This is a cute Korean Asian store that has the gist of your basic Korean ingredients for cooking. Given it's a small store the prices are a little expensive but workable. They have select precut meats that are great for KBBQ and Korean side dishes "banchan" that make meal prep super duper easy. Me and my husband love the pickled garlic stems. They also have prepped ingredients for bibimbap, where all you need is to add rice. If you're looking for basic Korean staples, you can go wrong checking this place out. read more

I don't remember what is your credit card minimum, but I came in here to buy ice cream for my family after dinner and was told you could not accept credit cards because I didn't meet your minimum. tl;dr: misinformation, irresponsible, and rude. Do not go there unless you are willing to risk being mistreated. I came to the store with my friend to ask for a refund of a handi-grate purchased earlier. The handi-grate was purchased on June 21, 2020. We wanted to return it because it felt like have been used. On the receipt of that purchase (attached), it has stated clearly that hardware can be returned within 14 days of purchase. It certainly qualifies the condition to be returned, except that the manager insists that it does not. Why would the store's manager refuse to refund the item? According to her, they have a policy that they are no longer taking refunds due to COVID-19. That is understandable, but I explained to the manager that we were not informed of that before making the purchase, and their receipt tells otherwise. By the tone of the manager, it was clearly our fault that we did not notice a sign beside their counter stating that policy (btw, it was not the easiest place to look at, but that's not the point), and they are not slightly responsible for printing a contradicting refund policy on their receipt. We have argued for a short time but we eventually got pissed by their attitude and decided to leave despite not getting a refund. A few minutes later, I decided to get back to them. It's because after thinking a bit more about it, it has become clear to me that they should be responsible for putting the wrong refund policy on their receipts. However, this time the manager was not in the store. I reiterated the issue to the staff at the counter again, and she told me that she's simply an employee. Again, I understand that, so I asked her to call her manager, and either I spoke to the manager over the phone, or she could come to the store. However, the staff kept telling me that I could talk to the manager if I waited there for 30 minutes, or I could go to another store to find her myself, and kept refusing my request to call her manager. Eventually, I felt disgusted and left again. In my opinion, there are three things that store has done wrong: (1) they print wrong information on their receipts, (2) after realizing that they have done that, they refuse to take responsibility, and (3) after all that and their customer has shown their dissatisfaction, they refuse to put someone who can take responsibility to listen to or have a conversation with their customer. Again, I personally understand it if a store decides to not deal with a refund due to COVID-19, and my dissatisfaction is not because of that. As I have stated in my last paragraph, my dissatisfaction comes from a combination of their misinformation, their irresponsibility, and their rudeness. I DO NOT recommend this place because I don't want anyone to experience that. Alas, my friend has been a customer of this place for 5 years, and she says she will not step into this store ever again. read more

Always been happy with green onion. They are definitely a bit more pricey than other places on campus for some "as is" packaged goods, but generally speaking the cleanliness, and the responsive customer service is always what brings us back to green onion. I could get my box of shin ramen for a dollar or two cheaper somewhere else, but with all of the other korean produce that we need, which is better quality at green onion, it just makes sense to buy everything here. I will say the points system is kinda wonky, but that doesn't speak to anything that actually matters. I don't remember the math but you have to spend an insane amount of money at green onion to get 10 dollars back in rewards, which basically nullifies the use of it in the first place. Probably would be better to make this something more achievable and would drive more customers to use it, and drive up sales even more. But since that is neither here nor there, i don't think it warrants taking a star away. In general green onion is great, good product, great workers. read more

Favorite Korean grocery store in the area! A huge plus is that they sell fresh banchan (I've gotten their seasoned anchovy and squid before), which most Asian grocery stores here don't do. They also sell kimbap, which I'm excited to try in the future. Prices are definitely above what you'd see in bigger cities, but that's expected. There's a huge variety of items here I haven't seen since I was still running around in diapers! Overall, I would say the smallest Asian grocery store around Champaign, but because it's the newest, it's also the nicest/cleanest of the lot. They have a whole wall full of kitchen appliances, all the little snacks and candies you would typically find in a tradtional Asian grocery store, and they even have the million different varieties of drinks, those fun jell-o shots that I thought were illegal..., and lots of fresh produce. Overall, I would choose to shop here over the other Asian grocery markets for its cleanliness, but may have to make another trip to Am-Ko or Far East as Green Onion doesn't always carry what I'm looking for. read more

I was a little disappointed in Green Onion. I went in for the first time to try to get some lemon grass for a soup I was making, but when I got there I realized I didn't know what lemon grass looked like. That would have been ok, except that all the produce was either unlabeled or not labeled in English, and also shrink wrapped (preventing me from smelling any of it to help me figure out what it was.) I ended up guessing ("what looks the most like grass?") and when I got out to my car and ripped the shrink wrap off to smell my purchase immediately discerned that I had Bok Choi and not lemon grass. I hate Bok Choi!! They did have a better selection of rice wine (sake and korean varieties) than anywhere else in town, and about 20 kinds of mochi (I love mochi!) I'm sure it's really hard to get actual asian produce to champaign, so I guess in retrospect I shouldn't be surprised that most of their inventory was varieties of asian noodles and dry grains. I can see why, if I were an Asian student, I would like to come to Green Onion to get my brand of noodle bowl that I can't get anywhere else. However, as the gringo aspiring chef that I am, I am sad to report that this isn't the place for me to get the sauces and spices I need for my asian cooking as I hoped it would be. On the bright side, my trip did make me realize that Schnuck's actually has an acceptable variety of the ingredients that I usually need (e.g., fish sauce, vegetable oil, chili sauce.) read more

I used to love shopping at Green Onion. I didn't mind that their prices were higher. However I do mind that their service has gotten worse. For the premium they charge at least they could be a little more friendly. Far East and Am-ko both are more reasonably priced. If you are preparing a hot pot event, then here's a convenient place for the thin-sliced meat. I commend them for differentiating hot-pot lamb/beef/pork from shabu shabu lamb/beef/pork although i really don't think there's difference there in the meat itself. The butane burner and butane gas served their functions well. The pot has a funny name printed in Chinese, Chrysanthemum Pot, no idea where this comes from but heated up fast and no weird taste or smell. read more

I am really happy to have found this place for fun treats that I cannot find easily elsewhere. I became a huge fan of mochi when I was a student and used to have it on my frozen yogurt, but this is the first place I have found to get it outside of there. I like to stop in on my way home from work once in a while when I am feeling snacky or just want to try something new. I have mostly tried their sweet grocery options, but have also purchased their hosin sauce among other things (finding that Walmart, despite their somewhat diverse ethnic sections, is missing basic things like hosin sauce, which can only be ordered online from them). I have even gotten my family to try some treats pretty far out of their comfort zone with only a few misses. The only issue that I have found is that the staff does not seem particularly approachable and some of the items they sell are difficult to distinguish if you dont speak the language. I have never found a rude employee, just have not been helped at all by one either. The store also packs quite a few products, which is great for selection, but makes it difficult to move past people down the aisles. read more

The best asian grocery store I've found since moving to Champaign. Is clean, has good prices, and boasts an impressive selection of the stuff I want. Lots of Japanese and Korean as far as selection goes, which is good because I mainly prepare Japanese food at my house and Am-ko's selection was a little less than what I was used to coming from Chicago and it's slew of amazingly impressive stores. Green Onion carried several items that I'd been unable to find at the other CU asian stores. COULD use a better selection of produce, but what they did have was very high quality. read more

The owner of this clean Asian grocery store is very friendly. I normally shop there once every month with 100-200 purchase. The categories of the Asian food are very diversified. I can have Japanese, Korean and Chinese selection there. Especially its Korea. Food supply (like Korean cold noodle, kimchi, Korean pancake and Korean dumplings) is pretty much like H Mart in Chicago. For the price, I guess it is a little higher than Chicago area, but within the acceptable range. Anyway, my routine Asian food shopping place. Why Asian food? This place is organized and clean. They have mainly Korean items but Japanese and Chinese items as well. Great selection of produce and frozen items, super fresh and with good prices. They also have fesh pre-made items you can take for lunch or a snack such as seaweed salad or kimchi, and a nice meat case with hard to find items such as pork/beef for shabu shabu and saba. Yes! Finally a place with well made daifuku! They carry a brand that has many 5 ingredients and no artificial colors I have to watch for. Absolutely love that! They also carry a nice selection of home made kimchi. Kkakdugi is one of my favorites so I'll have to check and see if they have any next time I'm in. My only complaint is that they're on the opposite side of town from where I live so it's a bit difficult to get over there unless I'm collecting special ingredients for a meal. read more

We shop at The Green Onion several times a year, driving from Springfield. They have most of the Korean food items we want and even though prices are a but higher than Am-Ko, the cleanliness of the store and the friendliness of the staff keep us coming back. The only place I refuse to go is Am-Ko, I shiver whenever I think about it. I had a horrible experience with the owner. I will never shop there again. We love the Green Onion! We have been coming here for many years and have always found the food to be excellent and the service is almost always very good! I was surprised to see bad reviews here, also the margaritas are great and the salsa is made fresh every day! The ambience is not great, but the taste of the food far overwhelms any lack of decor. This is a great place to go with your family it is casual and tasty and the price is right! Also the happy hours are really fun and great deals for an inexpensive date. This market offered a reasonable selection of Japanese and Korean food. They had a very nice variety of noodles, grain, rice, and kitchen utensils. They offered a large selection of bulk rice for a pretty cheap price. The produce section was not that extensive but what they had was pretty fresh and well-priced. They did however have what appeared to be large amount of junk food. A lot of the products they sell are a bit more expensive than other stores in town, but that is the price you pay for shopping in a well-lit, clean environment. read more
