The customer service at the deli/hot bar was terrible. I asked for some vinegar as a condiment for my sandwich and was told "no." And the guy walked off. This was for a completely dry sandwich that came with no mustard no mayonnaise no butter no dressing. Another time I asked for salt and was told "no." I tracked down the manager who said "of course you can have salt." He gave me some in a small plastic cup. Since then I noticed they have packets of salt on the counter. That's great. Hopefully, they'll add packets of vinegar and maybe some mustard and mayonnaise (or they could have bottles for in-store diners' use. They really they need to be trained on Customer Service and I see other people have complained about that too. It's a shame. read more

I can't imagine using this place as my primary grocery store, especially when we've got a perfectly serviceable locally owned grocery in Fosters three blocks away and an excellent weekly farmers market. I'm a fan of their pre-made foods (they do tofu well, go figure) but the hot bar can be hit or miss. Agreed that they need to rotate their deli display more often. They pretty much turn a blind eye towards their sitting areas and occasionally you'll have to deal with a homeless person having a mental health episode while you eat your lunch, which is tough. read more

I ordered a sandwich at 11:35 I arrived at 12:20 and they hadn't started making the sandwich....What more needs be said?

I was prepared to drop some dough here, buying lunch, a few things for myself, and gluten free items for a relative with celiac whose birthday is coming up. I found the business but overshot it, turned around on a side street, and came back, signalling as I was going to take one of the parking slots with meters. I had to wait for oncoming traffic. It was obvious what I was waiting for, but a rude driver honked at me repeatedly. Finally I park and there are no signs to indicate what days/hours you must pay. I get out my reading glasses and peer into the meter. There are four lines of verbiage, the first three about rates and the fourth illegible due to the curvature of the meter glass. I then go over to the takeout window to ask do you have to put money in the meter on Sundays but there is no one there. There is no bell to ring. I wait but no one comes to help me. Signs or better yet a parking lot would have got my business. Between this and the panhandler down the street downtown Greenfield did not impress me and I do not expect to return. read more

Typically I am not a Co-op kind of guy, but occasionally I like to stop in at Green Fields Market for some great freshly made items. When we stop in at this store I make it a point to buy their fresh French Baguettes because they are tasty and reasonably priced. Their deli and hot food items as pretty good, and I have heard great things about their deserts as well. The other items in the store are great, but at times can be a bit overpriced. That being said, the staff is always polite, and if I have some extra change in my pocket I prefer to spend it here because I know that it will benefit the local community. In the end, not a bad place to shop but be prepared to shell out some pretty pennies. read more

I was in a 2-day seminar recently and needed to get lunch quickly. Green Fields was near my location. OMG! What a delight! I'm big into health foods and they had the most wonderful selection of pre-made foods that were delicious! Day 1 - lunch was house salad with a fantastic ginger dressing, carrot salad and a blueberry oat bar. It was just the right amount of food, with very little garlic, if any. Day 2 - roast beef strips, beet salad and blueberry oat bar. I also got snacks for my drive home (tangerine slices, cheese, almonds). I also got a salmon strip with lemon and a house salad for dinner when I got home. They have tables if you want to eat in both on the first floor and in the mezzanine. They also have handmade sandwiches, all kinds of other foods and the folks working were friendly and informative. They are stocked with wonderful groceries. If you're in Greenfield and like really good healthy food, don't miss this market. read more

Green Fields Market is a local organic co-op, large for a local place, and varied. They have a beautiful array of pastries, breads, cookies, and cakes, homemade soups and a salad bar, sandwiches in their refrigerated section, a nice selection of organic fruits and vegetables, and a great array of vitamins and herbs, in both containers and in bulk. I wish they had more dairy items and more organic chicken. It's also frequently crowded and hectic inside, and the prices are high. Given their high prices, it's surprising that they stopped refunding the glass milk containers because homeless people were buying them, pouring the milk out, and asking for the refund back. What's the problem with this? Why do we non-homeless people care how the homeless people use (or don't use their milk)? Why not just give all of us our refund back, as you're supposed to do? You pay more for the bottle and are supposed to receive a refund. It's greedy and controlling not to give the money back. A better idea would be to offer credit towards your grocery bill. My point is, Greenfield's is a great co-op, BUT, they have a bit of an attitude. This has been exemplified not only by the milk, but by our interactions with one of the main co-op "owners". On more than three occasions, my partner and I have had the pleasure -- (ha ha -- not so much!) -- of dealing with a short, bearded, middle-aged man with glasses who is rude and condescending (ironic, since he can barely see over our heads) and has made our visits to the Co-op quite unpleasant. One time, when we reached the front of the line at checkout, he demanded that we switch lines because he felt we had more than the number of items allowed in the Express Lane. We had exactly the right number. We explained we had (I think 5 items). He saw this, but didn't apologize. Another time, he commented that we couldn't leave our basket with him at the line, and that we needed -- like good children -- to put it back where we found it. This was said in a condescending voice. The third time, I asked him where the bathroom was, and he remarked, "It's by the back registers." I didn't know they had back registers, so I said, "the registers?" and pointed towards the front. And, he responded, speaking slowly, with a sneer, "The BACK registers," as though I were struggling with a low IQ. On the other hand, the women who check us out at the front have been nothing but lovely: cheerful, considerate, and kind. Just what I'd expect in the local co-op. My point is, people, we all have the same values, which is why we're all in this organic, whole foods, local store together! Can't we all be a little bit nice to one another? And, can't the managers train some of the staff to be nicer? Then, I won't even think of crying over spilled milk. ;) read more

I go here almost every time we visit family who live just north of Greenfield. My usual "agenda" is to get a nice workout in at the gym a couple of storefronts down, then head to the Green Fields Market for something to eat post-workout. For purposes of full disclosure....I am very, very conflicted about the Green Fields Market. I really, really like the place's commitment to organic foods and local sourcing and they have a fabulous selection of most everything I want, from packaged foods to vitamins and supplements. I really, really don't find myself very impressed by the prepared foods section and have yet to have a sandwich made at the deli there that's been anything more than utterly disappointing....and, at the risk of being called an uptight city dweller by staff and regulars at the place, it just shouldn't take as long as it does to get waited on at the deli and finally get my order. I think the Green Fields Market has the right mission and gets a lot right, but....well....they kinda miss big on a few things, too...hence my feeling of being conflicted. Two stars just feels too nasty a rating to give a place that's this well-intentioned, but I have an issue with giving it three (and saying it's "A-OK"...). I double Rue's review of five years ago: Green Fields has about as large a selection as you'd find from a natural foods market of its size (barring the chains or the late lamented Bread & Circus), the quality is good, and it's always hopping, but even for a health food store the prices are out of sight, and it's obviously a place for the well-heeled natural shopper. (By way of the most recent example, my wife ordered from Amazon *three* tubes of the same brand and size of arnica gel for half the price Green Fields was selling ONE for two weeks ago.) Those of us less well off -- and this is by no means a wealthy town -- are compelled to go elsewhere. I've also found a surprising lack of takeaway cold beverages, other than fruit smoothies. (Sorry, I'm not paying $3 for a half-pint fruit smoothie when I can pay $1.50 for a *liter* of cold DC at Shaw's down the street. There's being earthy-crunchy, and then there's possessing a soupcon of common sense.) They're looking to move the place out of the downtown, probably to somewhere they can hack down a few acres of virgin forest, and that takes it out of our orbit entirely ... although, no doubt, the aforementioned well-heeled clientele would think themselves well shot of the clipboard-wielding petition pushers, the panhandlers and the street guitarists who can often be found around the place. read more

Aww this place is everything a coop should be. It warmed my heart to walk in the doors. Great variety of healthy natural foods, and fairly cheap compared to Boston prices. For instance the Daiya vegan cheese was only $3.50 a bag here whereas it's around $5 a bag in Boston. Other things were also cheaper. They also carried a vegan pate which i have NEVER found in Massachusetts. That was exciting! Their vegetable selection was nice - some local veggies and other organic veggies from all over. I saw things that I never see in other stores - sunchokes, purple sweet potatoes, celeriac root, etc. I bought some purple sweet potatoes to take back to Boston. I would have bought more things but my friend had purchased a bunch of yummy for me the day before from here (bbq tempeh, these crepe wrap like things with mushrooms and spinach - amazing!) They have a sandwich deli shop as well as other fresh and packaged prepared foods. I didn't see a lot of vegan options but maybe it varies each day. In the baked goods section I did see one vegan option (no cupcakes though that were mentioned in the reviews below). Upstairs are tables and chairs to eat your lunch, drink coffee, catch up with coop friends. The day I went (this past Sunday) they were highlighting different cooperatives and they featured Equal Exchange. I use to work there so I was happy to see EE being featured and the coop and fair trade model explained to customers. They also will honor other coop memberships so if you shop there and you belong to another coop you can still get a discount! They also have working members so they too get a discount. On a coop management side, having been a former coop Board member myself at another coop, I thought it was awesome how they had coop meeting minutes, agendas, and info about each board members posted on their bulletin boards. I had a very disappointing experience at the Green Fields Maket on Main Street in Greenfield. I recently moved to Greenfield and was rather excited that there was a cooperative market on the main street. I was looking forward to checking out this market. On this particular day I went with a friend to grab something to eat as we had been working all day and needed something in a hurry. Admittedly I did not check out the whole store thoroughly and for the purposes of this review I'm only talking about the deli and kitchen area.This is only the second time I have ever placed a review on yelp of any kind. I was shocked at the state of the deli and kitchen area. The prepackaged foods they had were completely predictable, unappetizing. Their prices were absolutely insane! The deli counter itself had a very unimpressive display that looked tired out-- as if its contents had been sitting there for the entire week, getting old. The woman working behind the counter was, perhaps, overworked. I say this because she was the only person there and she seemed completely detached and disinterested about the customer she was dealing with. I took some time to look around the area for something that would tickle my fancy. I came across a hot table with hot entrée-type foods. I don't exaggerate when I say that it was a breeding ground for food poisoning at best. It looked awful-As if it had been on display since morning -and no good kitchen manager in their right mind would've allowed food to sit out for sale that looked like that! I'm not sure if they even make their own food there or if it's coming out of a can or prepackaged but it really did not look safe or appetizing! My friend and I settled for ordering two Italian wraps which were OK though they were filled with dill pickles and very wet American black olives which dripped out the bottom of the wrap and were completely not worth the price we paid for them. My friend also got some pesto tortellini from the prepackaged section which... How do you go wrong with that but they did. It was as if they took unsalted cooked tortellini, mixed them with basic oil and basil and didn't add any cheese garlic or other flavoring. Terrible! A terrible experience all around and not one I will repeat in my lifetime unless there is a major transformation at the store. In the meantime, if they would like a recommendation for someone who would turn their deli kitchen area into something to write home about, I would be happy to recommend that person. Yuck! I agree that this place is pricey, especially for students or others on a budget. What I appreciate is the fresh produce I picked up and non-dairy products that other markets don't carry. I was able to buy a soy coffee creamer and some delicious coconut milk ice cream, which are two items I thought I would never have again. I go here once a week on Sundays for the foods they make in the deli. My favorite things to eat here are almost any of their different style burritos (pork Dijon, curry chicken, etc.), the thai meatballs, the turkey meatloaf, and basically any sandwich they have on the chalkboard menu. They serve pizza on Sundays and it's alright, nothing to write home about. Haven't tried any of their desserts yet. The soups are always good. And the bread rolls that you can find next to the soups are pretty good as well. I usually spend about $15 every time I eat here (I eat more than the average person in one sitting). So in my opinion most of the items from their deli are fairly priced coming from a local grocery market. I don't grocery shop here besides maybe one or two items that may peek my interest from time to time. read more

A month ago I walked in to apply to have my membership share refunded because after 10 years of being a member I was moving and wanted to transfer my coop membership to the local coop. No one in the store knew how to deal with the request! Finally, 3 staff members later, someone found a membership book to write requests in. I wrote the request and left. I received a call days later that I had to fill out a special form to request a refund. That 'special form' should have been in a section of the membership book for someone to turn to, and pull out a blank form and hand it to me on the spot. I finally got a form several days later and mailed it in. And waited. Waiting. Still waiting. Now, over a month later I call today and speak to Customer Service. "R" kept telling me she couldn't do anything about it, it wasn't her job, there was only one staff member who could handle memberships requests and it wasn't her. She also interrupted - a lot, making the call longer than necessary. So, have I been happy as a member for the last decade? Yes. Am I satisfied with how they handle membership termination? Absolutely not! read more

Do not buy dairy products here! Four times now, I have bought dairy products that turned out to be rotten. I've bought spoiled milk three times and a bag of shredded cheese that was filled with mold (it wasn't visible through the wrapping, but when I opened it, it was all over about half of it). Nice to have a food cooperative in the middle of the town in which I live, yet the favorable review stops here. It's hard to leave not feeling ripped off. The prices are more expensive than Whole Foods, and I stopped going to the latter years ago because of the cost. We've got a year round farmers' market here in Greenfield, and a one-store, family-owned supermaket, Foster's, that carries a big selection of reasonably priced organic local produce, thus that's where I grocery shop, except for the occasional need for a grocery store a few blocks away, when I go to the Co-op, considering it more a convenience store. Earlier this week, I bought three half gallons of coconut milk at the Co-op that was signed as on sale (for the price it's always sold at Trader Joe's in Hadley). Later, from the receipt, I saw that I was charged the non sale price (about 150% of the price at TJ's). When I returned a few days later, I noticed it was still "on sale", brought one to the register, and was again charged the full price. Thus, for at least three days, folks buying the product thought they were getting it on sale while being charged full price. After being refunded the difference between the advertised price and the price charged, I noted to the manager that when this happens at other markets, the full charge for the item is refunded. We're not other markets, was the reply, which, for a store that is owned by its members and prides itself on being community minded, I found unsatisfying. Beyond that, simply refunding the difference between the advertised and charged prices provides no incentive for the store to get it right, i.e., charge customers the advertised prices. Rather, it encourages Green Fields Market to continue the practice of advertising a sale while charging the non sale price because it takes days, at least in this case, before anyone notices, if anyone ever does. About buffet and other food to go: Quality is good, particularly early in meal times. Salad things were crisp, hot bar items not (yet?) over cooked. And it's quick! But at least some staff do not know how to answer questions. If you're in the deli area adjacent the hot bar, "that's not my department, you'll have to ask...." is NOT an acceptable answer to a question about the UNLABELED food on the hot bar. "Over there" is not a good enough description of where a customer can find a thing they asked about. Pre-packed to go items in good condition, with flavors reasonably between "bland" and "too spicy." Pastry tray could use a fly trap. Do go there, but hopefully someone will work on the customer (member owner) service. read more

Like all coops, some items are crazy pricey, some items are value-priced and affordable. Local produce is market-priced and labeled from the farm of origin. They carry a wide variety of local milk as well as certified organic products from major farms. The cheese selection reflects local Mass products as well as those from nearby Vermont. I admire that they are trying to stock the shelves with items from local producers; to me it is always worth the extra dollar to support a local business. read more

Whenever I have money at school, I do so much shopping at the Greenfield co-op, it's ridiculous. This place is really great. They have a pretty decent assortment of things in jars - flour, granola ingredients, rice - and a nice variety of various medicinal goods and supplements. They seem to buy local a lot too, which is really super. Of course, they can be a little expensive sometimes (their produce, for instance, or their tea), but I think the price is generally all right for the goods they sell. Green Fields Market also has a small deli complete with salad bar, soup, tea, and a small bakery. I especially love their Sonny sandwich - delicious! I also pick up at least one item from their day-old bread bin every time I go; last time, I got some zucchini-parmesan bread that was pretty damn good. They have small dining areas for the deli both downstairs and upstairs, so you can eat your sandwich while looking down at the store or out the window. It's pretty nice and laid back. The people who work here are also major sweet. read more

I don't often buy groceries from the co-op, since they're pricey, unless on offer. So I'm only rating the food here, mostly the sandwiches (the Great Imposter & the Reubenesque), & their amazing death by chocolate cake. They make their sandwiches on the spot, so you get yummy hot sandwiches for a decent price. I liked their tomato eggplant soup too, delicious flavors. I've gotten their readymade plastic boxed food, & that's just okay, nothing special but certainly edible. I really like this place. I wouldn't shop here- you can find most of this hippee organic stuff elsewhere in WMass for a better price. However, they make the BEST vegan cupcakes I have ever had. They are amazing. It's also always a good place to stop for lunch- some of their specials are super yummy. I'm a co-op kid, granted, I'm a former local, but this place rocks. It has that Whole Foods buffet feel without, well, being Whole Foods (not a huge fan of the corporate hippee stores). I've love to be able to get myself a good vegan cupcake there again someday, unfortunately that's just not something you see a lot out here in Idaho. read more
