It is a Mississippi historic land mark and is part of history around here. As I understand it, share croppers worked all week locally and then came here to "party" sort to speak. They just remodeled the old gas station here and made it look so nice a lawyer or business man moved into part of it.

The internment camp was last to open on 6 October 1942 and the first to close on 30 June 1944…read more Nearby you can see a little of the remains of foundations through the trees to the right of the marker if you take a drive down Hwy 165. Pictures do not come out well since it looks like you are taking a picture of trees & bushes, but when you see it in person...you can clearly see what is there. Moreover, the Hospital smoke stack still stands a little further down the road as well, and that you can see as clear as day. The foundations and smokestack are on private lands and cannot be accessed. However, the historic marker offers a small parking lot and is very well kept. It may seem like it is in the middle of nowhere...but can you imagine how the people felt back then? When you stand there reading the marker, listen to the quiet...one can only imagine what it was like to be in their shoes. One day life was one way, and the next day it was completely changed forever. From what I understand, the Relocation Camp got its name from Jerome, AR since it is located nearby. However, the location of marker is actually located in Dermott, AR off Hwy-165. Do not follow the directions on Yelp or else you may end up in the wrong place and/or drive right past it. I have tried to change the pin, but have been unsuccessful. I have included a satellite map pic so you can see where it is. It is basically at the crossroads of Hwy-165 and 210, conveniently located on the corner. If you cannot bring this up, then look up Seark Sod Farm (that is the business you see in the pic with the outbuildings. It is out of the way, but if you are in the area and interested in this history...it is worth a stop.

It's peaceful here, with a small cemetery. This is a good place for quiet reflection over a picnic. The Delta Heritage Trail State Park bicycle trail runs through the eastern edge of the property. The site of this former detainment center is actually located near the hamlet of Rohwer, Arkansas. The blues is music that burns within you and if the blues had never been created, today's music would not be the same. I could almost feel the ghosts of those blues greats standing beside me as I stood at this spot. I would definitely recommend here.

Want to go somewhere really interesting that only locals know about? Find your way out to Pumpkin…read moreHill, just outside of Rison. I got to visit Pumpkin Hill with a group touring the county. A church group with several mini buses was there during my visit. This place is a diamond in the rough. First there's an old "dog trot" cabin along the road that was saved from destruction by the owners father. The cabin is livable and is replete with period furniture and objects. Second, there's train stuff. By the road are old railroad switches, signs and a passenger car. Further in near Lake Elrod is a personal car used by the president of the railroad. You can tour this car and check out the old kitchen, dining room and sleepers. Also on the property is a restored chapel that's popular with locals for weddings. There's also Lake Elrod which sweeps around the property and features several docks large enough for parties or receptions. I'd love to see Pumpkin Hill cleaned up and marketed more widely. I could see this place being a key station on a triathalon. Run in from Rison, swim the lake and then pedal off on a bicycle back to the start. Worth driving by on the old dirt road at minimum. You're in Rison already, so come on out.

While small, the museum is chock full of information about the community including information about businesses and community members contributions during WWII.

Realized that by the time the Cotton is picked and carried, and food bought at the commissaries, Chinese might as well try their hand at being the grocer owners themselves! I was whisked away by the wonderful illuminating displays and the props of what chinese grocery stores looked like back around WWII Thank you for featuring Chinese men of the Delta who were Vets! Thanks for educating me about what my own father's livelihood may have looked like every summer he took the Greyhound to help his paternal relatives out during his summers off from med school . This was the alma mater of a good friend's older sis. I bet you I've seen the campus, and her own sister hasn't !! A wonder.. thank you Baldwin for bringing this library to life via your award winning documentary, Finding Cleveland. I'm a bit more whole now--& a lot more grateful for the blessings I do have.
