed in the White Oak Treehouse and it was solid. Such a cool experience being up in the trees but still completely comfortable. Clean, cozy, and everything worked the way it should. Peaceful without feeling rough or overly rustic. We made use of the fire pit and the grill, which really added to the stay. Sitting outside near the treehouse in the evening, surrounded by trees, felt incredibly private. Honestly, I think the White Oak is probably the most private rental on the property. It's in the middle of so many great trails. Garden of the Gods, Rim Rock, and Pounds Hollow are all close by. Just a note......Pounds Hollow is only accessible to foot traffic from December through mid-March. We spotted a bald eagle, heard coyotes at night, and I got to sit on the porch with coffee listening to a rooster crow somewhere in the distance (no roosters on site, which made it even funnier). The staff are great and very responsive. From booking to check-in, it's been a really pleasant experience. I received a gift card for my birthday...just a heads up, if you're using a gift card you'll need to call the office to make your reservation so they can apply it. Otherwise, you can book directly on their website. The outpost where you check in has tons of resources for hiking and trails, plus a lot of other helpful amenities. There were also a couple of sweet surprise kitty visitors during our stay, which just added to the charm. This has been a really great stay. Would absolutely come back.

I have a very revealing experience to share. I am the owners only niece and i am seven years…read moreescaped from this cult of a family. And I have several things to share about this "establishment". First of all, believe every single low review. The majority of the five star reviews have been written by people that I personally recognize as family members or family friends. I can attest to the state of the "mansion". It has always been run down, dirty, and full of roaches. And if you think the rooms are bad, the private quarters are worse. The bugs, the dirt, the clutter, the old plumbing and electric. And finally, I'd like to call out every lie that I've seen from the owners in their replies. First of all, "world class wine shop"? I love my red wine and theirs was barely worth a sniff, let alone a taste (and that's if anyone but Tony drinks it all). If you want a good midwest wine, try Purple Toad. Secondly the roaches (and Tony, you've been hearing this since I was 10 and complained about it to the both of you), roaches are not something to expect just because "it's Illinois" I have lived in various places in Illinois for 17 years of my 23. Bugs are quite easy to manage. Third, the house was not used as a hotel for a century. It was an abandoned house and that's why they could afford to purchase it. Finally, I've had their coffee after being woken up at the crack of dawn to babysit their four children for free. It's shit. Onto the second reply from Beth (Beth I had higher hopes for the woman who took pity on me during my fathers neglect and bought me new clothes but I guess you conformed to the Eckert ways and I pity you and your children's souls). First of all, y'all are a half hour from the Shawnee national forest, which is more towards the western side of Southern Illinois, whereas you are located on the eastern border; and this excuse doesn't even hold water! Cockroaches, which are what your victims are complaining about, prefer to live deep in cities, which is why they are more common among inner city residences. Secondly, "extensive renovations and upgrades"? You literally had to! No one, not even you and your family, wanted to stay in it in the original state. It had no modern elements. And I can recall on several occasions where you and Tony talked about how to do the absolute bare minimum to get the place running so you could start extorting people for the "historic experience". And yes people, this is their home... and actually examine this. If they are willing to show you roaches in your rooms, imagine what it's like behind the scenes. Dirty dishes everywhere, the kids rooms smelled like pee, and roaches sitting with you on the couch. It is absolutely false advertising because you are not disclosing that you have a "historic" bug problem, you do not advertise what people will actually experience while here! And the walls are most certainly paper thin. I could hear anyone move in the house at night. So clearly that I could tell who was moving and what they were doing. Third, if the room isn't ready for someone, why would you let them check in? Because it's just an excuse. Additionally, "complimentary bottled water"? It is a crime to not allow access to water for customers, and for the luxury price people are paying, I'd expect luxury water to go with it. And considering, from my understanding, you have never given dissatisfied people a refund, I'd hope they drank the complementary wine as well. People traveling deserve to have a reliable place to stay, where they don't have to "roll with the punches". And lastly Beth, there's a significant difference between eclectic and just rundown and gross. If you want to know exactly who these people are, I'll tell you. The Eckert clade is a cult, simply put. The founder, my paternal grandfather, is a pedophile. I experienced this since I was 3. Everyone knew and did nothing. I was physically, psychologically, and sexually abused by my father as well until I left when I was 17. They brainwash the women into going along with everything they do, luckily four of us escaped. Maybe I should add on how there's a significant chance that my eldest cousin is actually my half-brother, since my father and uncle were doing the same woman at the same time. I bet my younger cousins were fed many lies about why I left, but the truth is plain and simple, I left because of the abuses I suffered in this family. Thank you for listening, and if I can leave you listeners with a parting message let it be this: This family does not deserve your money, your patronage, or your time.

The tv was a nice size plus sofabed. I really like the desk and chair area too. There's tons of restaurants nearby. There is a pool, but for some reason, it felt like a sauna in there. It was already hot outside, I didn't want to be in a warm indoor pool. The only reason why I'm giving a rating of 3 stars is because of two complaints. The walls were too damn thin. We could hear the people next to us very clearly! Thankfully there wasn't anything intimate going on, but there was a party happening, and it was just too loud - not the music, it was the voices! We were in room 223, so thankfully we were near to the elevators. We didn't even hear when people were out by the elevators, but I could clearly hear the guests next to us. Secondly, the bathroom includes bath/shower products plus hand soap and lotion, which is a plus, because that's provided less thing to pack. However, the toilet was too low! My 70-year old mother and I are both 5'4. She recently had knee and hip surgery, so she decided to squat over the toilet. I sat but hurt my knees using the toilet. Thankfully, my husband didn't come. He's 6'4, he would have had a very hard time. They need to install bars next to the toilet. Also the tub floor was slippery - again, mother with recent hip and knee surgery... that was not good!

I will recommend everyone try this place for something different, but be warned the hotel itself is a little worn. Squeaky old floors & stairs and very cluttered decor in our room. Nice eliptical & floor mat in the exercise room. Very nice king bed suite. Comfortable pillows and linens. The room was like a studio apartment with a kitchenette & table/chairs. They had a nice breakfast, pancakes, eggs, sauage, biscuts and gravy, plus pastries, cereal, juice and coffee. They also have a popcorn machine in the lobby. If you like the charm and the laid back social vibe that's needed to "Hideaway" then this is what you're looking for. The noise or the weird noisy nonsense that's a part of a larger motel, that's not a thing here. There are social spaces and larger rooms on the opposite side of the rentals that are there if you need to have it, but they're largely quiet and they're perfect if you're in the area to visit your family here or bring a small group to have the extra room to talk about things. As for the rooms, they're practically spotless. They are also large and very clean, because the owner makes it a point for them to be that way. And honestly, from my own travel experiences you'd probably be paying more for that than you would elsewhere - they'd charge a premium for these, but the prices here are lower than what you'd get for the same thing elsewhere. The rooms include a refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot, and a good WiFi connection. There is no extra cost for those, and they're the type of things I worry about when I feel like I'm away from home. Besides that, there's a bar here with a friendly atmosphere. You'll see a mix of both guests that stop by to rent rooms, and locals that come in to relax after a long day's worth of work.

This would be one of those moments where you don't judge a book by the cover. We were greeted very well by the owner who was super accommodating. We got checked in and were shown to our room. This lodging facility appears to have been a military style or medical style housing facility. They did a great job converting to a single or double occupancy facility. The room was very large and spacious. Present in our room was what appeared to be a California King size bed. The mattress was a little more firm then we were used to but not uncomfortable and slept well. The room was broken up with the shower on one side and the lavatory on the other. Amenities were simple and personable. The bar on site is fully stocked to your pleasure. Food wise your choices are limited in the hotel but the restaurant across the street can fill the void. I appreciate the the friendly conversation and accommodations provided. It will certainly warrant a return visit if and when we are in the area again.
