Making everyone happy isn't an easy thing to do but I think their Beer Club mailing list is the most diplomatic way of making sure everyone has an equal chance at getting great beer. Not everything is crazy tough to get but I do like that they try to distribute it to everyone. Prices are reasonable & there's a decent craftbeer selection. It's especially helpful to pop into Grand Spirits for a cold one since Chester's next door is BYOB!

Intrigued, I dug further and found out they are local in New London, and offer free beer and wine tastings every Friday night! Excited, I put it on our calendars, and counted down the days. Located in the heart of downtown new london, walking distance from the amtrak station and the city center, Thames is the only craft liquor store for many miles. Parking on the street has never been a problem for me, but may become so if their popularity increases. The store itself is well organized, with an entry area with a deli feel, stocked with craft cheeses and meats. This area is also where they taste their beers, and provide wonderful food pairings. Behind the food area is a boutique area with a case of chocolates and gifts surrounding it, along with cigars and a cold case of rosés. Alongside this area is another long room with the spirits, beers and wines. This is where the wine tasting is located, and features vintages from all over the world. I have been very pleased with the suggestions from staff on our purchases, and have yet to leave with a bottle of something that I dislike. They do have some amazing items we return for repeatedly, like the Tonic syrup to make custom gin and tonics, and many not-to-miss California reds. Downsides are price, which seems high comparatively across the board, and sometimes selection, which rotates constantly. If you're trying for something specific, they may be out and offer something similar which I think is fun but may be annoying to some.

I walked to the back of the store to get a case of Angry Orchard and when I got to the register, the cashier, Susan rudely asked me if I was with a gentleman that she just had refused service to. I didn't enter the store with him, I didn't have any interaction with him and I didn't know him. But Susan rudely said to me " Are you with him because if you are I'm not serving you". I was taken off guard because what would give her the idea to ask me that but beside s the color of my skin. He was a black man and l'm a black woman, so in her mind I was with him. It wasn't so much the question that bothered me, it was her tone toward me and the fact that she profiled me. She was nasty and I took that question as her being a bit racist. She did not ask the white male or white female that walk in before me were they with the black gentleman she refused service, but she asked me. It's 2025 and people are still practicing their racist believes. If you are going to be in a customer position you should treat all people with dignity and respect. I will not be returning to that store ever again.

We wandered right up to the fridge to see the wines they already had chilled. After just a few seconds of staring up at the fridge with big wide eyes, a very helpful employee walked up and offered to help us. For the next few minutes, she described so many wines well that we wanted them all - but ultimately chose two that would fit in our wine bag. They also had bags of ice (which we needed for our wine bag) and a full liquor store selection (my husband picked up a bottle of bourbon after finding one that he couldn't live without). Our wines were wonderful (one kinda funky orange and one great pet nat), and the service was great as well. A wonderful shop for wine and other booze in Mystic!
