Reasonable Pub, but the food is TERRIBLE. its a shame because there are very few places on the north shore, that is the only reason they get away with it. ordered a medium rare steak, and whilst it did come out medium rare, it was the dryest, toughest steak I have eaten at a pub. The Greengate Hotel in Killara is one of Sydney's great pubs. Originally opened in 1832, this heritage listed site is a must visit. A top spot to enjoy a beverage, with many different spaces to suit any occasion. The hotel includes a number of bar areas and outdoor spaces, perfect for those sunny days and you can even bring your dog. The Greengate Hotel is also home to one of our favourite pub dining spots, the Greengate Terrace.The Greengate Terrace is an elegant and stylish dining space, with the charm of the old building retained. The room is filled with natural light from the many windows and doors that look out to the terrace, which also has plenty of seating. The service is more upmarket than most pubs, with table service on offer, which is a refreshing change from buzzer service you usually see at a pub. There is also a fully stocked bar with some enticing cocktails and a quality wine list, craft beer and premium spirits.The food at Greengate Terrace is also of a high standard, utilising quality produce which is enhanced by the culinary skills of the kitchen staff.The starters are simple with the natural ingredients highlighted. The half dozen Sydney Rock Oysters are plump, with a creamy texture and these were very enjoyable, served fresh with a champagne vinaigrette which provided a nice contrast.There are are a number of small plates that can be shared if you so please. The trio of Mooloolaba grilled butterflied king prawns with butter and herbs were the pick of the day, a good size and possessing a nice charred seafood flavour. For a vegetarian option, the asparagus dish is refreshing. With the asparagus both grilled and shaved, served with slithers of grapefruit, rocket and tonburi (which is known as Japanese field caviar). This dish is prepared super well, with a pretty plating.When ordering mains, there are plenty of pub classics to choose from like fish and chips, pasta, roast chicken breast, slow cooked lamb, pan fried Barramundi and a few different cuts of steak. It is much classier than you often find in a pub. We enjoyed the beautiful Barramundi which had a crispy skin flaky flesh, served with broccolini and a silky kimizu, a Japanese egg and vinegar sauce, similar to bernaise. The Barramundi was simple, yet elegant and perfectly prepared. We also ordered the 5+ Wagyu rump from the specials menu, the steak cooked as ordered at medium rare and it melted in the mouth. This was served with french fries and an incredibly tasty truffle butter. Definitely one of the better steaks we have enjoyed. There are also a range of sides and enticing desserts if you are super hungry.We really enjoyed our visit to the Greengate, it is definitely on our return list. This is big fortress of a pub. I wouldn't want to storm this place. You'd be dropping like flies, it's colossal and squat and built like a brick $hithouse, if that $hithouse belonged to a frost giant. No, better to come and drink here and forget your dreams of conquest. There is simply no finer place to be on the North Shore than at the outside tables nursing a frosty cold schooner of beer when it's mid-afternoon and you've just won cricket and oh look, the waitress is bringing over those little fryer cages of hot chips and aoli. Deliiiiightful. There's pool tables and more bars inside but you could be in any old pub once you're indoors. No, better to stay outside and suck in that sweet, sweet Vitamin D. read more

There's a lot to do and see at the Greengate Hotel. Uni nights are on Wednesday evenings and is typically the biggest night out the Greengate. A young North Shore crowd generally populate the front bar which has pool tables and live entertainment. Trivia is also a major attraction for some. If you are looking for a function room, the Greengate has several ones upstairs. The function room food is simply divine, ranging from sushi to duck rolls, mini pizza, fish and chips, Thai beef salad and chicken skewers. The food at the Greengate is exceptional. Sample either the pub food in the main bar or gourmet delights in the award winning Portico restaurant (see Portico review for more information). The pub meals are available in the front bar only. The chicken snitzel is a favourite of many patrons. The food service is quick at the front bar but can be a little slow at Portico. The drinks are reasonably priced with discounted drinks such as champagne available on Wednesday evenings. The Greengate is great for group bookings and has held many reunions, engagement parties, 21sts and 30th birthdays over time. It is one of our favourite family restaurants- we are only too happy to visit time and time again! There is plenty of outdoor seating with smoking areas available. I've done everything there is to do here: Work Xmas parties; Xmas eve; Functions; Trivia; watched live bands; dates; played pool/games; and gotten completely stonkered... more than once; It was even my local for 3 months about 10 years ago when I worked in Lindfield (yah the job didn't take). Over the years and up until my last visit in late-2014, the GG has always delivered a solid 3 stars. My fondest memory is coming here with my stepdad when I was about 8 or 9 years old. We cooked a BBQ out the back whilst he drank a few schooeys and I "helped" him punt on the horses. What a beautiful old building! Spotted on the way up to the Central coast, it held my attention long enough for us to stop of chips and drinks on the way home 2 days later. I worked here many years ago. First time I got sacked was when I called in sick on New Years Eve, well actually my buddy Steve Bingham called in pretending to be my father and saying I had been in an accident on the Gosford expressway (that is what the F3/M1 was then called). We forgot that as he also worked there his voice might be recognised. It was. Quote 'Thanks Steve - tell Andrew he's fired' Second time I was a bit exuberant after passing some exams and I threw my peas at the owner and hid below a table. A cunning plan conceived after two bottles of red wine but fatally handicapped by the suddenly clear view of the previously packed bar area that appeared the instant the peas were airbourne. Sacked again. Then I got banned from even going back there, had to do with an advert for toilet paper with a dog that was running at the time. I've been back a few times (under a general amnesty for good behaviour) for reunions, or a quick bite with mates or a quiet beer with Will. Its always going to be the same old Greenie. Try as they might its a pub and they will never get it to be anything else. I know its now got "The Highway Bar and Bistro" which was the Public Bar. It was the scene of 'krystallnacht', the night we introduced unbreakable glasses, every one of which was broken before the end of the night. Rough bar. It has tried hard to remodel itself and to some extent it has worked, although I miss cooking my own steak on the grill in the old Saloon Bar. I don't miss cleaning the damned thing. The "Portico" is nice. The food is OK, the service is not as good as it was 30 years ago - when it was me, but its still good, As ever, service is from bored students having to put up with dumb customers, we did our best and so do the new guys and girls. It's good but the gate says it all "This gate hangs well and hinders none. Refresh and pay and travel on." My rating is on the food. Such a shame, as it's my local and they have a great beer selection. Recent Ghostkeeper was fantastic, and they always have great guest taps. And you can never go wrong with Panhead from NZ. The issue is the food. I went yesterday because I missed lunch and was WFH, and Wednesday is $15 pizza day. I never had pizza here before because they are expensive for a pub at +$20 normally. I asked for a pepperoni pizza, they don't have that, so the Carnivore, their meat lovers, was suggested. I wanted a simple pepperoni, but no luck. This told me the pizzas are likely frozen and surely pre-prepared. And once I got it, it surely is frozen. Thin, flavourless, all the meat tasted the same, only touch up was some store bought BBQ sauce that they smothered across it. Day before my wife had lunch there and came home with a funny tummy. One thing a pub should do right is fish and chips. She had the same experience I previously had here, small greasy pieces of fish with stale greasy chips. Drinks only from now on. read more
