There are ton of covered pavilions throughout the park to make it a great location for social gatherings. Multiple lakes and grazing buffalo right next to the road as you drive up! But what makes this park absolutely amazing is the disk golf course. This is one of the best disk golf courses I have ever played!! Each hole is unique with its own degree of challenge. The course is well laid out and clearly marked and you get a fantastic walk in while moving through the course. Did 9 holes and still walked 3 miles! One of the absolutely best things to do in Clovis and it's absolutely free! Park is located about 10 minutes outside of town.

Amarillo, Texas: 100 miles (160 KM) due North east of. Amarillo is the closest big town. Roswell, New Mexico: 110 miles (180 KM) due South West. Roswell is a great staging point for adventures, traveling & UFO related. Costs: Free Hours: 24/7 as it is a community park. Nearby Attractions: Amarillo has many attractions. The Cadillac Ranch (art) and the Big Texan Steakhouse to note. Fort Sumner is a few minutes away with the "official" Billy the Kid's gravesite along with some other Wild West & Manifest Destiny activities. Roswell is the capitol for UFO phenomena, but an ideal base to explore the Carlsbad Caverns, Historic NM town of Lincoln/Ruidoso, Alamogordo & the Nuke Bomb Testing Facilities (White Sands). The park has a bunch of military related weapons highlighted by the F-111 (Fighter Plane), tanks, placards, memorial for locals and the such. It's just a nice place to rest, stretch legs, walk around if you are the area. Why you would come out here is anyone's guess since it's a good detour from I-40. I visited the refuge in early January of 2011, to see the sandhill cranes. They have about 17,500…read morethis year according to their website, but I only saw a few hundred from a distance. We hiked across Pauls Lake, one of the salty and pretty much entirely dry (at this point) playa lakes. There are 3 main playa lakes, Goose, White, and Pauls. Bring binoculars. I also saw some Western Meadowlarks, a large raptor of some kind (about 2 feet long), American Kestrels, and prairie dogs. You can hike on pretty much the entire preserve, but there is cactus and rattlesnakes, although we didn't see any snakes. They have a picnic and tent camping area, and there are no fees to get into the park. They have a sign-in point at the headquarters, but there weren't any people there. There are chemical toilets at the picnic area and near Pauls Lake, which is a little farther down the highway. There also was another scenic overlook/picnic area on the very end of the preserve, which you can enter off the highway. Scattered around the property are signs that talk about points of interest with visitors. Overall I enjoyed the wild and lonely scenery but didn't see too much wildlife. Maybe because it was kind of cold out. The premises appeared well cared-for by the refuge staff, we saw them repairing a bridge on the picnic area trail. There also were various burned areas of grass which they do to remove undesirable plants and to maintain the prairie ecosystem. If you visit I recommend sturdy shoes, binoculars, a picnic lunch (there are no nearby eateries), and to print a map beforehand. There was one available online but I didn't see any in the lobby area.

There's also a water dish for your doggie to drink out of which people who come here replenish quite often. My 2 star dock is simply because there is no one from the city monitoring this place to pick up poop and watch for unvaccinated animals. Rules are posted and not all owners pick up after their dogs. Sometimes when I come here I also find owners bringing puppies that are only a couple weeks old that haven't been vaccinated which is a health hazard to all the other dogs. Lots of unpicked up poop, and unvaccinated dogs = not always safe place to bring your dog.

I like that this is available as I have a 70 pound dog who is not mean, but has a hard time understanding how little dogs play. The park is also very clean and tidy. They do a great job providing bags and such to help with the clean up. We went early in the morning and there were very few people there, so I don't really have a good gauge on the types of dogs who hang out there, but overall it's a great little park.

i was visiting Amarillo for a week and needed to get my runs in while training for a marathon and…read moreone of the closest trails and parks was Medi Park on the north side of town in the medical district. There's a large playground, the Amarillo Botanical Garden next door and a 1 mile loop around the pond which made it easy to do my runs. I was warned about the geese infestation and the possibility of geese poop on the trail. I didn't see any while I was visiting, but I thought that was worth noting. There's an extended part of the trail but you have to cross traffic for it, so the one mile loop worked best for me. A lot of people were walking the trail through my three visits, a school bus was there with kids in the playground and on Saturday plenty of people were fishing in the pond. A really great and well maintained park!

There were lots of families at the playground and everyone seemed very inclusive. This park is near the Don Harrington Discovery center and they had a fairly large tortoise living on the outside premises. It was neat. I would like to come back to visit that museum. All-in-all .... This park was the best part of Amarillo on this stop through.
