Did a refinance on my auto when I purchased a home through them. They threatened to increase my interest rate and monthly payments. When they failed to get the documentation from the State who held the title information AFTER I mailed them my title. I've had nothing but problems with GreenState Credit Union for both my personal and business accounts. Some of the major issues: I ordered business checks in person and waited over a month, only to discover that the teller had never placed the order. They didn't approve increasing my daily transfer limit to move my own money to an external account, Zelle, or even bill pay. As I write this, they are still not allowing me to move funds from my savings account to my new bank. It's ridiculous that I can't access my own money. A Masterclass in Predatory Banking I've been with this bank for nearly 20 years, and the only consistent thing they've delivered is stress, fees, and shady practices. They've made my financial life harder at every turn. Whether it's disabling autopay without telling me, ignoring direct requests to turn it back on, or stacking late fees like it's a sport. One mistake on their end cost me double a normal payment, and they took zero responsibility for it. Their overdraft system is a complete joke. Daily fees that feel less like a policy and more like punishment. It's not about helping you get back on your feet; it's about draining you while you're down. On top of that, their customer service is smug and unhelpful. They leave voicemails like they're your parent scolding you for being late with lunch money, instead of addressing the very real issues they helped create. GreenState doesn't care about its members. Full stop. After two decades of loyalty, I can honestly say they've become one of the most hostile and tone-deaf financial institutions I've ever dealt with. I would give Green State a negative star if I could. We first joined Green State (GS) in 2014 when we purchased a 2013 Honda Pilot and financed the loan through GS. We paid off the loan in full never missing a payment and we paid the loan ahead. Pleased with GS we opened checking and savings accounts with them. In 2021 we purchased a 2021 Honda CRV, we had a $15k down payment and financed the balance with GS. Again we never missed a payment and we paid the loan ahead. In May of 2023 the CRV was involved in an accident and was totaled with an outstanding loan balance of aprox $11K. Our insurance company made several attempts to get the loan payoff amount in writing and finally GS sent the insurance company an email with the information. Meanwhile Cameron from GS sends a very terse note advising us that we were responsible for any additional interest if GS didn't receive the payoff by a certain date even though GS wasn't timely in providing the information to the insurance company. We purchased a 2023 CRV at the end of June. Because of the payout from Insurance, we had a cash down payment of $28k. When seeking out financing for the remaining balance of $13k GS refused to approve the loan. The dealer couldn't believe this especially with a substantial down payment and our repayment history. We had many offers from other lenders and secured a loan at a lower interest rate and terms. Since we are in our 70's one can only wonder if this is AGE DISCRIMINATION on the part of GS. We are in the process of closing GS accounts and gladly sharing our experience with those we know. read more

Just had a terrible experience trying to open checking account at GreenState Credit Union. I called to open account on 1/16/2024. Took all the information and deposit of $55. Said they would send email with some forms I need to sign. I completed the forms that day and submitted. I received email on the 20th saying my document had been completed. On the next day (21st) i received another request for information - I had already submitted that information 5 days ago. But I resubmitted it. I received it again on the 22nd - same info requested again. I called them, asked for manager. Told her I was fed up with this repeated request for same info. She assured me they would take care of it and an I would be called back that day. No phone call was received. I called back and asked for my application to be closed. They told me it had already been closed "last week". I said no one called or emailed me about that. it can't be because of credit score - mine is over 800! I was still getting requests for same info, over and over. They said they would have someone get back to me. i said "I DON'T WANT TO EVER HEAR FROM THEM AGAIN AND HUNG UP" I wish I had read the Yelp reviews for this credit union before I applied. 61 out of 81 reviews were ONE STAR. Don't use them - they do not know how to treat a customer and obviously their processes are all screwed up and full of incompetent design! Worse experience ever! read more

By far the worst credit union in the area. Here are some of my experiences with them. I just noticed that my google review is gone and they have disabled google reviews (super sus imo): 1) My insurance carrier made an error and did not add the correct address as their "interested party" on my renewal. So GS didn't have proof of my insurance. Rather than contact me or my insurer, they placed the CPO whatever insurance on my account. I make my payments every month in the amount of $420 cash (rounding up). One day I get a call about a past due amount and am informed my car is about to get repossessed. I ask "where are all my payments going then?" They say "you have only been paying a partial amount for the last several months, as we have placed the CPO insurance which costs an extra $300 something dollars" I ask why no one at the bank tells me that there is a remaining balance each month. I had no idea and no one ever told me anything had changed. I just kept paying the same amount I had been paying for years thinking nothing of it. ANYWAY - I call my insurance and get it straightened out. I go back to GS to let them know. They say, oh - we took the balance past due FROM YOUR SAVINGS ACCOUNT (which I have for my children). I said "Ok, so you STOLE MONEY FROM MY CHILDREN TO COVER A COST I DON'T EVEN OWE YOU??!" It took several days to fix the issue and lots of calls. They returned the money to my savings and then credited back the BS insurance premiums. Part 2) Around this same time, I am house hunting. It is the middle of the market bubble in 2022. Shit is hard enough. I get preapproved for a loan and a few days later - the "Repossession / late payment" issues from GS pop up on my credit report. - Suddenly I am no longer able to get approved at several lenders. The hit on my score dropped me enough to also be ineligible for 1st time homeowner credits. I contact GS again to ask them to correct this issue, as it was an error on their part. They tell me no, it was all accurate reporting and they will not be requesting any credit reporting adjustments. I'm in a hurry to just get on with the search and get into a house as rates were rising fast. I bend over and take their BS - Costing me up to 10K is assistance and grants I SHOULD HAVE BEEN eligible for if not for the incompetence of GS. I paid my own closing costs and depleted my savings for it - Which were meant to be for home repairs. Part 3) At some point down the road, I left a google review explaining all of this. They responded and had me call them to discuss. They agreed this was all mishandled and said they would adjust my credit report to fix the issue. At this point, it was too little too late. They already cost me up to 10K with their errors, and NOW they want to make it right and fix their shit? Like give my my closing costs if you are so sorry. Anyway, today - I try to log into my account online and it is inexplicably disabled. Not locked. Disabled. The help line says I need to speak with someone in a branch. I hate this bank. My other bank is WF and GS makes them look like saints. I needed to rant. I will try not to slap the shit out of a bank teller when I storm into their place tomorrow. Wish me luck. Also - they changed their name bc they got sued for implying they were affiliated with IA University - so I am sure they scammed a bunch of college kids too. My wife was killed in a head on collision with a Mack truck in September of 23. I closed her accounts and kept $2500 in a savings and checking account. Unbeknownst to me, because they never told me (yes it's in the 14 page very fine print agreement that nobody reads) they charged me $7 a month for an inactive account. Oh they sent 12 monthly notices that my statement was available online but never once bothered to tell me I was being charged every month just for letting them use my money. They could have told me. A notice of an inactive account charge could be automatically sent but they never bothered to let me know at any time of this charge. The other reviews are right. This is not the university of iowa credit union that served and respected it's members of the past. They are now the worst kind of impersonal big mega bank anyone can imagine. I recently closed my checking account and was assured everything was taken care of, 2 months later I receive an alert from my credit monitor that Green State has placed a derogatory claim on my credit. When I called in there were 5 insufficient funds charges on the account that was supposed to be closed. Green State kept no record of my phone call or notes on the account that it was closed, even though they mailed me a check for the balance of the closed account. They now expect me to pay the charges in order to close the account. Do yourself a favor and use ANY other bank! read more

My review is based on several years of using the Rewards Mastercard program they offer. I learned after getting this Mastercard that they block a transaction outside of your normal location as a security precaution. Well, try to make a purchase with Door Dash, Uber or even Chick Fil A. These are all processed outside of Iowa. So, it will be declined. While you're hungry family waits to get this sorted out, I have to make a phone call to the customer service number on the back of the card. It takes quite a while on hold to reach someone and explain the situation. Since they do NOT have the ability to flag certain vendors as automatically ok to charge against your account, a human being has to manually watch for you to reorder your food and then accept that charge as legitimately from you. We first encountered this in the Cedar Rapids area shortly after getting the card. Before I knew that "changing the settings on my account" per a customer service represent meant they would manually eyeball it for a charge in the near future, we went on a trip out of state with only that card to travel on. How embarrassing, we tried to pay for our food, gas, etc and were denied. But, to make it worse we weren't denied all the time. I had to ask my son-in-law to pay for some things and then pay him back. Since then we picked up a national Visa card where I have many years of travel experience. Somehow I still wanted to support a local business (GreenState) and use their card locally. So, I committed to keeping 2 cards in my wallet. Ah! The complications get worse. Fast forward a few years since switching to the GreenState rewards Mastercard. I have several bills set on autopay with the Mastercard. For some reason, GreenState decided to decline those payments this month for about 50% of the transactions. That includes electricity and cable. No more! Goodbye Greenstate. read more

This is the worst credit union I have ever worked with. I am disgusted by their horrible customer service. this is the most unwilling and most unhelpful business I have come across in my life. Credit unions are supposed to help their members not put them into a worse financial situation then they are already encountering. their tellers are rude, short, attitudes like you wouldn't believe. I also have a mortgage through them as well and my god was that a nightmare. The responsiveness of my loan officers was horrible. I have to send more than 3 before I ever received a response, they are the most unhelpful and so unresponsive it's amazing they are still in business. Do yourself a favor and stay as far as you can away from this Credit union. I have a CC with them and you can call until you are blue in the face and they will refuse to lower the rates. I have been told "They rates are what they are, Sorry I can't help you" If you have any other loans with them, they want you to do a direct deposit in savings to pay the loan instead of allowing for a 3rd party bank deposit from you're regular bank if you don't have a checking with them. horrible horrible place to get a vehicle loan through, they fail to tell you all the stipulations they have including insurance. I did not have the correct insurance they desired on my loan so instead of calling me they put an additional 8k on my loan boosting my payment well over what I could afford at the time. I called customer service which told me I had to be delinquent on my payment in order for anyone to work with me. pretty much telling me I have to mess up my perfect credit history and face repossession of my vehicle in order for anyone to help me...and this is AFTER I proved to them I had the correct insurance..I'm not the only one this has happened too either. I am also sending this statement to the car dealerships in my area..I've already talked to a couple who told me to get online and make this review..I hope this helps someone else before they get scammed as well. read more

I wouldn't recommend this bank to anyone. I have always been a supporter of credit unions because I feel they are the institutions for people. I opened an account here, since I'm building my credit, they only allowed me an "access" checking account. This is accompanied by a $5.04 monthly fee. I agreed as I have been working hard on my credit and knew it wouldn't last forever. Eventually I found out that Ascentra doesn't charge a fee to anyone due to credit ranking. Naturally, I opened an account there. When I went to GreenState to close out my account today, they kept my last $6.18 because the account hadn't been open for 6 months. They are that HARD UP for money. At least I can say I donated to a charity today, apparently this is how this bank chooses to grow, ripping people off! read more

My wife an I have been members for over 10 years. We love the rewards checking and the Platinum Mastercard programs they offer and earn you money on your balance. We obtained our original mortgage through UICCU and later refinanced through them when the rates went down a few years ago. We also utilize the services for financial planning that they offer. I do feel that on some occasions going into the bank takes a bit longer than I may have hoped but not on all or most occasions and nothing you don't experience at nearly every back. All in all we highly recommend UICCU and appreciate the services and the service we receive. read more

It's just another event of 2020, but doesn't make it any better. I was scammed through one of my posts on a group on Facebook, looking for a support animal for my anxiety/panic attacks. The following is the letter that my mom sent to our bank to try to recover our money. (GreenState Credit Union). Which, they promptly denied any protection for or even a word of sympathy for a family that has been their customer for over 40 years! Please keep an eye out for this scam and be leery what financial institutions you count on to serve your needs and protect your finances. TLDR: Scammed out of $300 on Facebook and our bank wouldn't help us recover it. Fake scammers "name" - Shawn Battle, number: 779-235-0519, Paypal address: stanleybattle99@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------ "The events leading up to the transaction and discovery as it being a scam is this: My daughter has been a search for new emotional support puppy for her generalized anxiety/panic attacks. She took to Facebook in her search, since our searches of local animal shelters had no animals that would work for us. On Facebook, she found a listing that looked perfect, advertising shi-tzu puppies for the total of $650 each, with a down payment of $300.00. The purported seller requested a down payment of 300.00 through an app called Zelle. My daughter had never heard of that app, so she agreed with them to send the down payment through PayPal (who charged the additional 9.00 fee). The rest was to be paid yesterday (November 21, 2020) when the puppy was delivered to our address. All seemed well for a few days, until yesterday morning. They messaged my daughter saying that they were at the vet with the puppy, but they needed an ADDITIONAL $300.00 before they could be on the way with the animal - to pay for a crate and "sanitizing" the puppy. Red flags went up for my daughter and she insisted on getting information about where they were, the veterinarian's name, education and experience. They delayed and argued with her about a phone call. When she finally got a call from them, it was from the same number they had been texting from, and they yelled at her for requesting the information and insisting she just send the money. When she persisted in asking questions, they hung up on her. She then called our family veterinarian's office (Edgewood Animal Hospital) and they immediately identified it as a scam, and recommended to cease the transaction. She returned to communicating with the "seller" and told them that "her vet and bank both strongly advise giving you any more money until she has the puppy. Since you refuse, please refund me". They kept repeating they needed to sanitize the puppy for health reasons and she needed to make the additional payment, that she "was wasting time and was making it hard on them." Our veterinarian told her to ask them what they meant by "sanitizing the puppy" and after they kept demanding payment again and again, they finally replied that they "use health products and disinfectants are used in the puppy to make sure its rid of any bacteria and viruses". She then just kept responding that she wasn't sending any more money and to please refund her. They refused and continued demanding more until she stopped responding and blocked the number, waiting for me to get home. So, as soon as I got home, I logged onto Greenstate Union's chat right away. The person I spoke with was Emily. I asked about my options to recover my money. I had already requested PayPal to step in and the response was negative. Emily suggested I file a dispute claim and replace my debit card. I replaced the card through her and she sent me the document to sign (which this letter accompanies). My daughter also felt very unsafe with the scammer having her phone number, so I paid $15 for her to immediately change it. My daughter logged on her Facebook to look at the original messages and realized that the profile had been deleted and the Facebook group vanished. The number that the "seller" was texting from is: 7-729-235-0519. They stated they were coming from Des Moines, but looking it up online, I see that the area code isn't assigned in North America. She does still have the entire text exchanges on her phone, but I do not know how to covert them into a file to attach to this claim. She would be able to bring her phone in and show them to who ever needs to see them, if needed." read more

I went into the bank and spoke with someone who didn't even notate my account. This is a rookie institution I don't know who their customer base is but they treat you horrible and accept no accountability for their mistakes. I made numerous attempts to speak with officers of the company and I was not allowed to speak to anybody other than a branch manager so their website their commercials their words that they advertise on their websites are all a bunch of crap. The worst customer service ever. To say these guys are worse than Wells Fargo is being kind. I have a loan with them. My payment is taken out ACH. I received a vague letter saying my loan amount went up $2000 and my monthly payment doubled. No explanation. I called 3 times. The first two people couldn't explain what the letter meant. The third guy, Cameron did figure it out. They charged me $2000 for their own insurance at over $200 a month. I got Cameron to check look into it and Allied, their company didn't have the correct lean holder down. I did receive a refund but in the meantime, over 30 days had passed. What did the credit union do? They reported me to the credit bureaus. It was their mistake and now I have to file a disputed with the credit bureaus and hope they have mercy on me. This really is the worst place I've ever banked. Needless to say, they will not be getting my home loan or any future vehicle loans. read more

Unfortunately this credit union reported me to the credit bureau after a missed auto loan payment that was missed after automatic payment was stopped without me being notified. After I changed my address, the automatic payment was no longer valid, of course without notifying me. This resulted more than 100 points drop in my credit score. I called the loan office and they couldn't care less. I was a member for 7 years without a single missed or late payment on credit card. I paid off the rest of the loan to avoid having a lien on my car with such an opportunistic bank. read more

My job is to work w/banks and credit unions to make sure liens are paid and titles are sent out to our dealerships. Green State CU is impossible! It took 5 phone calls of being on hold an average on 20 min each before someone answered just to be told they would have someone call me back. I did receive a call back the next day just to be told they forwarded the issue to their title dept. I cant call the title dept for an update, as they dont have a number to call. I can email them as that is their only communication w/the outside world apparently. I cant call back as the ONLY dept that can help me now is the title dept to which evidently no "outsider" has access to. In all my years at my position never have I encountered such ridiculousness and unprofessionalism. read more
