For months, I attempted to communicate regarding my son by emailing, calling, and leaving voicemails. Over that entire period, I was only able to speak with three people. The lack of response and follow-through ultimately led me to withdraw my son and place him in a private academy due to ongoing communication failures. Even the withdrawal process was unnecessarily difficult. I recently came down with the flu and was very sick, yet I was still trying to get clear and consistent information because I was being told different things by different staff members. Today, I spoke with Danielle, who stated she is the assistant to the vice principal. I was calling to ask about obtaining transcripts and a withdrawal form, which are required for my son's transfer. Earlier in the day, I was told accommodations might be made, so I waited several hours for an update before calling back. When I explained that I was sick with the flu and asked if the process could be accommodated without coming in person, Danielle became dismissive, developed an attitude, and then abruptly hung up on me, stating, "You know what, I'm not doing this," before disconnecting the call. Because she hung up on me, I immediately went to the school in person--while sick--potentially exposing others to the flu, simply to get answers. When I addressed the issue in person, I explained that it's not just what is said, but how it's said. The environment in the front office felt rude and unwelcoming, again with very few exceptions. One staff member did apologize on Danielle's behalf, which I appreciated. To be clear: even if there were frustration regarding my son--which there shouldn't be--respect is non-negotiable. Respect begets respect. Parents should not have to advocate for basic empathy, compassion, or clear communication. Had there been respectful and straightforward communication from the beginning, this entire situation could have been avoided. Unfortunately, that was not my experience at El Capitan High School

The teachers and staff truly go above and beyond to create an environment where each child feels seen, valued, and encouraged to grow. We currently have three children at the school, and each of them has had such a positive and unique experience. The balance between strong academics and character development is something we deeply appreciate. It's clear that the school is focused on nurturing the whole child, building confidence, kindness, and a genuine love for learning. One of the highlights for our family has been the musical program. Our daughters have been involved in the school musical, and it has been such a meaningful experience for them. Not only have they grown in confidence and creativity, but they've also formed friendships across different grade levels, which has been so special to see. The sense of community that comes from these programs is truly something unique. We couldn't be happier with our experience and feel lucky every day to be part of this amazing school. It's a place where children are encouraged to thrive, friendships flourish, and families feel genuinely connected.

I have only GREAT things to say about Mt. Helix Academy!!…read more My little 3rd grader has THRIVED at this school. Known to be very shy and often wouldn't participate in class, we were desperate. There wasn't ever any trouble, just no willingness to be part of school functions, class projects, and we were about to succumb to the idea that was just the way it was. No joy for school or even extra-curricular activities. Well... these teachers did amazing things!! My child is like a whole new kid. The small class sizes helped them focus on my child's needs, and the care the teachers showed made such a difference. Now my child loves school, can't wait to "try" math (it can still be hard) and is in the school play! I would have never thought this could happen. I was just looking for a place where a child could feel welcome and loved, and, oh yeah - learn. I am so very thankful that we took a chance on Mt. Helix Academy. I can't recommend them enough!

As a guest coming with the rival school, I honestly felt the racism, weird stares, side talks, and discrimination against us colored people. To put it into perspective for everyone of how WE ALL FELT AS A TEAM: Like we were part of a zoo and being looked at as some sort of out of planet beaning. To begin with they charged our varsity team $10 to play, didn't allow our cheerleaders to enter through the main football entrance and instead were told to go all the way around the back through the rocky little path with all the dirt, when we could have easy walked down the steps and around the field. As a form of hiding us. Then throughout the night when our athletes had to use the restroom, they were told to use the porta potty on the dark side of the field or stopped by Santana students saying, "hey you can't use our bathroom go over there". Even during half time when trying to check out the food options Santana students would show rude gestures and purposely blocking our athletes. I would confidently even say their refs for the night was also racist and showing lenience with Santana players but showing no mercy to our team. Not only did I see this... Also parents on the stands. As a guest there I can say I truly am disgusted with Santana High School.
