Grints of Brighton is a busy small cafe just off Churchill Square. Serving a wide range of bakery fare and light lunches, it caters for both takeaway and eaters-in. Because of its location it gets pretty busy around lunchtime, so late morning is a good time to pop in for a quiet coffee - they also often add the sweet personal touch of a little homemade shortbread. If you were looking for something to really assuage your mid-morning sweet tooth there's more than enough choice in their bakery selection, including enormous triple chocolate cookies that are literally as big as your face, and have served as my lunch before now. If you go in for lunch, it's worth getting there a bit before 1pm to bag one of the three tables indoors - the outdoor tables are on something of a pedestrian thoroughfare complete with leafleteers circling like sharks, ready to fill your lap with slippery adverts for club nights. The prices are middling by average bakery standards, but rock bottom considering it's right next to Churchill Square - the bakery things are around one pound twenty for takeaway, and a cream tea is just under four pounds.
The general atmosphere of the cafe is a pleasant change from the impersonal chain stores and sterilised shopping centre in its environs, and is a refreshing break from a shopping trip in the mall. It's well worth venturing outside the air-con for this little gem, particularly the Spanish omelette. read more
