Also being a vet nurse myself, there are certain ways to hold cats depending on what needs to be assessed or medicated etc. As it was to do with the ears, you actually do have to put quite a bit of restraint to get medication in there. With cats, they may be fine with the owner but when it comes to a stranger, it's quite difficult to hold the animal in place AS WELL as medicate accordingly without causing any harm to ourselves or the patient. They are well known as exotic specialists. So best place to take your small animals, birds, reptiles, rodents etc. I go to mt albert pet doctors (which are now based at Lynfield Pet Doctors or the new exotic referral center in St Lukes) and trust them completely with my fur babies.

So, when the time was needed, my poor big boof of a cat needed some treatment for his ears I went on in on a weeknight. The reception staff were friendly and helpful but the Vet himself was not. He didn't introduce himself and was a bit rough handling of my boy, (defensive mother coming out). Since it was our first visit there, impressions were important. I had to push for information from the guy and the medicine I got was treatment that upon reading the label said "to be used as a last resort only", a highly dangerous anti-biotic. I tried to exercise compassion for the Vet doctor, thinking maybe he is just over worked and under paid, or has something going on in his private life, but none the less I am a bit cautious of going back there. Hence the reason I almost gave this rating two stars only. They have recently informed me that they have changed their name, it use to be called Mount Albert Vet Hospital, preferring to be listed as 'Pet Doctor's Mt Albert'.

Dr. Chris is the sole vet and he tends to all the animals. I really like this about the Normanby vets because it's always the same person looking after your pet. We have returned here with our cat ever since the free neutering day and we have always been really happy with the care our cat receives and the prices. This vet doesn't seem focused on profit like some others I have been to in the past. Their website is also really thoughtful offering tips and advice on how to care for your pets from fireworks to ageing to weight control it just shows they are always looking to help.

Stuff that. I don't drive (part blind), had caught the bus. On the return bus ride home, drove past this place so got off the bus, walked in without an appointment, explained what happened and these guys looked after me from the get-go. Vaccinated my kitten, asked all the right questions re: eating and toilet habits, gave great care advice and were highly professional. Unbelieveable. Guaranteed return customer here. Won't name-drop the other vet but will leave feedback on this forum for them.

Or, on a lighter note, when I took our Scottish Terrier cross, Lulu in for a clip and they didn't even bat an eyelid when she pooped on the floor. I was mortified. As well as having wonderful vets, Pet & Vet also have a good range of food including raw options for cats and dogs. There's toys, carry cages, leads etc as well. They even have a cattery for when you go on Holiday. Just make sure your cats vaccinations are up to date at least two weeks before you leave.

Initially I called Pet Stop, unfortunately they did not have raw pet food, only the freeze dried treats. The sales clerk did suggest I call Amimates, as they are a larger shop and would have more variety. Once I called I spoke with a young man who was very friendly, knowledgeable about their products and patient with my questions. He provided a few options of raw food and dry food then gave me the store hours. Seeing as I had just picked up my dog from quarantine, I needed to get food for him. This shop is the equivalent to a smaller version of Petco in the States. It has all the major food brands (of New Zealand), along with flea treatments, toys, beds and other pet essentials. The staff is very friendly and helpful and of course they loved Titus. Although I prefer smaller Mom & Pop shops, this one will do for now.

There are in store specials, buy 2 get 1 free sort of thing and other discounts and offers that you would not get from a smaller pet store. This place is usually mega busy, especially on the weekends. Three cool things about this pet store, 1) you can take your pet inside on a lead so they can come shopping with you 2) they have a store cat that hangs out in the fish and aquarium section and 3) the staff give out treats to your dog. A great shopping experience for both animal and owner.

The dogs get large pens and they are always clean and look well taken care of. The pets themselves don't seem very young, so if you're looking for a new baby puppy or bunny, I'd look elsewhere. Good thing about them is they sell puppies and kittens on behalf of the SPCA. Their staff seem like animal lovers who know a little bit about pets, but not people who know a lot. I've been bunny hunting this weekend and was disappointed they only had two bunnies, and they were pretty big.

Checking my cat in was fine - I filled out a form detailing his usual medication (which I brought with me to give to them), and his special diet (which they assured me over the phone they often feed the cats anyway, and had plenty of to give him). He was weighed and given a cursory mouth check, then whisked away into the building somewhere. I was told he would be given a senior health check for free while he was there, I gave them his blanket and we left. Picking him up was a different matter. There was one person at the desk, and she wasn't particularly friendly. We gave her our cage, and she took it out back, then came back out and wandered about counting stock until the phone rang, whereupon she informed us they were having some trouble with our cat, and she would go and get him. Now, our cat doesn't like going into his cage (what cat does?) but it's quite simple - just lift the lid, pop him in, and close the lid. We do it all the time. So she emerges with the cat, swinging the cage and the poor cat is splay-legged, and wailing loudly. She hands him over with the medication, and says goodbye. I had to ask for his blanket, and also ask whether or not he'd had his medication. There was no mention of the health check, whether or not it was done or what the results of it were. Very perfunctory. The biggest problem, though, is that I don't believe they fed him the right food, as my poor cat has had terrible diarrhea since coming back home (he has been to a cattery before where we physically gave them the food without incident in this regards). He has IBS and we've worked very hard to get him to a point where he's on the right food and solid, regular bowel movements, and now we're back to square one again. I won't be taking him back there, and I'd encourage anyone else to double-triple check that the staff know what your cats needs are and whether or not they can properly care for them before leaving them there.

We like…read moreit because it is right near the vet clinic and surgery, so if anything goes wrong while our cats are in cattery care, qualified vets and nurses are really close which is reassuring. Our male cat is very timid and here they monitor and record each cat's behaviour regarding eating etc. If a cat doesn't touch its food for more than two days in a row that cat is then moved in to the vet clinic for closer monitoring and care. We also take our dog here for general care, they are really good at letting you know when your pet is due for it's injections as they send a courtesy letter. This place is not cheap, in fact it is probably one of the most expensive vet clinics I have come across, however that being said they really do know what they are doing here and the medical care that they provide in incomparable in my opinion.

Recently I made my first trip into Pet Shop Boyz through a spontaneous discovery wandering around…read morethe area, it was a handy discovery as I wanted to buy some good quality cat food. I bought a 1Kg bag of HIll's Science Diet cat pellets for $21.00, not too bad a price. This shop had a good range of pet toys, grooming gear and a selection of pet food available. As I was heading out the door I noticed they had animals for sale, so I went and said hello to a bunch of sleeping kittens, one puppy and some beautiful birds and rabbits. The rabbits were particularly adorable, but it was a shame the cages were quite cramped for such big creatures. The staff were really friendly and attentive too.
