Are you visiting British Columbia and looking for a little different adventure for you and the kids? If so, I'd recommend a visit to the Greater Vancouver Zoo. Located less than an hour outside of downtown, it is home to 140 different animal species featured throughout its meandering 120 acres. Children under the age of 3 are admitted free of charge and a visit typically takes 2-3 hours. While your little ones will probably enjoy roaming the grounds on foot, you can also rent a Safari Cycle or Critter Cruiser and unlike every zoo that I've ever visited, you are also welcome to use your bicycle, scooter, rollerblades, skateboard, or wagon while exploring their nearly 2 miles of paved walkways. These are some of the largest animal enclosures that I've ever seen at a zoo and they provide you closer access to the animals than you might expect. If you anticipate that your little ones will be WAY into this adventure, and ask you animal related questions above the standard parental pay grade, well then you're in luck because guided walking and mini-bus tours are available. In addition, if the herd you are traveling with is in need of a short break from all of these animal encounters you can enjoy the picnic area, playground, and restaurant. Visited the Vancouver Zoo in Abbotsford during the summer, it was super fun! The zoo has so many cool animals - hippos, red pandas, wolfs, lemur, and many more!! It is also pretty big! The zoo also has a train that takes you around the entire zoo, however, it is very hard to spot animals while in the train. We paid $8/pp for the train. I would saying best way to spot the animals is walking. Since we went on a hot day, it got very tiring to walk the entire zoo and gave us half way. I wish they had water fountains in the zoo because it is so big and there is only one water fountain by the entrance which makes it hard to come back all the time to fill it up. They did have porta potties around the zoo though. They also had a light bites and souvenirs at the entrance. Would probably visit again during a colder day so that I'm able to go around better. :) read more

We visited the Vancouver Zoo today and, sadly, had one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had -- and more than one disappointment during our visit. We rented a cart vehicle and at the end of our 1 hour we returned it thinking we were on time. We were one minute past the deadline , and the girl immediately charged us penalty. No understanding -- just an automatic extra fee. When we spoke to Manager Philip, he was completely unhelpful. He simply repeated the policy without any empathy, offered no solution, and made it clear customer satisfaction wasn't a priority. To make matters worse, the zoo train -- one of the main attractions for kids -- was out of service for maintenance with no prior notice anywhere on the zoo's website or at the entrance. It was a huge disappointment for our children, who had been looking forward to it all day. Between the inflexible and petty rental policy, unhelpful management, and closed attractions, the day left us feeling frustrated and let down. I'd recommend visitors double-check if the train is running before going and be extremely careful with rental return times -- because even one minute late will cost you, and management won't care. Left feeling ripped off and disappointed. Such a waste of $200 and plus a huge stress with the soulless manager and customer service. Never again! read more

It is dusty in the crowd because the ground is where people walk. The playground is rocky yet dusty. Transportation within the rental is lacking having to wait a few more hours. I have been to other zoos that are much better than this one. However, it is okay for what it is. I got in after paying $8 for parking. Regular price is $21 but it is buy one get one free admission if you have the entertainment coupon book. The $6 train ride was about 15 minutes and it was a nice tour around the zoo. I actually found it to be the highlight and worth the money. The person explained each animal we saw along the way. The food was alright. I spent $11 for chicken strips, fries and a drink. It was actually okay priced. They need to add soft serve cones to their menu and slush puppies should be available at both concession stands. It was a nice walk around the zoo to get the kids to burn off their energy. Also, I saw families use the exit gate to get into the zoo for free. That part was annoying as I think everyone should pay to support the zoo animals and staff. I know everyone want freebies but this is a bit much when I saw a family of 7 just walk in. I suggest staff to either block that exit off or have someone watch the exit. read more

Despite living in Vancouver all my life, I have never been to the zoo because it is not transit accessible. However I finally had the opportunity to go a couple of months ago, as well as a ride. It's definitely not the best zoo I've ever been to, but certainly not the worst (that honor goes to the Copenhagen Zoo). Like all attractions in Vancouver, at $25 for admission, it's (in my opinion) super expensive, and I certainly don't think it's worth that price. However I'm glad I was finally able to go, and I was able to get free admission since my friend works there. Even though it's a fairly small zoo and doesn't have a lot of "exotic" animals, I saw things I haven't seen before at any zoo. I saw a male lion (all the zoos I've been to only had females, if I recall), and I saw hippos walking about. I've seen hippos before, but only floating in the water. While my friend and I were watching the hippos, for unknown reasons, they decided to get out of the water, walk around a bit, and roar (or whatever it is that hippos do). That was something different for me. Another highlight was the Ankole Cattle. They are cattle from Eastern Africa and they have enormous horns, the largest horns of all cattle. Had a great time here. The place is actually quite big so I totally understand why there is bike rental service after the day my favourite exhibits are the giraffe, tiger and the lions. It was a good walk and cheap parking ticket. Im giving fair mark 2.5/5 because I wasn't totally satisfied. It seems like i paid my 28$ + 8$ ( parking ) just to see 5-7 animals and just a walk in a park. Or maybe my expectations were high. Anyway we went 3pm which i wont go there that time because the animals weren't there and were sleeping or hiding.(best time is to go earlyas possible ) :( I wasn't able to see my favourite animal ( giraffe ) Good points : big jungle more space for the animals , good area for kids and biking. read more

Bad when your School or class books a field trip make sure to double check with the zoo keepers that the train that you can ride around the zoo is booked for you because today me and my class pay for the tickets to go on the zoo train online and the zoo keepers did not even Realize it, so I'm giving a bad review on it but the zoo is pretty great and the animals were cool. read more

Great place to spend a day with the family. We usually go early in the morning when the animals are waking up.

Well, I am pissed. First of all, what in the diddlydoodler was that? Not only did they not have racoons like they used to, they won't even let you roll around with the hogs. I wore my custom made spandex suit in anticipation of my biweekly mud roll, but no, Gerald said I would be kicked out if i attempted this feat. Sighhh. No rebtiles, or snaks to speak of. I love seeing their slithery slathery bodies and was deprived and left the zoo with tears and disappointment. Too many kids with scooters. They circled around me visciously while hissing like geese and i felt threatened and unsafe. Also, peacocks just roaming around?? How is that ethical... I hate their little legs. They have taxidermied metal statues all over. Its grotesque and inhumane. Where were the MONKEYS and the baboon derrieres? Zoo?? More like, poo. Will not return, not even if they personally call me and ask me to return. I will find it hard to sleep after this experience and may need to up my therapist visits from 9 to 10 times a week. Sad. Although every enclosure had mud, I felt as though there could be more. The red panda looked at me with lust in its eyes, and i couldnt help but feel a sensuous tingle sensation. I can't adopt more than three hooved animals so stop showing me them. They did not list the prices of the animals so how are you supposed to know how to budget for this. I want more corndogs to feed the miniature horse. Also, who does the emu think he is. He has the same hair as me and only smells half as good. My wife died last year, but she looked like that furry hooved thing and it triggered me. Just STOP. read more

I found the place to be highly over rated, costly, and in poor conditions for animals as well as for the public. I have went on 3 occasions and felt the same as well as my guest from far away as Vienna, Germany. Some animals looked in distress, depressed positions with some in crammed living units. Note: * Charged for parking * Food was not all that great or fresh... very costly * Restrooms, cold water, old, smelly and dirty * Few empty cages / field space with no animals. Not impressed at all! I was not the only one who felt this as we walk around; You could actually hear people commenting the same thoughts as what I'm writing. Personally would never recommend this place to any one UNLESS they : Up grad, clean up and allow free parking to the person paying the high admittance charge. Let's get 1 thing crystal clear,I abhor everything about this facility and the whole concept of animals requiring massive ranges being contained in small settings. I do not agree with social pack animals being alone either. Both of these practises continue here and let's not forget about this Zoo's poor track record....but...I love seeing these beautiful animals up close but at what price? I feel like a hypocrite saying this but from a human perspective this place is well appointed with warm patient staff striving to deliver the best experience for all. I love the quiet area for kids with sensory issues and those Caymans!!! I love that they paved the zoo path which allows those with mobility issues great comfort.I never saw the Lion feeding presentaion but many of our students loved it! The pedal powered quad bike is brilliant but $$$. I would never ever be a patron of this particular zoo or any zoo for that matter but this is part of my job and the sole reason I attended.To sum up a great place for humans but not so much for the animals in my opinion. Two stars rating, are you kidding me!!!! This place is truly great. We live close, have an annual pass and go there to walk and get our exercise too... .... and every time, we see one of the animals do something peculiar or interesting and it makes the visit special, you never see the same thing twice. WE bring in water bottles as they have stations, so they are not ripping you off there as some have said the ticket is expensive but they are not. The park is large and lots of various animals to see. I recommend it all the time. read more

I think I'm being generous with the three stars. This zoo isn't that great. I felt like I was walking through someone's backyard. I don't know which zoo is the worst: Vancouver or Edmonton. Not very interactive at all, not engaging. You need binoculars to see most of the animals. I've been to waaaayyyy better zoos: Pittsburgh Zoo, Toronto Zoo, Busch Gardens, San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park. We took the whole family to the Zoo - including two kids. The experience was very underwhelming. It costs a lot of money but they hardly have any animals. Most of the animals were local animals. There were some animals that were from other parts of the world but they were behind large bushes. There are no viewing areas. You should go if you want to see Chickens and Parrots. Never buy a train ticket in advance... was there on a day that wasn't busy at all got there 3 min before the train time and the employee (who is sitting there reading a book) tells us my kids and I can't get on because they are already leaving? Train still there. Not 2pm yet. No where on the ticket does it say get there early. I go to guest services to get my money back and the lady who was not understanding at all and extremely rude says she won't give me my money back because I should have been there 5-10 min early? They should write that on the ticket if that's the rule. The ticket said 2pm which they circle! And clearly they don't care about their customers... like give me my $18 back and I would have definitely renewed my year pass... now I never want to go back because they gave us such a crappy experience today. And besides that horrible experience- this zoo is pretty boring and a waste of money. I would definitely skip it and go to science world, burnaby central railway, aquarium, or even just a free awesome playground/park. read more

I had been to this Zoo around 3 years ago and had some good memories with my photography club there. My Girlfriend had been bugging me to take her out there so we finally bit the bullet and hit the road for the zoo. My god things have changed there in the last three years. Most cages had one animal of any species in them (sad) there were too many species we can see in our own backyard as well. They have taken out a bunch of the animals enclosures such as the Grizzly Bears (what the hell I wanted to see them). Most animals looked in distress or just downright depressed (I know I would be if I was in a cage all by myself no matter how large it was! There were almost no staff on hand at all to help us and the ones that were there did not help only annoyed the paying customer by skirting around questions that were asked. If we ask a question we want an answer or an honest try at one! For what this Zoo charges for parking and for entrance it should be the best zoo on earth with lots of animals in amazing encloses. The animals should look happy and engaged. There needs to be a government body to step in and make this place hold up to a standard for these animals as they cannot stand up for themselves. Watching that we bought a zoo movie maybe that guy should buy this zoo build a house and live here! Maybe then it would be run in a healthy manor for the animals! I could not recommend this place to anyone and would in fact warn people from wasting their money and supporting such a poorly run business that does not seem to treat their animals well. read more

Just went to the zoo today on a rare and beautiful sunny day. I love zoos and animals and since I've lived in Vancouver for so long, it was time to check it out. The drive was pretty easy and I was surprised they charged $5 for parking-yikes! I asked some people who were leaving whether I could buy the pass from them and they gave it to us for free :) WIN! The grounds were pretty clean, it would be good advice to bring walking shoes as it's a good hike around the site. The animals were out and enjoying the sun and breeze. I loved the giraffes and the arctic fox. However, I couldn't help to ask myself whether having Arctic Wolves and Arctic Foxes were helpful to them in this climate? The zebra looked dirty and I was surprised there were raccoons at the zoo -- you can find them in your neighbourhood anyways! I got to the park just in time for a tiger and lion feeding. It was brief, but fun to watch. A man got a little too close with his camera and the tiger's growl was amazing and powerful. You could actually feel it. I tried the concession -- corn dog was fried fresh -- hot dog was a decent size, but lacking in the condiments -- didn't look fresh. The main concession was in the same building as the restrooms and sadly, it stank! It was old and so smelly. That was really the gross point. I was surprised that the animals had a lot of space to roam around and that's great, however, it's really just grassland and trees. I hope that they take care of the animals well. Some of them looked a bit sad. The camels were dirty and hair was matted.... some of the grounds were muddy and wet and didn't seem comfortable for the animals. AND NO ELEPHANTS? I guess that's ok --- I read some of the other reviews and didn't know it was a privately owned place. There definitely needs to be more funding to improve this place, upgrade the facilities for the animals, the cleanliness and atmosphere. More signage would be great and just make it a fresher place to walk around. Really can't compare to the other zoos I've visited -- San Diego, Santa Ana, Los Angeles... read more

It's been over a year since we've visited the zoo and sadly things have gotten worse. Many paddocks were empty or under construction. The design of the zoo doesn't favour easy sightings since there are only a few vistas that are where the animals hang out or feed. I actually overheard one of the trainers say they had one of the newer birds of prey recently eaten by a lion because it panicked during one of the shows and flew to a log in the lion paddock! It was a hot day when we went so most of the animals were hiding from the heat and not visible. The lion and tiger feeding was enjoyable for the kids as was the hippo feeding however. If you do plan on coming, bring your own bikes as it's probably the best way to cover the most ground effortlessly, especially if you have younger kids who don't have as much experience riding in traffic this is a safe place to cycle. Save a few bucks and pack a picnic, the food ain't that great at the cafe and is overpriced. Probably will be the last time we visit... The Seattle and Portland zoos are much better options if you have the chance. read more

How did I forget to review this? I live right down the street and my kids have passes. Yes, expensive, yes they really don't have the rights to call themselves a "Zoo" (international body yanked that right two years ago). It is a private business, and really needs to be in the public domain. They do have excellent "sleep over at the zoo" events, and little kids can learn to respect and be familiar with animals here, but it certainly could be way better. I am not a huge supporter of animals in captivity, and would much prefer to see this run by people who aren't in it for business, but for science, education and enlightenment. read more

We visited the zoo on Christmas day. An interesting day to visit-- it was cold and snowy, and the zoo was absolutely empty. For Christmas, they decided to offer free admission. The gate was wide open, and the ticket window unstaffed. Indeed, during our stay, we did not see a single zoo employee. In total there must have been less than 10 people in the entire zoo, including ourselves. That made for a memorable and pretty unique experience, and I definitely think it was nice touch to offer free admission that day when they just as easily could have closed the zoo. Sadly, the zoo is not in good condition. It struck me as the kind of zoo you might find in a much smaller city, or perhaps in other parts of the world. Memories of fairly horrid establishments in mid-sized cities in Russia and China came to mind as we wandered about. Soon after arrival, I began to question whether we had come to right place. Could this really be the Greater Vancouver Zoo? It certainly suffers by comparison to other North American zoos. The modest Seattle zoo feels like a futuristic wonderland next to this place. Given the weather, there were not many animals out and about. The animal enclosures were an odd mix of retro-style chain linked cages and large open expanses where nothing could be seen. The siberian tigers were out and one of them snuck up on us and tried to attack through the fence. That was memorable too! A number of animals walked about "on the loose" (mostly birds, peacocks and such). Everything was closed so we didn't try the food court, but options were severely limited, as was seating. Overall it appears a relaxed place, very low key, and definitely in need of some upgrades. But a cool and unique experience nevertheless. read more

**Note** For the purpose of this review I am going to omit my feelings on animal treatment and opinions about the humanity of the zoo's owners, and basically anything Peta would throw stuff at me for. Okay, now we've got that out of the way. I'd never actually been to this zoo, so my boyfriend and I made the trip out there on the weeken, he being a huge fan of animals. The grounds are quite large, and there is a good variety of animals. We started in the North American animals (were I was lucky enough an elk was by the fence so I got some awesome flicks), and made out way to the African animals. We were there later in the day and the zebras had been brought inside already, but no bother. My favorites were the giraffes (which people despite the signs continually fed) and the lemurs (Leapin Lemurs!). On larger cages I think it would be helpful to have more signage as to what the animal is (I mistook a donkey for a pony, how embarassing!). Some animals were hiding in brush or whatnot so I didn't get to see them... but no bother, they can't control the animals hey? For the cost of admission, I would have expected a bit more. But it was late in the day on a long weekend Sunday. I didn't try the food nor the giftshop. The grounds were super clean and lots of staff who frequently corrected what I thought an animal was (my boyfriend lets it go, wolves were puppies, the cheetah was a kitty, any non-flying bird was an ostrich, etc). I wish there had been more restrooms around as on the opposite side from the restrooms I had a runny nose and no tissue. I would like to give this three and a half stars... I wasn't dazzled and I'm not dying to go back, but it was a really fun afternoon. Definately would recommend it for children or for those who have 28-year-old-animal-loving boyfriends. read more

I love the fact that we have a zoo that we can visit so close to where we live, but the poor quality of the zoo is hard to ignore. Almost half of the animals were not able to be seen and we looked really really hard for them! It was a hot day so I'm not sure if that had a lot to do with it. All the shows were so spaced out we would need to spend most of the day there...perhaps that is their strategy?? The petting zoo was closed either permanently or temporarily. There were so few staff around to ask for information. Maybe saw 4 or 5 the entire time! Maybe vacation days? We were a little frustrated since we paid $50 plus parking plus concession plus plus plus to be there and there wasn't much for us! I feel like this zoo is run very poorly or lacking the funds to keep staff and attractions going. Maybe the cost on Hippo food went up? Anyway I would maybe recommend this place as an absolute last resort for families. read more

Just got back from San Diego and visiting the zoo, the San Diego Safari Park and SeaWorld and it's compelled me to write a review of our local Vancouver zoo. You can't really compare the two zoos as the San Diego zoo is infinitely better in every regard. But I guess the difference is that the Vancouver zoo is privately owned and funded which obviously makes a huge difference in how the place operates and how the animals are displayed and cared for. That being said I think some of the design features of the San Diego zoo could update the Vancouver zoo and save it money while significantly improving the viewing experience of zoo goers. The San Diego zoo covers 100 acres with 3700 animals therefore it's actually much smaller than Vancouver while having more animals. The biggest draw back to the Vancouver zoo are the size of the enclosures and cages. This is a problem because the animals can then hide in the back and not be seen. In the 6-7 times I've been to the zoo I've seen the grizzly bear once. The enclosures at the San Diego zoo are much smaller therefore you can see all the animals and you don't feel robbed of your entrance fee when you don't get to see the animal you wanted to see. I would suggest making the Vancouver zoo smaller in size (120 acres to 70 acres) and keeping the same number of animals but making all of the enclosures smaller. The enclosures now are too wide and too deep. Instead they should be significantly shallower (perhaps only a quarter as deep) but wide so the animal can't back up but rather just go side to side so people can always see them. Making changes to the dimensions of the enclosures and placing them closer together would increase zoo goers experience, reduce the footprint of the zoo (sell off 50 acres) and reduce the amount of walking. This would all be beneficial in a many ways. With smaller enclosures zoo goers will have a much easier time with seeing the animals and that eliminates disappointment. If the Vancouver owner reduces the size of the zoo they could significantly reduce their lease or rent payments. Or if the owner owns the land they could sell some of it off for likely a huge sum of money to a local developer then put that money into improving and adjusting the sizes of all the enclosures and cages (or even a sub lease). The land could be developed into condos or townhouses that over look the zoo and could be marketed as "being so far out from the hustle and bustle that you live in the jungle!". Imagine the view from your condo and you get to look at lions, tigers and giraffes. Some people may think it's cruel to decrease the size of the enclosures and cages but from what I saw in San Diego the animals didn't seem to mind and appeared to be quite happy. All this while everyone is able to have a close up look at them. And for those who think it's cruel to keep any wild animal in captivity I couldn't disagree more. While living in the zoo the animals aren't starving or dying from dehydration like they would be in the wild. They're fed nutritious food that they don't have to scrounge up or fight other animals for. They're also not always looking over their shoulders for hungry predators or have to worry when they're sick or injured then being hunted down by other animals. This especially goes for the endangered species. Without the help of people they'd likely be killed by poachers or have their habitat destroyed by encroaching humans. The zoo seems like a pretty good place to live considering you get plenty of food, protection against predators, and love and attention from the handlers there. And for those people who say they look bored how would you know if they're bored or not??? In the wild they're just sitting around anyways, it's not like they're meeting up with friends for dinner then going out to the casino or playing racquet ball lol. People may continue to argue that no wild animal should be held captive in a zoo. Personally I don't see a problem with it especially an animal that's no where near to being endangered or extinct. You don't see anyone complaining about the cockroach exhibit and demanding that they be set free. There's thousands of bears in the wild so there's no harm in keeping a few at the zoo. Another tip that I think would be profitable and would increase the zoo goer experience is to allow people to feed the animals. For a small cost people can toss food to the lions or give mice and rats to the snakes. They do this at SeaWorld where you can pay to meet with animals and its keeper who will educate you on them. The Vancouver zoo is decent but could easily make some adjustments to the enclosures to enhance the zoo goer experience. So as for now I'd give the Vancouver zoo 2 stars. It was 3 stars until the train broke down. read more

Plus and minuses. They rip you off right on the parking lot, terrible. The place is already not cheap so the parking is an added sting. The animal enclosures are pretty sad, the highlights being the tiger (if you can spot him) and the lions (ditto) and the cheetah (ditto) and the snake and reptile house is pretty decent. You have to walk a lot as it's quite big. For my money the best part is the raptor show they have in the afternoons. They should do more of it and better. They charge for photos of you with the birds after, another dip into your pocket. The staff seem very decent and knowledgeable. The buildings and shops are very very sad, not enough benches and shade to sit on a hot day. Go for the raptor show, in the afternoons, but the rest you could skip read more

Animals here sleep more than entertain. The GV Zoo has been facing controversy for years. people say they don't properly treat the animals with care. From other zoos I've visited, GV Zoo lack some features. They mostly have cages for their animals and giant fields. Bad. no washrooms outside and pay parking is inside the zoo and in a resting area there is a vending machine but it doesn't work.

I feel so bad for the animals in this disgusting excuse for a zoo. I feel ashamed that this zoo represents Greater Vancouver - we could do so, so much better. I remember a few years back when the giraffes started to die: soon enough there were none left. The animals that are still left have tiny enclosures and they all seem miserable. The cafe here is also very gross, as are the bathrooms. The last time I was here was December 30, 2014 and I have not been back since, although I doubt it has improved much. We did have a somewhat magical experience with the cougar: it was purring super loud and rubbing up against the fence, just like a giant housecat. I hope this zoo gets a major makeover, although I really don't see that happening. Realistically I hope the animals here can be sent to wildlife sanctuaries, or can at least be sent to a decent zoo, like Woodland Park in Seattle. I've signed the petition to close this zoo, and I can only hope it comes to fruition. read more

I have been going to this Zoo since I was a young girl and I would take my children at the end of every school year, and when we moved away at least every other summer. I love it there , it is small , it is expensive , but its a healthy day out with your family and you always learn something new about something when you go. I feel its a great memory building for your family. Yes sometimes the animals are not where you can see them , but if you took a safari somewhere you might not see them either so. As for people who compain about Zoo's do your homework , these hard working people are doing there absolute best to look after these animals and care for them so pay a couple extra bucks help them out . read more
