And now it is me, my boyfriend of now 15 years, & our beautiful, amazing 5 year old daughter!! We LOVE living here! It's calm & quiet even considering we are a few feet away from the interstate & less than a 1/2 mike away from the train tracks... The residents are so nice and respectful of their neighbors. It's ESPECIALLY amazing living here the last few years since Mrs. Karen (our landlord/property manager) took over. Before her there was constant issues regarding the previous (several) landlords/property managers such as them being rude & not caring about us residents to hearingbrumors of one of them stealing money somehow... But none of those issues exsist now that Mrs. Karen is watching over us. She is the sweetest, most kind hearted person you will EVER meet!! When I say she treats us like family.. I mean that 100%. She goes ABOVE & BEYOND for ALL the residents (regardless if you just moved in or if you're like us who have been here 13 years... everyone gets the same respect & live shown to them by her). I HIGHLY recommend looking into Audubon Gates Apartments if you're looking for somewhere that's safe, kid friendly, & all around just a great place to live & a great little community to be apart of!!!

TERMITES, FUNGUS, HORRIBLE STAFF. This place is an absolute nightmare. We've lived here for 7…read moremonths and have had nothing but problems. The first month we moved in we had a fungal bloom come through the drywall in our bathroom. All they did was send maintenance to cut what they could see and put spackle over the hole. There's is no telling how extensive the damage is behind our wall. In February our entire unit flooded from their washing machine malfunctioning. We called the emergency line that night and no one answered. We finally called the next morning and got through to someone. They sent out a company to use machines to remove the water from the carpet. Even though the water had reached the walls NO INSPECTION WAS PERFORMED TO ENSURE MOLD HAD NOT DEVELOPED. We alerted the management two weeks ago that we had a termite infestation in our walls when we noticed we had new pin-sized holes in our walls. The management complete wrote us off and said it was simply swarmers that got inside even though we sent them pictures of them actively crawling through the holes in the wall. They finally managed to send a pest control worker out who only treated the outer wall and told us he didn't know what he was doing, had only worked for the company for a month, and could not treat the inside which was our biggest problem. After many complaints they finally sent another pest agent out to treat the inside. All during this we continued to tell them they were still coming into our unit by our window. They finally opened the wall up to find extensive damage to the studs in our wall from the termites. We currently have an open wall in our wall with exposed rotted wood with no baseboard. At the moment 1st lake has done nothing for us even though we can not occupy our unit due to our personal safety concerns. We refuse to share our bedroom with bugs especially when they are STILL COMING IN and have an open hole in our wall now. They have not offered us another place to live and have been extremely difficult to communicate with. We have told them we simply want to move out of our unit but they do not care about their residents. At the moment they are insisting we remain in the unit while they undergo extensive structural repairs to a load bearing wall--all of which I'm sure they are doing without permit. We already spoke with a license contractor and a local building inspector that both said we should not be occupying the unit while such an extensive repair is being completed. We are pretty sure from the damage we've seen in our walls that it has spread to other units as well. This community is horrible, termite infested, uncommunicative, and fails to care about the health and safety of it's residents. DO NOT LIVE HERE!!

Like any apartment complex with money to be made they'll bill you on any and everything. Be sure to document as things happen. Our apartment had a ventilation issue that created black staining under every door with carpet, we didn't record or note it therefore we were responsible for miraculously staining every carpet in the exact same way.... The complex requires a carpet cleaning before you move out. Be sure to do the cleaning and observe for yourself. Ours was done after moving out so what do you know, all of our carpet couldn't be cleaned and needed replacing even though it was only a year old and no shoes were worn, food eaten, etc. on the carpet. They even took photos claiming spots under beds and book shelves that was never trafficked was damaged.... Moral of the story take control if you plan on living here because they'll take full advantage of you when leave. Seriously, I'd just live in one of the other gated complexes, friends of mine that did never encountered the problems that retreat had to offer. Edit: If you are military be extra cautious. If you meet this criteria you are in a situation where the apartment can charge you around $1K, as we were including security deposit, and you will be unable to contest, even with proof or basic understanding of "carpet damage". You will be unable to challenge due to basic military demands keeping you in your new location and coupled with COVID-19 restraints on military the staff will have you backed into a corner legally where your only option is to pay.
