The location was great, and the house itself is beautifully restored. The rooms are quite large and the beds are very comfy. The breakfasts were very good, as well as the dinners which we had arranged separately (not included by default but as the facility does large events, they can provide dinners if you plan in advance). The bedrooms do not all have bathrooms: depending on the room(s) booked, you may have a bathroom connecting to another bedroom, or accessed from a hallway; we were lucky enough to book the one room that had an en-suite bathroom all to itself. Since the rest of the group we were travelling with booked all the other rooms, the shared bathrooms were not an issue, though I could see not wanting to share a connected bath with strangers (I'd have less of a problem sharing the hallway bath). The location is just a couple of blocks from several restaurants and about a half mile from a grocery store. It's not too far from a number of local sights including a fantastic sculpture garden. It's a short drive from several border crossings if you plan to visit some of the southern Quebec towns. The living room / parlor / entryway and the covered front porch were nice places to hang out with our friends. We were allowed to have our own snacks and non-alcoholic beverages there (alcoholic drinks had to be purchased from the owner, due to licensing rules). The rooms do not have TVs or in-room phones - this being a B&B versus a chain hotel, I did not expect them to. The disadvantages, such as they are, are quite minor. The house fronts onto the town's Main Street, which gets a fair bit of traffic. This means that when relaxing on the porch, our conversation occasionally got drowned out. We could also hear the noise from our room, which overlooked the porch. It wasn't a problem at night - either the traffic died down, or the bed was too comfortable and we fell asleep too fast! If mobility is an issue: there are several steps to get up to the front door, and all the bedrooms are on the second floor; there is no wheelchair access to the second floor.

Our family had all the rooms booked in the house, we bought some bottles of wine and cheese and all hung out together in the living room. Apparently we were not supposed to do that. The owner was very rude. B&B always have a common room for socializing. We cleaned up after ourselves. We were not loud. Everyone was in bed by 11:30. It was ridiculous. The first time my step mom met the owner, she walked into the home around 8pm and the owner looked at her and said "who are you, this is my house?" My step mom, shaken... answered "I am a guest. I have been here since Friday" The owner said "Well, I realize that!" Just really rude. A few days before we arrived I called and spoke to the owner and asked if there was room for an air mattress on the floor in our room because our two teens were coming. She said that 2 of the rooms had room for an air mattress. The night before we left she charged me $75.00 a night for my son. He slept in the TV room. No bedroom, no bedding. I guess we shouldn't have let him sleep in there, but when we had the entire house booked with our family we figured it was ok. I gave him a blanket and pillow from our truck. Then after I found out that my Aunt had paid her $15.00 a night for a cot for one of my kids. We never used a cot. The owner told me that the room we booked was just for the two adults. I asked her about when I called a few days before arrival about my two teens, she didn't say anything. We spent $75.00 a night for our room. We had a bed, bath, bedding. To charge $75.00 a night for my kid is ridiculous! She also said we booked the rooms, not the house. We shouldn't be in the livingroom. So the final night 8 of us crowded into my cousins room and ate McDonalds and hung out together. Crazy. My cousin had called ahead to make sure the house had wifi and a tv available to watch the Jays games. The owner told him yes. One night we got home to the house just before the baseball game started and my dad walked into the TV room to put on the game. There was an elderly lady in there. the owner said "that's my Mom. When she is here that is her room." Then she should have more than one TV! The owner was just not nice. Not friendly. Rude and mean. You don't treat people like that. Not your guests! The first night we all LOVED the place. We were planning on booking the entire house again next year for our cousins wedding. But not now. We won't go back. It's too bad because the house was conveniently located. Clean and comfy. We won't be giving her anymore money.

With the dismal and abominably warm winter New England has had in 2022-2023 ski season, we decided to go as far north as we could without crossing the border with Canada, so we lodged and had a superb weekend at Jay Peak, VT. In addition, one of my college classmates and Air Force career colleagues lives in nearby Montgomery Center, so he recommended the Black Lantern and it was one of the best recommendations ever. First of all, the history. Montgomery VT has the most covered bridges in a single town jurisdiction in the US. The area had a role to play in the War of Independence, when construction on the Bailey-Hazen Military Road to Hazen Notch began in 1777 as a way for the Continental Army to invade Quebec. Hazen's Notch Road begins a few blocks from the Black Lantern. The Inn was built in 1803 and remained as an Inn until it closed down in 2015. A group of concerned citizens bought the historic property, remodeled it, bought another building to expand the business, and reopened it in 2018. Its six rooms in the historic lodge and the four suites in the annex, allow for vacationers to stay in the historic town with close proximity to Jay Peak. But this review is for the dining. The truly fine dining offered here. We made reservations and they were honored on the spot, considering the restaurant was certainly busy. The beautiful, cozy and early American decor matched the ambiance and persona of the place. We got together with our friends and were seated in a wonderful location with privacy. The Black Lantern has joined into the farm to table movement and it shows in the amazing, fresh and abundant food available at the venue. Their beef and pork come from a local natural farm a few miles away. So does their lamb, coming from a local farmer. Their chicken is local. Their cheeses are from several Vermont producers including the ubiquitous Cabot Cheese, but also the Boucher Family Farm, the Jasper Hill Farm and the Vermont Creamery. Fresh vegetables come from nearby sources. The local and fresh sourcing of their food shows in the quality and taste of everything on the menu. And then there's their beers.... Local breweries and micros make an extensive part of their menu. Burlington's Fiddlehead, Zero Gravity and Queen City, St Alban's 14th Star beer, and Essex's First Republic. Their ciders are sourced from three locations in Vermont and even they carry wine from local producers. And their coffee is fair trade certified and roasted in town by Big Jay Roasters. The meal was impressive. We started the evening with Fried Yuca infused with truffle oil - succulent, and their Fried Brussel Sprouts that came encrusted with bacon, Gorgonzola and Parmesan cheeses. Crispy, tasty, superb. Then the salads for everyone. Fresh, crispy, beautiful. And it was time for main courses. I had their Chicken Curry stew which turned out delicious. Two of us had the lobster ravioli, made on the premises and as one of our group said, "heavy on the lobster" with not much filler. And then the steaks. About a pound and a half, perfectly seared with marbled pink inside. Truly amazing. Sadly, we had no room for dessert. With amazingly generous portions and two shared appetizers, we were stuffed. We had stayed here mid week during the middle of our vacation throughout Vermont and Canada and this place was by far our favorite part of our vacation! Very beautiful and relaxing environment. Before booking the room, I was shopping around a bit and they recommended a few other places in Montgomery Village that were much cheaper, however the MHI was one of the few places that allowed booking for one night even though the cost was slightly higher. We arrived Sat morning to pick up the vouchers for Jay Peak and we were able to check in. The room was clean with the most comfortable linens and check this out! robes. Oh and there is also a hot tub so don't forget to bring your swimsuit. The breakfast was delicious. The menu is very creative and everything on it is home made. We had chocolate muffins with chocolate chips that were still melted, and the most yummy granola bars, that's in addition to hearty egg strata, bacon, and soy sausage. I highly recommend this inn if you are ever in the Jay Peak area. We are definitely going back. One word of advice before heading out. If you are taking I-91 north in the wintertime following a heavy snow fall, do not follow your GPS to get on Rt-58. A few miles past Rt-100, the road is not plowed and people (tourists) get stuck there all the time, including us :)
