Our suitcases were carried to out suite while we were shown Greggan's reception, bar, reading room, (formerly fancied by C.S. Lewis and others for insporation) the dining hall, the art gallery hallways, and of course, our elegant suite. Champagne was brought to the room shortly as I enjoyed a drink and a lovely bath soak before dinner. Dinner and all meals served at Gregans, were prepared with culinary mastery and served with grace and joy from the castle's hosts. I highly recommend staying awhile as you find yourself part of the Gregan's family and become lost in it's beauty and ambiance.

Full Irish breakfast was included with our stay and was a lovely combination of self serve meats, cheeses, yogurts, pastries, fruit, granola, breads and juices plus, made to order items off the menu. Everything made in house or sourced from small local farms and producers. So, here's the shocker ...this is not a castle, it's more of a country house/estate but it is warm, cozy, inviting, and just lovely in ways a castle just couldn't be anyway. Fires in the fireplaces, little nooks and corners with comfy chairs and whimsical artwork all throughout. I would've been happy to just meander around the hotel and property for days but there is so much to see and do in the area as well. An absolute must is a Burren tour, you cannot begin to understand or appreciate the terrain in this area without learning about it firsthand. The hotel staff will happily set that up for you, we had our tour with Shane Connelly and he was as the Irish would say, a real character. He did not disappoint, the authority in the area and we enjoyed every bit of teasing he threw at us along the way, which was plentiful and great fun. If you are fragile or thin skinned don't book this one and save the good time for the rest of us! Also to note, there are two cats that live in the hotel and are given free range in specific public areas. They happily doze in the bar by the fire, oversee you playing cards or doing a puzzle and will occasionally enjoy your lap, if invited. So if you don't like cats please don't book. I travelled with someone that is allergic to cats and wasn't bothered at all but that may not be everyone's experience. I found the rescue donkeys, horse and cats to be a perfect addition to a charming property.

The beds were very comfortable. Unfortunately, the water in the shower was unpredictable and it was usually cold with a blast of scalding hot water every now and then; however, this did seem to be a trend at most European hotels. When we checked in the kind lady at the reception desk spent time telling us about the hotel, things to see and do in the area, and showed us to our room. The breakfast room was comfortable and the food was good and filling. The service was very, very slow. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend my friends to stay as well.

When you enter the main door, first impressions are that you've let yourself in for a 3 star rating or even less stay at this hotel. But don't be fooled by the need for a good upgrade, a lick of paint or even leveling some sloping floors! - it all adds to the charm of Hyland's and would probably be an entirely different place if it was modernised. The staff, while lacking in some managerial direction in times, were, on the whole really friendly and helpful and went out of their way to be as attentive as possible even during the peak busy times. Breakfast was amazing with a huge choice and absolutely tons of food - but certainly needed before heading off for a long days walk on the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and surrounding areas. Absolutely delicious freshly made brown bread - almost hot from the oven - all hot courses at breakfast were ordered and served by the waiting staff, while fresh fruit and cereals were on the self-service table. We had a truly excellent dinner on our first night, with a huge choice for each course and again large portions, but very nicely presented. Parking is available at a very narrow entrance just as you pass the front of the hotel on the left. WiFi is only available downstairs in the mainly lobby or bar area which is a bit of a nuisance. I would highly recommend this wonderful homely hotel which is right in the heart of the gorgeous village of Ballyvaughan - with lots of other nice pubs, restaurants, tea rooms and Cafes on its doorstep, not to mind the wonderful location as a hub for walking as I've already outlined above.

From the small back deck you can look over this town all the way to the high cliffs that drop into the ocean, creating picturesque views of the orange, red and pink sunset. They were personally acquainted with the entire area and gave us honest recommendations for spending our days there. We were able to see the Cliffs without crowds because of their directions. We then had the perfect dinner of local food at Roadford House where we walked along stonewalls past cows, horses, and sheep to the intimate dining room overlooking pastures. We ended the night by enjoying local music at O'Connor's Pub just a minute walk from the Sea View. We would highly recommend staying at the Sea View for at least a few nights on your trip to Ireland.
