They have tour guides there that will take you on a quick tour of the house and tell you everything about it! It's unique and interesting to see how houses were built long ago. The grounds are super pretty as well! After a tour of the oldest house, There is a marsh land public park across the street called Lilly Pond Park. We walked over there and took a stroll on the board walk which was beautiful! We saw rabbits and lots of birds!

It was nice that it wasn't crowded, and the walking path is easy to traverse. There's a fenced area over by the bluffs that has nice views of the beach and ocean. There's signage indicating some facts and history. You can't go inside the lighthouse, as expected, but you can't walk right up to the front door, which is kinda neat. Expect to spend about 30 minutes here, mostly with a smooth drive. AT&T cell service is limited so screenshot and directions in case you're out of range of internet coverage!

You are up high, and there is a downward view of the Sankaty Head Golf Club which borders the station. A nice view and of Nantucket - just beautiful. If you look north, you can make out Great Point Light too if there is no fog or haze. This location is a great for amateur radio too; with a hand-held walkie, you can easily reach the Dennis and Barnstable 2 meter/VHF repeaters. The Nantucket Amateur Radio Association holds their International Lighthouse Lightship weekend special event station at this location. There is a couple of benches, foot traffic, bicycles, and cars; this is a heavily visited site. Parking area for cars. The area has fencing around it. Watch for ticks! Bring a chair if able. Enjoy the views!

There's a lot of interesting and good information, and I liked the people. But.... The first half of the tour is in an old mini bus. The bus has tiny windows, like 4" square, and no air circulation. No fans. No air conditioning. Today was nearly 90 out by 10 am, when our tour started, and temperatures inside the bus got so hot that stepping out felt cool! You don't travel far, and then they stop for 10 minutes to talk about what's out the window. It's brutal. Ironically, the travel distances are so slim most people could walk it. But, just sitting on the bus in the heat? Yuck. The second half is in an old shed where you learn about harvesting. Again, it could be interesting, but it's a good 10° hotter, even with the fans going, and it makes it hard to focus. Or even listen. Better weather would have helped. But, we had an old lady in our tour group nearly pass out, and the guide indicated that that was not uncommon. Heck, complimentary water would be nice. Waters are a dollar. The tour is fifteen. It's all cash only.

There…read moreare a lot of wonderful things to do with your time on the island, and the exhibits re: scrimshaw, basketmaking, and historical chairs and china are probably not a huge draw for those without a pre-existing interest. But.... if you are a regular on the island, I do strongly recommend a visit to this Greek revival home-turned-museum commissioned by William Hadwen, one of the owners of the candle and whale oil company that now houses the Whaling Museum. And in particular, you must go when Anne is serving as the docent on premises. This retired Nantucket High School English teacher is worth her weight in gold, a true fountain of knowledge and enthusiasm when it comes to Nantucket history! You can glean some interesting information by reading the exhibit plaques; you can glean so very much more by chatting with Anne: Stories about the Hadwen and Starbuck family, how the family reconciled great wealth with their Quaker values, how the Great Fire of 1946 somehow spared the house, how the house changed over time as whaling became less important to the town and smells from the harbor became less pungent. The Hadwen House is included on tickets to the Whaling Museum and worth an hour or two of your time if Anne is there to breathe life into its history!

Their garden is beautiful with climbing roses. They were under construction at the main entrance but access to the building is in the side and back. The staff were friendly and informative. You learn a lot about basket making and see some interesting artifacts. There's even an on-site basket weaver to give demos and a tutorial. Worth stopping by for about 30-45 minutes.

The museum takes you through the history of the whaling industry on Nantucket with historical artifacts and documents from this time. The museum also has a full sperm whale skeleton on display. I was truly in awe by the items we saw on the display. It was educational and I feel I learned a lot. The museum is two floors worth of exhibits and a rooftop deck where you can look out onto the surrounding island. The museum also offered lectures, discussions, and documentaries you could engage with throughout the day. When we arrived they had a schedule displayed for the days events. I felt this was worth the cost of admission and was a must see stop on our trip to Nantucket.

Whaling Museum was definitely something fun to do for an hour while on the island! All the exhibits are very well put together and everything is very nicely up-kept. There was also a live presentation on the island's history which we watched and that was super informative and interactive.
