One of the great views of the Bay area is Grizzly Peak. I came to visit and my friends took me here to get a view of the Bay area as a whole and it was so amazing. The winding roads that led to the peak were definitely something this Florida gal was not ready for but it was worth the drive! Not too long but definitely a bit winding path upwards. The view is free and you can see all parts of the Bay here, especially if it's a clear day. It seems like a lot of locals (especially kids) come here to hangout. A nice spot to detour and take people from out of town to hang. read more

The view here is beautiful, both day and night. I stopped by on a whim, and it was really relaxing to just take in the scenery and think. There are plenty of spots where you can pull over, park, and walk to areas with some seating, making it a great place to unwind. read more

Grizzly Peak is located on top of the summit in Berkeley Hills behind the U.C. Berkeley campus. It's obviously named after Grizzly Bears that used to roam the area until the settlers began killing them all. I got curious one day as I've always wanted to come up here. After hiking at Marin Headlands, I finally drove up Berkeley Hills and it was well worth it. On a clear day, you can have an unobstructed view of the bay as far as your vision could see. I bet the watching the sunset from up here would be quite the spectacle, for I have yet to experience. This would be quite a spot for photographers of all levels, especially if you have a powerful camera that can zoom-in on the Bay Bridge. You can see "Karl" roll in from the Pacific as it blankets the rest of the bay. But you don't need a fancy camera just to enjoy the scenery, and it's better to experience it in person to get the full effect. There are also trails here should you decide to hike and the views are just spectacular. I've been up here a few times since just to provide some escape while maintaining social distancing. The only negative thing I have to say is the garbage that people leave behind and it irks me that they don't clean-up after themselves. But don't let the litter deter you from visiting and perhaps we can all clean-up after each and every visit. It's a gorgeous place to sit and let the time pass by as the ever-changing scenery unfolds in front of your eyes. read more

Arguably the BEST view in the Bay Area, and people definitely know that. We drove up last night to catch a sunset and there were tons of people up here doing the same thing. Folding chairs, binoculars, and lounging! All kinds of people come up here and park on the various cut outs on the side of the road to catch a glimpse of the entire Bay Area in all of it's expansive glory. I had never been up here before, despite growing up in the area, but I had heard amazing things about it. It's super close to Tilden Regional Park, and there are plenty of spots to pull over (safely!) and enjoy the view and walking trails. Incidentally, we ended up on this road because we didn't want to sit in traffic on 580 on our way back from Marin. The San Rafael bridge madness had us itching to get off the highway for a bit. And I'm so glad we did! This place is wonderful. I'd love to come back and do Tilden Regional Park as well. read more

I have not had a lot of exposure to Northern California as I am a legitimately a Central Valley chick or So Cal girl. According to my dude this place is THE place to go to see the view over San Francisco. I must say this spot is very beautiful at night and in the day time as we came out twice to see the amazing view. The day time it was perfect view of the Bay. I saw a hint of the Golden Gate Bridge due to the mist it wasn't as visible as I would like it. There was a cool looking log that I decided to have a mini photo shoot on which was fun to do. My dude had a romantic surprise at this spot in the evening for me which made this spot even more special. I definitely know I would like to come here every time I come to the NorCal. I had to hold my breath going up and down the hills as there isn't any railings for safety which makes me very nervous but my dude and his Tuner GTI Mobile handled the curves like a champ. If you want a perfect view of the Bay or do something romantic or special for SO this is definitely a magical spot. The weather was so perfect too. At night it gets packed and appears to be the spot at night as a bunch of peeps were just chilling. I loved it and cannot wait to come back! read more

Tucked away in the Berkeley Hills lay this enchanting little peak, with views of the San Francisco Bay Area that are bright by day and sparkling by night. Incredible views of the Berkeley and Oakland Hills, the Bay Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the San Francisco City lights are aplenty. It's a magnet for Sunsets and sunrises. Whether it's early morning, dusk, or nightfall, the views are all just as stunning. It's peaceful. It's liberating. It's popular. But, there are so many different places to park off to the side of the road. I love driving up the windy road to get here. It's kind of like an adrenaline rush that keeps increasing the higher that I drive up into the hills. I get little teases of the views on my way up here and there. But the real reward is when I finally make it to the top of the peak. The views make you want to just reach out and touch them. Although I do enjoy coming here during the day, my favorite time to come is during the night time. It just feels like the whole entire city is glowing. It makes it seem as though Christmas has arrived earlier than usual. It's the perfect place to relax and clear your mind. A great place to bring your significant other to catch a beautiful sunset. Yo, Grizzly Peak is pretty dope and I can't believe I waited this long to check it out! After a visit to UC Berkeley, I just entered Grizzly Peak into my GPS (which wasn't far) and away it took me up the hills. You will see a few stopping points with graffitied logs. I immediately stopped at the first log and just enjoyed the views! You can see the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance if it's a clear day! I went during sunset hour and it was kind of magical. You can continue driving up the hill and will see many more of these logs. Feel free to pullover safely and park on the side of the road. Lots of people are at the logs. Some smoking weed, some on a date with a picnic blanket, some just sitting on a log listening to music, and what have you, but all are enjoying the beautiful views of the Bay! I then entered Livermore Costco from here, and the GPS took me into Berkeley Hills! I've always wondered how to get to this area. It was fun to look at the beautiful million dollar homes tucked away in what seemed like the mountains and also see the neighborhoods open up into a more suburban setting. If I could be at this location everyday at sunset, I'd do just that! A spot where you can say absolutely nothing but feel everything. The best view I've seen of the East Bay! Both bridges and about three or four cites can be seen. A little tricky to get to an ideal location, but your GPS should help with that. Once you've arrive there are plenty of spots to choose from. People come her for all reasons, a romantic date, to enjoy a drink or smoke, or get a piece of mind for a minute. I believe it even has a few hiking trails... if you're into that. If your visiting the area, check it out at sunset. And if you live in the area I'd make it to make it a point to get here at least once a week. It will be worth it. read more

Beautiful views of the East Bay ! A short drive up from Berkeley and your are at the peak! We drove up here to see the aerial view of the bay and it was impressive. On a clear day you can see everything so clearly including the city. It is a nice spot to see the sunset too and many college kids hang around here with their dates ! It's cute. I have also been here after dinner and the city lights look fantastic too. If you have a visitor this is a great view point to show them or if you love hiking this would be a good place to do that too! I recommend this , must check it out ! read more

Beautiful up here! My boyfriend and I wanted to check out a nice romantic spot to relax on our anniversary. We came during sunset and the view exceeded our expectations! You can see the entire city and it was gorgeous. There's no hiking, you can just drive all the way up and there are various spots to park your car. We went almost to the top where there was a gigantic log bench cut into a seat to watch the view. Really peaceful. Easy to find parking. We brought our puppy with us up too. Next time we'll just need to bring some wine! read more

Love the views here! Came here a while back when visiting the bar area. We came around night time and parked where most people would where the log is at. However, there are multiple spots you can choose from depending on where you want to park. Also, it gets cold! Bring a jacket or sweater! Or cuddle with your loved ones. My favorite view in the entire Bay Area. This view holds a lot of sentimental meaning for me and I'm grateful to be able to go whenever I'm in town. Since initially finding this view back in 2011, this view has gotten EXTREMELY popular. To a point where it's super difficult to find any parking spots, which is a shame. Try to get there a bit before sunset to get a good spot and be aware that the roads are pretty curvy and narrow. read more

It used to be the best view spot in the Bay Area. But now they've blocked off all the pull outs with giant logs, and people just park on the side of the road which is so dangerous, because the pull outs were basically the only safe spot to park. Now you'll have multiple cars on the sides partially blocking the roads. It's more dangerous to drive up there now then it ever was before, I hope they move the logs eventually. read more

Grizzly peak is a place that I found on accident, I was in a rush and needed a way to get back to the freeway so waze told be to take this route. I was almost stunned by the picturesque scene that unfolded; I knew I needed to come back. Late I came back and brought my wife so that we could enjoy drive thru dinner and watch the sunset, there is nothing more you need. We were both in awe of the whole view and we could see deep into san Francisco. I can't wait till I get to go back again to take a time lapse of the sunset, it's a little more difficult since I don't live in the area anymore. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a date or just a spot to clear their mind. read more

But the more I whent the more I encountered weird things I seen white lights nd other day a old puck up truck followed me out no where it appeared as if it was hunted. Then I whent to the late nd about 3 am nd encounter a strange animal making weird noises on top of a tree .. so my recommendation if you do go up there be ready to see nd experience hunted vibes . The view up here is BEAUTIFUL! If you come to Berkley and the skies are clear, I highly recommend coming here. Although it didn't really seem like a hike per say (we just pulled up to a view point on the side of the street) the view is absolutely gorgeous overlooking Berkley and the Bay. You can see both bridges if the sky is clear enough and the view is absolutely breathtaking. The drive to the location is a long winding road getting up to the viewpoint. Be weary of roads that are very steep at the base of the peak if you are not used to driving up hills...like me. But if you're from the bay area, the streets are just like what you expect. I drive a SUV and it was really gunning it to make it up some of those hills. There are other great hikes and I believe a petting farm thing in the area. We unfortunately went far too late and they had closed before we arrived, but I think it might be fun! What a must-see view! In case you don't feel like hiking, but do want to enjoy an amazing view, Grizzly Peak is where you need to go. The drive up there is easy and fun. Make sure you bring some warm clothes, cause it tends to get chilly up there. Once you're at the top you can park at multiple spots by the roadside and enjoy a stunning view of the area. You'll be able to see the Oakland airport, Alcatraz, downtown's skyline and the Golden Gate Bridge. What I absolutely LOVE about Grizzly Peak is that it feels like you're up in the sky standing right in between in clouds. It has a magical, spooky, nature-ish feeling. Tip: If you drove up via Fish Ranch Rd, then drive back down via Grizzly Peak Blvd and turn left on Marin Ave. You'll enter a beautiful neighborhood and the straight downhill drive feels like a fun rollercoaster ride. read more

So I took my mom here the other day to celebrate a quarantine Mother's Day...we both needed some fresh air and neither one of us had been up here before. We kept our social distance (luckily found a spot where only 2 people were), but there was a portion of Grizzly Peak where it looked like people had never heard of social distancing. I'm from the bay and am surprised I've never head of this place! The view was nice, but I plan on coming back on a warmer day so I can get a clearer view. Grizzly Peak Rd gives you great views of the bay, but if you take it to the other side (cross back over Fish Ranch Rd.) and make a rgt. on Lomas Cantadas, you'll end up in Orinda and you'll have views of the rolling hills. We got lost in that neighborhood, but we had nothing else to do and eventually found Hwy 24... I'll definitely be back and will bring my out of town guests here :) read more

Who knew that the most amazing view in the East Bay could be so easily accessible? Grizzly Peak is located right off the 24 freeway, and in one or two turns you have access to the most amazing view. From the top you can see the cities of Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco, not to mention Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge. There are multiple spots on the road to pull over and set up a little picnic. I would recommend spending some time at various points, because different spots results in different perspectives, and each one is just as amazing as the last. There is a pull-off that has a long fallen log, tagged up, and on the side facing the view it has a bench cut out of it; a perfect seat for reading and enjoying nature at the same time. If you continue heading up the road there is another pull-off near Tilden Park, and this area offers some amazing trails. The trails can be tough, but you will get yet another perspective of the bay, and for the nature-nuts out there it's the perfect place to be one with it. I repeat: The trails can be tough, so I would recommend it for those who are quite adventurous. With such beautiful views, please keep the area clean. It's quite sad when you see trash just lying around. Also, please drive safe on the roads leading into the hills. They are extremely windy, and thus extremely dangerous. Grizzly Peak is my new favorite place in the Bay Area. The hippy in me loves the nature, and the horror fan in me loves the perfect setting for a slasher film; only kidding. read more

I often take the Grizzly Peak drive as a means to avoid Caldecott Tunnel traffic as I travel to and from Albany to Pleasant Hill and beyond. The fun begins at the Arlington Circle and the steep climb up Marin. Then it's over hill and over dale, and often times through the fog. It's also hard to keep your eyes on the road as several stunning views await you past the next curve. On a clear day, you can see almost everything from greater Oakland, the San Francisco Skyline and the Bay and GG Bridges. There are also a few turnouts to pause a bit or an option to drop into Tilden for more options (romantic or otherwise). You can also visit the Lawrence Hall of Science and from there, work your way down past the UC Botanical Garden, through Strawberry Canyon, and into Campus. Grizzly Peak is a great (and free) opportunity to show the Bay Area off to your out-of-town friends and be only a few minutes from a post sunset dinner. read more

I am biased toward Mt. Tam because of all the hiking, waterfalls, views from East Peak, ladder on Steep Ravine Trail, Dipsea steps etc. but one thing that it lacks is amazing views at sunset. The views from here (if you know where exactly to get an unobstructed view) are simply breathtaking. I have seen views from all over North America and Europe these last 8 months but this one is truly quite spectacular. Although great almost anytime, the best time to come is at sunset on a clear day. Things to note: -parking can be a pain; be prepared to walk along narrow roads flooded with cyclists, cars and other individuals -some of the popular lookouts are littered with trash, smell of marijuana from constant smoking from nearby cars, and are quite crowded -the roads at night are dark and narrow so be careful -there are some lookouts that are cleaner and less crowded than others (just need to look out for them) read more

Beautiful view of the bay area. The best views from Grizzly Peak Blvd can be had in the stretch between Marlborough Terrace and Fish Ranch Rd (aka Claremont Ave). It really depends on the haziness and weather, though. On a sunny day without much smog, it's gorgeous. Best time to come is either at sunset or before noon on a clear day - if it's hazy/foggy, you can't see much or get very good pictures. Before noon is best because in the morning on a non-hazy day, you can actually see that the Golden Gate Bridge is red. Later in the day, the bridge just looks dark/black (because of the shadows & sun angle). Grizzly Peak Blvd is really popular for viewing July 4th fireworks - expect a traffic jam to get there and a traffic jam afterwards as well. I personally prefer my fireworks up close & personal & deafeningly loud... but if you want to see city lights & 4-7 distant fireworks shows at once, this is the place to be. read more

Incredibly fantastic views! Our family has visited Grizzly Peak oodles of times since moving to happy California. OMG- we love CA! Over and over again, we are awe-struck by the beautiful scenery and stunning views at GP. We park, stop and ewww and ahhh at several locations along the road. This is a fantastic place to take out of state rellies (relatives) and friends. If you're a native and haven't been...go! Go soon! Wow...we once took our rellies here at dusk and heard BIG meows and semi-big meows. No- those were not typical pet kitty-cat meows; we're almost positive those were mountain kitty-cats (lions). It sounded like a mommy and her babies. Don't fret, people...the big kitties sounded like they were pretty far down the hill. We all love kitty-cats...of all sizes! Repeat... Why 5 stars? Because this is one of the best views I've ever seen. --- --- --- I love lookout points, especially in the Bay Area. I never get tired of looking at such beauty. And this one is one of the best, and also one of the highest. Maybe it's just an optical illusion, but this one seems to be higher than any other that I've seen. And for me, half the fun was the drive up to the peak. You're winding your way through this neighborhood, and all of the sudden, you're literally on top of the world. I can't recommend this enough to anyone visiting the area. And if you're a local, it's still freaking cool. We don't all have mountains in the rest of the country, so take advantage of the awesomeness in your own backyard. read more

Best view in the Bay of the Bay. I often come here just for the view. I'll park my car and look at the entire bay. It's really beautiful. Watching the sunset is also amazing. There are plenty of spots to park along the road. But depending on the time you go you are almost certain to catch a few high school students making out in their cars. (Not that I ever did that back in the day...) It's also a great drive. It's a great way to avoid 24, and especially the Caldecott during all of this construction. If you have a nice zippy car you will love taking the curves. Just beware of deer, cyclists and, well, cliffs. read more

You can't give a view like this less than 5 stars. Sure, it doesn't compare to Grand View Park but the view is amazing nonetheless. Going up the road there are several places to stop to take in the view & take pics but I was with my friend who knew where the PERFECT stop was so I lucked out. It was a GORGEOUS day so the views were super clear. You can see Berkeley below. My friend was saying that the city lights at night are so pretty but she said that the crime rate has gone up especially around night time. You can see the trash from people at night all over the place. There was Corona boxes, swisher wrappers, just straight trash. If you can look past that, the view is a sight to see. They have logs that you can sit on & just ponder. A great view right off the freeway :) read more

I've lived in the Bay Area for almost my entire life, attended school at Cal (Go Bears) and didn't know about this place until recently. Total, utter, fail. The main reason is because i usually enter Tilden via Spruce and therefore start in the middle versus at the top. This drive, starting off of the Claremont exit on 24 and up to the top of Grizzly Peak is easy to find (even for those who are "navigationally challenged"). There's a great pull-off where you can start a hike that starts off at the Grizzly Trail. Follow it to the Selby trail and you'll go past the golf course, can opt to swing through a residential neighborhood and to Lake Anza (about 2.5-3 miles). You can take Selby out further into Tilden. It can be be super muddy...but you always have the option of going around via paved roads (though watch out of cars and cyclists...the latter is far scarier). read more
