We ordered mulch and topsoil from Grass Roots and were entirely satisfied with the mulch. Unfortunately, the "top soil" was actually clay. I have worked in soil science for 15 years and know the difference. After a call to the company, the girl we spoke to gave us no satisfaction and stated it was wet but no admission that it wasn't up to par. DON'T order any top soil, it is junk!! read more

This was a difficult review to make because Grass Roots had a few positive things to note (which I will do), but there's a dark side as well that must be told. The work to be done was a full-scale seeding of the property. This included doing a final grade which was done very well. Some topsoil was also applied but in small quantities, probably not sufficient due to the predominately clay soil throughout much of the property. Seed was then applied as well as a topcoat of mulch. I wasn't familiar with that approach but was assured this process was typical. Unfortunately, the day AFTER the seeding and mulch, a major windstorm hit the area and the mulch and seed were significantly dispersed over most of the property. I will be the first to admit that Grass Roots had no control over mother nature and I don't fault them for that. What they could have done however, was to spray the area with water the day the seed was applied which would have helped to minimize the damage. We attempted to do so in the midst of the windstorm but with minimal success. The result was pretty dismal. Even after much watering in the following weeks, the result was clusters of grass here and there and LOTS of weeds. I made numerous attempts to contact the Grass Roots representative to ask for advice (I wasn't demanding any additional services or remediation) but received only one email in response saying they would try to come by. Numerous email and phone calls went unanswered. As I said, some positives, but I'm not sure this company was using best practices in their process, and their customer service was most certainly in need of attention. I waited for my appointment with Mike to look at landscaping my yard but he was a no show, no call, no text, no email. Weather wasn't conducive but I still feel it important to contact a potential client if you can't be there. While they may do an exemplary job landscaping, I didn't get the chance to find out. Although previous reviews commented unfavorably about communication issues, I wanted to support a small local business so I ignored them. I've never worked with a landscaping company, although I've gardened for years. I'm older, and can't do as much of the heavier labor, such as roto-tilling. Communication was an issue, unfortunately. I had to ask repeatedly to find out when the work would start. There seemed to be issues with finding heritage raspberries, although initially I was assured that these type of berries were handled by them every year. I wasn't told anything about the plants I would be receiving, and didn't realize I should have asked about size and maturity. I wanted heritage raspberry bushes. I don't know if that's what I actually got. They were a twig each with one leaflet and no identifying tag. They are guaranteed for a year, so I'm hopeful they will be sturdy and grow well and that my uncertainty about the plants is unfounded. The workers didn't know they were supposed to create an edge and didn't have the proper tool, so they did it by hand. It was not an especially clean border and my husband had to go back through and re-dig and weed. They put the plants in, but didn't water. I asked why not. They shrugged. I dragged the hose over for watering and they helped. I'd never heard of planting and fertilizing but not watering, so this made me wonder if they had even included fertilizer. Later I emailed Chris, my primary contact, and he said the plants had been fertilized and that most customers preferred to do their own watering. He said the plants were little because they had just been dug up as starts. Perhaps some of the communication lapses were because I didn't know what to ask or expect, but I didn't find Chris especially forthcoming. I paid my bill, but I would not use this company again. read more

I made an appointment to have them come to my home and give me an estimate on what I wanted to do the guy (I believe the owner) told me to give him a week and he'll have my estimate ready. One week went by so I called and the lady who picked up got my name and number and told me they would call me back. It's been another week and i still have not heard from them. We started using Grass Roots a few years ago. They have done a few projects for us, as well as perform regular maintenance each month for us. They do great with all of the work, the workers are friendly and extremely courteous, and they always have good ideas for our property. I had those nasty bag worms building nests in my three weeping cherry trees. I spoke with Mike, and he stopped by and removed them for me. We had an exceptionally rainy May, and we're not able to treat the trees chemically. Mike offered advice on treatment and supplement care for the trees for next Spring. I have three small hardscape projects on my agenda, and hope to utilize Grass Roots for them! read more

I recently had a clean up done at my house. This included, Pruining, Weeding, Bed Clean Up and etc. There was a Crew of three men who came to do the service each had very different personalties. I believe The bosses name was Donald, I felt he was very little involved and every time i looked out my window he was laying on the ground or on the phone. There was brandon who seemed like the man who was the most involved he did al the pruning and the most talking (Great person-Great Worker) Then there was mike hard worker very quiet stayed to himself and by brandon. I love the work they did I just hate I paid for 3 workers and only two actually worked. I would hire them again but request only the two come. There rates are very affordable and have all the needed equipment. The owner mike is also very helpful and knowledgeable of plants. If you are looking for trimming or mulching on a budget this is the company. -I also have been using this company for years read more
