Couldn't have been a better experience. Lovely staff, top-notch customer service, beautiful creations (rendered to your exact specifications) and very prompt delivery. As a wedding venue (I've been to two weddings here now), it is ideal. First of all the bar is as long as the room is wide so there is no chance of a backlog at the bar. There are probably 10+ stalls in the bathrooms so plenty of room there and the sound system and DJ booth are all very professional. The venue holds up to 350 people, so it's big. The head table is raised up quite high with an elegant curtain backdrop and stage lighting which makes everyone extra beautiful for photographs. The speeches are also done on the stage so you can always see the speaker. Both weddings we've been to we've been very impressed with the food and service. I believe we had chicken cordon bleu and a prime rib at both. The food really was tender, juicy and flavourful. More than I can say about many wedding venues I've been to. They have a hot table for serving things like a poutine bar or an appetizer table with warm foods. The staff also comes around with hors d'oeuvres during cocktail hour. They have a 3rd level balcony that overlooks the dance floor for bigger parties (like the student events I've been to here). Another perk to the venue: The residences that are just steps away can house guests for much cheaper than any of the local hotels. This is a great place for a wedding, corporate event, Christmas party or whatever else you can dream up. The space is enormous! (Check out their photo gallery: http://catering.feds.ca/gallery.html)

The rate was high. of the four IHGs that I stayed on this trip (8 nights), in the US and Canada, this was the nicest and newest physical plant. I was visiting a local university as a visitor, if not as a distinguished visitor as at least a somewhat distinguished visitor. The university was covering my stay, at least. The visit went very well, and I hope to visit again, to help and be helped. I really prefer to stay at IHG and not Hilton and not Marriot, for price, for value, and for values. I stay at IHG nearly exclusively (how can they be nicer? free wifi, often free breakfasts, usually good prices. with this attitude you will make platinum level). The word from the university admins was that staying at this Holiday Inn was "not a good idea", and to stay at the Delta hotel. We went back and forth a few times by email, and I got to stay here, yea! I pushed it, I did. It took 45 min. and an enormous amount of agro and phone calls to check in. It is the type of stressful experience that can make you sick. It was not representative of Canadian nor IHG experiences that I have had. It was in the end insulting and condescending, and I nearly walked. The admins were absolutely correct, this hotel does not want to do business with that university. This was the worst checkin at a holiday inn that I have had. I thought about what would get me to stay here again. It would be an envelope of cash worth three times their nightly rack rate, fedex'd to me. Not a check, not a promise. Cash, and more than the cost. I would then buy one night. On the other hand, if you are one of several grade school skating teams from Montreal, it is your playground! and you would rate it a four. (ps I did after the trip get sick. I'm not saying it was their fault, but I am saying they did what they could)

Check-in was fast, even with the long lines. What's interesting is that the front desk has these little assorted vitamin tablets to put in your complimentary water bottle. I've never seen that before, but maybe that's what happens in a country with socialized healthcare. I totally appreciate that! The room itself was clean. The AC worked fine. I find that the air can be dry in hotel rooms, but I didn't experience any issues. The lobby has a lot of seating. The on-site restaurant had good food and great service. The staff was VERY patient with my big and loud family, which I also appreciate. The property isn't too far from shopping and restaurants. Though it was summer so the weather was nice. I can't imagine walking in the middle of winter, though I guess walking would be safer than driving for me since I'm not used to driving in the snow. The nearest grocery store is like a 5-min walk so it is doable. I recommend this Marriott property if you need a place to stay in Waterloo since it's close to restaurants, shopping, and the university.

The suites are enormous and feature a king bed and pullout sleeper sofa. There's a good sized kitchenette area that's completely stocked with dishes and cutlery plus fridge/freezer, microwave, sink and dishwasher - no cooktop. Bathroom is large and well lit and the towels are nice and large. Front desk staff were friendly and helpful. The free WiFi is very good or you have the option to upgrade if you're doing something that requires a lot of refreshes. We had no problem watching Netflix and doing work without the upgrade. Parking costs additional - $12 per night at time of review. There is a small garage and lot adjacent and a large parking area beneath the hotel. There are electric charging spaces available also. Facilities include an on-site restaurant serving breakfast and dinner. There's also an indoor pool, sauna and gym. Everything is clean and modern and the central location can't be beat - highly recommend.

To name a few of the issues we experienced: 1. about 60-70% of guests had food poisoning after the wedding. 2. We had asked for sangria to be served during the cocktail hour, they served it in a juice dispenser and completely unlabeled. Kids were drinking it until one of our family members tried it and realized it was alcoholic. 3. They were understaffed for an event of our size which meant dinner was so long! There were about 30-40 minutes between courses. It wasn't a suprise we were having a large wedding. This led to such a delay in our timeline which meant we had to rush through everything else. 4. Staff was nowhere to be found during our first dance which meant all the lights were on - they usually dim the lights, our MC's had to find them and when they couldn't they asked a guest who used to work there for help. Once we brought all of these issues to their attention, they first emailed us a whole bunch of blatant lies which I had to correct via picture proof, they finally came back and basically said they would do nothing for us. Honestly, spend your money elsewhere, you don't need that kind of stress during your wedding or after for that matter!
