We didn't know this bakery/cafe place existed until last Saturday when we turned up at a food and…read morecider festival in Armagh city centre. We bought some fabulous North Irish Brie style cheese, magnificent local gin and a dozen rhubarb & honey cider at the festival. There were a number of talks through the day as part of the festival and the one that we attended had a cheese-maker (blessed are the cheese-makers) a cider maker (who says he is still trying to perfect apple brandy) and a chef from the Yellow door. We made a point of making the 25 mile journey to try the food in this place today. It's unremarkably located down a nondescript side street. All three of us chose the prawn on wheaten bread and it tasted superb. We were all delighted with our food. I opted for the soup & sandwich and opted for celeriac & parsnip and it was really superb too. Service was also very good but the young chap forgot to bring me a knife & fork. When I went to pay the bill I decided to try some of the takeaway food - I opted for sausage rolls and chocolate eclairs. The sausage rolls and eclairs became supper tonight. They tasted quite good, and were a decent portion size but I'd have preferred had they been better seasoned. The eclairs tasted rotten - really shockingly bad compared to everything else. I'm leaving my review at five star as everything else was so very good but I can't figure how a place that's so good with a great chef can produce something so bad.

From…read morethe outside it looks small, and I was concerned it wouldn't have enough seating space, but do not be fooled! There is a beautiful outdoor seating area that's been really well landscaped and put together. Lots to look at while you wait for your coffee. There is also a lovely bright converted upstairs with lots of seating and some comfortable sofas to boot. I really love the decor here. It's country style, but fresh and clean. It's a pleasure to dine here. Their menu has a really good selection of eats from sandwiches to full cooked lasagnas, you won't be left wanting. I decided to go with the Tuna Melt. Other members of my party also opted for sandwiches, the club sandwich looking particularly lovely. While I enjoyed my tuna melt, I was expecting a little better. The melt looked great on the plate (see attached picture) but looked more like mini pizzas to me. I think next time I'll be sure to ask for it as a sandwich instead. The club sandwich looked fantastic and the portions are excellent value for money. It would be a really great rival spot to the nearby Bective for evening food. I can only imagine their upstairs looking super romantic with candles and fairy lights. Why should you dine here? Support local businesses! The food is excellent value, the surroundings are wonderful and the staff are absolutely lovely. I'm looking forward to giving this place another try very very soon.

Unlike most other city centre locations they don't mess around with hot sandwiches or paninis etc.. They keep it simple by offering an unreal selection of high quality fresh fillings and salads. The portion sizes are ridiculous (in a good way) they pile so much in it's hard to see how they make any money! My personal fav it's their club sandwich, this easily the biggest sandwich you can buy in Belfast, it's costs just over a fiver but would easily do two people. Along side the quality produce and massive portions the service is second to none. Bob and Christine run it and their banter alone is worth a visit, a nice touch is also the fact they give you a free apple with every sandwich for a healthy desert.

Then I realised that all salads are free and they fairly fill up the sandwiches and salad bowls look immense. They don't do toasties or hot food. All food is extremely fresh and you can see them chopping up all the vegetables behind, and the chicken is freshly cooked chicken breast not pre-cut frozen bags. Family run friendly business, and great to see these still exist and are going strong. You even get a wee bag of harbio on leaving - be warned he doesn't let you leave unless you take one!!

Vegetarian café with great food and ambiance (4.5/5 Green Stars)…read more We stopped here en route to Carlingford on a friend's recommendation and all three of us were very happy we did. The place is lovely - the café is filled with light and plants and the surroundings are beautiful. Mum is a picky eater but she relished the mushroom quiche and finished the entire piece even though it was huge! (Seriously - about three times the size of portions elsewhere.) My brother loved his herbed rice bowl and I liked the organic porridge with fruit and the pistachio plum cake. The only kink was that several items arrived much later than the food - the coffees, bread, and honey for my porridge (I had already finished my porridge by then). The store is filled with great stuff - fresh fruit and veg, and a good selection of some of the most ethical products. Weirdly, the Strandfield website contains no info other than an address, so you have to rely on reviews to get info in advance. The lunch menu is mostly comprised of sourdough pizza, salads (including a quinoa bowl and herbed rice bowl), and sandwiches - see menu photo. There are also lots of bakery items, including freshly baked scones, cakes and wheaten bread (which was really good - I bought one to take home). I'm giving Strandfield café 4.5 out of 5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, for these reasons: · I didn't actually notice at the time but the menu is 100% vegetarian! · Strandfield uses free range eggs from their own farm. · My porridge was made with organic oats · Flowers and plants in the café come from Stranfield's own nursery · The grocer sources local and organic fruits and vegetables along free range eggs, and organic health foods · The store stocks a really good selection of ethical goods - I could do most of my shopping here if I lived here. · Strandfield would benefit from providing more info (on the website or menu) on ingredient sourcing.

That's a bold statement, isn't it? Forget about Starbucks and all that nonsense... When it comes to a good coffee, love in preparation is what matters. Love. Not firing out 3000 lattes per hour. You'll normally find me here, just either side of the lunchtime rush (there seem to be a load of solicitors nearby) enjoying a sandwich or salad (and a latté, of course) in nice, genuinely lovely surroundings. It does a lovely lunch menu. It is strange that there are not more little places like this around Belfast, little locally owned cafes and it is unfortunate that this is not so. The best meal I have ever had here has to be their B.L.T sandwich. It is one of the best sandwiches I have ever. Made on brown rye bread and made with freshly made bacon it was spectacular. There soups are often pretty good as well. A worthwhile little place to stop in if you are ever hungry!
