Going to the Great Swamp Greenhouses is truly one of the most beautiful and welcoming experiences during ANY time of year. I have been to the Swamp every season and every one of them is stunning. Spring: Wow! The varieties of shrubs, annuals, and perennials are endless. Inside of the greenhouse is flooded with new blooms from the annuals. It's a beautiful time to be outside and shop with one of the friendly staff members who are more than willing to answer any and all of my questions. Summer: all of the summer blooms are out! This is less busy than springtime and you might have more time with an associate. There are many veggies to choose from too. There's usually a sale at the end of summer on shrubs and other things. Fall: SO MANY PUMPKINS! And fun fall foliage. Did I forget to mention the mums? The mums are endless, great quality, and cheaper than anywhere near. Winter: this is WHERE to get your Christmas tree. But come in the morning if you can, it's much less busy. It's a Christmas wonderland. The amount of poinsettias alone will make you come here. Along with every single thing you could need to decorate for Christmas. There are bays dedicated to houseplants and succulents. I am such a fan of this place. Wow! In all my life, I have never seen such an assortment of colorful poinsettias! It was incredible - each color, each variation was absolutely beautiful! It was crowded (I mean really, really packed), but they are so well organized that we got in and out of there quickly. On our way out, however, the line of cars coming in was backed up through the driveway and onto the road! They were selling more trees than I ever thought any single store could sell. Come early, bring hot chocolate, and take it all in stride. read more

I have rarely in my life felt the need to write a negative review for a business. We are new to the area and have shopped at Great Swamp multiple times since our move, spending a fair amount of money with the business. We recently had a large $1k+ order delivered, which included a tree that the owner supposedly hand picked himself. The tree arrived sparse, brown patches, looking half dead. We called to discuss the issue and the owner says that it's really on us since we didn't select this one tree ourselves. We were shocked that the owner would select + send a tree that looks half dead in the first place, let alone then put the blame on the customer for his dead plant + poor customer service. The dead tree was one thing, but the unhelpful and disrespectful customer service was the worst part. We did also personally select a beautiful large rhodedendrum that was picture perfect on location and when delivered was wilting and brown. They have lost us as customers and we will open encourage anyone we know to go elsewhere, a huge disappointment. read more

We purchased a 7' tall Maple tree from this nursery for $400. The tree had been planted in the ground at the nursery for 2 years. They dug it up for delivery to us. In less than 1 year the tree died. When we removed the dead tree we found that Great Swamp Greenhouses had SEVERED ALL MAJOR ROOTS CLOSE TO THE TRUNK when they dug the tree up to sell to us. They sold us a $400 seven foot tall tree with NO ROOT SYSTEM at all! Their refund policy is very poor....we received a 50% STORE CREDIT ($200) to use to buy another tree from them that had to cost $400 or more. This store credit is useless! We will NEVER buy another tree from Great Swamp Greenhouses again! read more

They have an enormous collection with a ton of variety and the greenhouse is well organized so you can find what you're looking for by amount of sunlight required. There is a lovely selection of product, however the information that is entered into their computer system is not kept. I bought 2 identical shrubs in the spring, and one is not doing well. They only offer a 50% replacement cost up to a year later, but you need to keep your receipt as their computer system does not have any history of purchases, like their competitors do. Their competitors offer 100% replacement up to a year and have my purchase history in their system, making the shopping experience and customer service exceptional in comparison. I doubt that I will come back to Great Swamp Greenhouses because of their lack of customer service to the every day shopper. Perhaps they treat the landscapers and large customers better. read more

Atrocious customer service - consistently. I'd give it a pass once or twice, I get it's hot and you're probably underpaid, but there's no need for this kind of treatment of customers. No less repeated customers over the years. I'm done with you guys, I'd rather drive the extra miles elsewhere. I'm getting dead plants that are most definitely not my fault when other plants of the same species are doing JUST fine, nasty replies to simple and polite questions, and it's like pulling teeth trying to get anyone to help whenever I go these days. There's a staggering selection here of great stuff for you to take home and plant in your yard: flowering annuals and perennials, herbs, vegetables, ground cover, shrubs, ornamental trees, pine trees and hardwood trees. The Great Swamp has all the usual garden supplies like mulch, dirt, pots and tools; bulk mulch too, but no statuary or sculptures. They'll deliver their stuff within a set radius and the charge depends on the item, they told me it starts at about $35. The Great Swamp Greenhouses are enormous, acres, and you can walk thru most of them. Their outdoor yard goes on and on, I don't know how many acres. I think it just may be the largest one in Morris county. This is one of the very few nurseries in the area with a large mulch yard offering pine, oak, maple, ash, locust and other hard-wood trees in various sizes, from small ones merely 10 feet tall up to real specimen trees. Choo$e your $ize carefully! Big ones can be delivered for $100 extra. Trees and shrubs come with a one-year warranty, which I think is pretty unusual. Basically if the plant dies within a year, dig it up and bring it in to get 50% of the original cost credited towards a replacement. Gardening is a luxury, right? Prices can be very high here, but they do have occasional sales, like 20% off during father's day weekend. I noticed that the cheap long island top soil bag that's $2 elsewhere is $3 here, hmm. Some things I've only found here, like pots of the big scary invasive bamboo, so when GSG is the only nursery that has it, ya take it or ya leave it. Getting help is hit or miss. They can get crazy busy even tho many people are in the yard to help you and to load your car. Everyone I met here spoke English which hasn't, ahem, been my experience at other nurseries. Tip: ask for Tina H., a senior staffer and the shrub manager here. She is impossibly knowledgeable about all things green and has always been very patient in advising this total amateur gardener :) read more

Great selection of healthy plants with ample staff to assist you with your selection. I stopped by to by some fall plants to spiffy up the outdoor decor. I found a very decent selection of great looking annuals. I settled on beautiful yellow pansies that would survive through the frost that is about to hit the area...after the current heat wave. I arrived early on Sunday morning and had a very nice young gentleman assist me and hand me a slip for payment. Can't wait to return in the spring to check out more plants. read more

We had been driving past this nursery for years. One day my husband needed a few bushes for the side of the yard and went to this nursery. After choosing 4 bushes he said, "this is my new place." Well, after about 8 weeks, 2 of the 4 bushes were dead. We took them back and got 50% off the replacements. A couple weeks later the 3rd of the original 4 was dead. A couple weeks later, the 2 replacements were dead. So, to summarize, 5 of 6 bushes are dead. Now, I know what you are thinking, maybe they aren't getting enough, light or water. Well, we have 10 replica bushes from another local nursery that are doing great and we do the same watering for these. Unfortunately, this is not going to be our new place. read more

I'll start with the good stuff. The selection is insane, the plants seem incredibly healthy compared to what I've seen elsewhere (Agway, for example), and everything I bought - a bunch of impatiens and begonias - has thrived beyond what I'd expected. I also feel like I got a pretty good deal since i stumbled into some kind of sale that was at least 30% off IIRC. That said, I know just about nothing about gardening. The place was not staffed enough with people to answer questions, so I had to basically google to see which plants would work in shade/partial sun. It's a shame, with more help, I would have bought more stuff, but I simply don't know enough about what would work or not in my location. As others have noted, things are a bit pricey, but it seems like you can save if you keep an eye on when they have sales. What brings this 4-star to 3 was my experience on leaving the place. I'd paid, and was wheeling my cart to my car and passed a young teenage employee. I asked if they were open Sundays and he sighed and said "yes". I then asked what the hours were and got a very, for lack of a better word, "dickish" response that "we are open EVERY day from 8 to 5", as if sharing this information with a customer was the most loathsome thing he had to do that day. Seriously unprofessional - I'm basically asking when I can come back and spend more money and I get the equivalent of "f-off". read more

We bought our Christmas tree at Great Swamp for 10+ years and always thought $85 Is a lot. However most of the times they were worth it. So we went there again to buy our tree for this year and we're stunned by the price increase. The same tree which was between $80 and $85 is now $125. Instead of making trees cheaper for families in these difficult times they increase the price by 50%. This is a joke and we will never come back. Usually we spent for the tree and all poinsettias around $350. This year we spent $0. We will never come back and also will buy our plants somewhere different. Merry Christmas read more

I've passed this place numerous times and finally had the opportunity to go check it out. The intent was to ask about plants we wanted to replace and find other ones we could swap out. I was blown away by the size of the property and the variety they carried. We spoke with a gentleman who suggested a few things and really knew his stuff. We now know what our options are when its time to work on the landscaping. I wandered into the ginormous greenhouse and was in awe with the variety. At the very end I found the herbs and veggie plants. Herbs were also found outside in the very front of the building. I walked away with a small selection of herbs and veggie plants. I also walked away with a better understanding of what we could pick up in the future. Just about everyone was pleasant and helpful. I am definitely coming back! read more

Excellent selection of shrubs, trees, annuals, perennials , herbs, veggies etc. place is huge, and really pleasant to walk around, especially outside. The greenhouse can get a little chaotic / frustrating during peak season days - aisles are fairly narrow, and the carts sometimes clog ur path. I've had great success w all the trees & shrubs I've purchased there. They help u pick out the best plant for the spot ur trying to fill -- bring a pic on ur phone, and pay attn to the amount of sunshine / shade it gets throughout the day . They'll give you tips on how to best plant the plant as well. I gotta stress the great selection they have - especially trees, shrubs, and perennials . Much more extensive than other garden centers , especially big box places like Home Depot & Lowes . I went to Home Depot a couple of years ago to save money , and honestly , the plants really haven't thrived . The shrubs are ok, but the perennials haven't bloomed since their first season -- lame . I am always impressed by the sheer variety of plant offerings at the GSG. They often have varieties of plants other nurseries don't have and some you've probably never even seen before. Their prices are competitive and I love all the home and garden decor they offer in their shop. The only fault I have is that it can be hard to find staff inside of the greenhouse which can lead to confusion if you don't realize their price system is based on what pot the plant is in. A great spot to go to that is set in a beautiful patch of land and definitely worth a visit! read more

This place has the most amazing selection of trees and shrubs, and season-appropriate flowers. The prices are reasonable for the quality and they guarantee their trees and shrubs. More importantly, they spent a ton of time with me to walk me through the grounds (twice!) to help me choose the right plants for the space I was trying to fill, even though I could tell they were busy.
