Every time I'm in Brisbane, this IS the place to visit. There is always some type of event going on…read moreon the weekends. One of the greatest was the week long Buddhist celebration ! All free with amazing entertainment and educational presentations. Good food, too. Children's play areas, benches along the river to be able to just sit, talk, watch the river traffic and wildlife. You can board the free ferry boats to other areas of Brisbane from here. Swim from the beaches, or walk through the beautiful gardens. Or, take a nap on the expansive, warm grass . . . . . Christmas lighting etc. is indescribable. You should try a 'warm weather' Christmas and New Year start.

How anyone could give this less than five stars is beyond me. The substantial length of riverfront…read morespace includes several artificial pools, even one with a beach (you wouldn't want to go in the river anyway), a rainforest walk, some kind of Nepali temple, a ferris wheel, docks for boats, and about a thousand other things. You'll spend some money if you go to one of the nearby eateries, for sure, or on parking if you drive, but the place itself is free and open. Split bike and pedestrian walkways and ample transit access make this area a frequent stop for commuters and tourists, and numerous attractions abound nearby, but here's the really good news: it's in Brisbane. Brisbane is not that crowded. So, unlike some of the public parks and water-based attractions in the really major cities (sorry, Brisbanites), you can actually find some space here, even during peak hours in the summer. The only reason not to come is if you've run out of sunscreen.

If I grew up in Brisbane and was looking for a place to throw my 10th birthday party, this place…read morewould be heaven. Actually, I am 21 years old and it is still heaven. I brought a friend from couchsurfing who'd been travelling through Brisbane for an activity that was fun and out of the ordinary. The walls were covered in futuristic paintings that looked like they'd been done back in the '80s and made me feel right at home. (I grew up in the 'burbs.) On the night we played, there were two separate birthday parties happening simultaneously, i.e. it was pure chaos. The staff there seemed to handle it very well, though, and were very helpful to us first timers. After we signed up, we received neat name tags with our laserforce identities that could be kept for future games. There's a clean, open area for adults to relax, as well as an arcade area for kids who are still hyped up on adrenaline and sugar. The actual laser force is the bomb. Sure, you're wearing sweaty helmets that stink of hormones and you're versing pre teens who will slaughter you the moment you hit the floor, but there's real joy in running around a giant warehouse shooting invisible lasers at each other. Come to Laserforce if you're looking to find your inner child, or if like me, you are actually still a child.

I'm sure most everyones familiar with the concept of the game, but for those people not in the know (You sad sad humans) the premise is relatively simple. You are on a mission to kill or disarm as many baddies on the other team as you can. Cast all loyalties aside and watch the competitive natures come out in your friends or familia. (Coupled with an over blown lazer pointer cased in a plastic gun.) If you have kids DO make sure to introduce them to the lazer show on a saturday the place on weekends is heaving with kids and they will make a bunch of friends in no time. If you are an adult DO make sure to stay as far away from this place as possible on a saturday these kids are hocked up on slush puppies and sugar. They will eat your face if you get in their way. Tremendously fun for kids (and making for a hilarious experience when intoxicated.) I highly recommend paying this place a visit.

This is such a good little park for an intimate get together. It sports these features:…read more- wood fire bbq - pizza oven - communal veg garden (good for little kids to explore) - toilet - shelter + tables - playground set - basketball court - bus stop (for the 198 route which runs every half hour or so from 8am to 6pm) The garden is run by community group Spiral. The garden beds, shelter and oven were built by them so please respect their hard work while you use the facilities. The 198 bus runs there from the middle of Boundary Street, and along Hardgrave Road. It also returns you to Vulture Street. In the morning there are various exercise groups that use the area. Look a little closer and you'll find that the shelter is home to a clay pizza oven and beside it sits a thriving community garden! Someone has put some effort into making this a special little park. I haven't tried out the pizza oven myself, but I've heard from a couple of friends that it takes a bit of preparation. There is some wood in the park, but you might not want to risk it being damp from rain, otherwise you'll never get your fire to start. Taking some good firewood along is advisable and getting the fire started a couple of hours in advance means you'll have a nicely heated oven and some good hot coals on which to place your pizzas. You also don't really want to be preparing your pizzas in the park, unless you've got everything chopped up and ready to go. For ease, bring them ready-made so you can stick them straight in the oven. Be sure to bring implements for getting the pizzas in and out! Cooking pizzas in Paradise Park is probably an activity best suited to people who live close by (like a couple of streets away) as it does take some forward planning. If you're the organised type, however, and don't mind packing a huge picnic basket, take a basketball and frisbee along with a good group of friends and settle in for a couple hours as you prepare the oven.

But never fear, Visible Ink is here to help. It turns out the government IS there for the people often in ways you wouldn't even expect. Visible Ink is a government branch set up to help Brisbane youth (between 12- 26) with their creative pursuits. It doesn't matter what branch of creativity you work under, Visible Ink has space and facilities that are useful to pretty much everybody. They have rehearsal spaces, an art room, photocopiers, free access to internet and computers and office space for meetings and workshopping. The fine folk at Visible Ink often have a hand in local events around town. One such event was this year's Valley Fiesta, where Visible Ink had a stage where musicians who regularly use the facilities could perform. The staff at Visible Ink are great to chat with about your plans- they're masters at giving out practical and useful advice and thinking about your plans in ways you'd never imagined. To use office space and facilities, you do have to fill out an application form that will often take 3-4 weeks to be processed, where you have to site why you want to use the space (FYI: it's ok for you to use the space for non commercial ventures as well). If you're between 12-26 and want some help in setting up your creative venture, maybe you should stroll on down to Visible Ink in Greensquare Close, Fortitude Valley.

This is a space for young people (under 26) and gives often marginalised young people a chance to express themselves in ways they wouldn't normally have the opportunity to. There are five Visible Ink spaces across Brisbane, however, this review is for the Fortitude Valley space. I was lucky enough to be a part of the 2010 Visible Ink Incubator program and was able to make friends and work with young people in our community doing everything from animation to music composition to film production. Perhaps the best thing has been seeing these friends use Visible Ink as a spring board to bigger and better projects and opportunities - which I guess is what is at the heart of what Visible Ink do. Tenants and Incubators can take advantage of the knowledge of staff across all facets of setting up a business, organising an event (however big the scale) and feel empowered to bring their ideas (within reason) to life.
