Sharing Our Experience with Groundscapes After the Tornado: Unfortunately, dealing with the aftermath of the tornado has been challenging in many ways. While it's brought out the best in some, it's also exposed the worst in others. I feel it's only right to share our experience.   For us, the most stressful part hasn't only been the tornado damage itself, but our dealings with Groundscapes. Many of you know they built a dock for us last year. When the tornado struck, it not only caused significant damage to our home, but also compromised our dock to the point where it needed to be rebuilt.   We reached out to Groundscapes for a quote to rebuild, but were shocked when they inflated the cost by over six figures, clearly taking advantage of the fact that insurance would be covering it. At the time, we believed they were the only company with the equipment needed, so my husband reluctantly gave them a large deposit to secure the job.   When I suggested our contractor, who was already on-site, could handle the demo, Groundscapes refused. They said if they didn't get the entire job, they wouldn't do any of it. This forced us to seek out alternatives and, thankfully, we found another company being used by others in the area.   We requested our deposit back, but Groundscapes claimed they had already used it to pay for a new dock frame. They presented an invoice for nearly double our deposit, saying we couldn't get the frame since they weren't doing the work, but we also owed them the full amount.   Unfortunately it got worse: after involving our lawyer, we discovered the dock frame hadn't been ordered at all, and no deposit had been paid to the manufacturer. The invoice they gave us was fake --a clear attempt to receive nearly $100,000 for something that didn't exist.   Despite months of legal efforts, Groundscapes has refused to return any of our deposit. When confronted about the false invoice, they have not denied it, but still won't refund our money.   As if going through a natural disaster isn't bad enough, having your belongings disappear or be stolen right from in front of your house, to now be taken advantage of by a local company, a neighbor, has been an incredibly frustrating and disheartening experience. I feel an obligation to let others know about this.    We have been very disappointed in the lack of integrity shown by Groundscapes. read more

I have had a terrible experience dealing with this company. After the job is done, they have no responsibility whatsoever and they charge way more than they should. They put in a dock for me and it has already fallen apart after approximately two years. I should've known when I saw how poorly the workers were acting and not cleaning up after themselves. There is nothing good to say. The quality is about as bad as it can be. Stay as far away from these guys as you can. There will be other docks that fall apart at Newport Landing. I'd suggest going with a different landscaper. Groundscapes just did not meet our expectations in any way. We had the put in a sprinkler system and landscaping done around our house in 2019. Dead plants were put in with promises to come out and replace, which was never honored - or was done with more dead plants. I told them I wanted the sprinkler to water both the lawn and the plants they were planting. That never happened and when I complained, I get, "Oh, you may have to pull a water hose around the house and water these." F no, that's what I was paying YOU to incorporate into the design! I called them to have my sprinkler winterized, but he said he'd have to get back to me when he could look at his calendar. Than never happened, and I called Heartland Landscaping - who came out within a day. However, several months later, I get an invoice from Groundscapes for the winterizing! I call, and they promise it'll be taken care of...6 months later, get another invoice! I guess they think you'll forget things and just pay it. I call them to complain about that and the dead bush's that were never replaced. "We'll have someone get back to you." Never happened and I'm stuck replacing the dead plants that I paid for, myself. BEWARE of this company as an employer if you're a woman that isn't an office worker because for no explained reason at all, I got fired. The funny part is, they didn't even have the balls to fire me directly. Supposedly, the 'owner' had a guy in HR put me off because he had to move a guy around that had been with the company for a while to run my machine. This was after my hourly pay got cut by $4 an hour to compensate Davis Bacon wages on the site I was on. I was first told that Sunday night by my direct supervisor that I was only off for a week because the guy that had to run my equipment while I was dealing with a trial (which I advised them of prior to them ever hiring me) wanted to run my machine for his final week of employment. Then I get a call around 5pm on Friday from Josh who fed me the line of crap about having to move another employee because he wasn't in an enjoyable situation so there had to be some adjustments and that meant I was being knocked out of my job. The bottom line was that I am a woman who isn't an idiot and when I asked about my pay, how dare me second guess the owner of the company about my pay. Well, I work hard for my money and I damn well expect to be paid what I am told I am going to be paid. It isn't my fault that they supposedly underbid the labor part of the job because they didn't calculate davis bacon wages. That isn't my problem....I am 99% sure this whole thing has to do with 2 major factors, first, I questioned my hourly pay and it pissed them off. Second, I am the only female they had in the field in my particular area of work. I am actually as far as I know, the only female within the company who doesn't work in the office. My supervisor was cool at first, but I feel like he should have been straight forward with me when I directly asked him if I still had a job or not. But, like most people do when backed in a corner on something wrong, he ignored me. I will definitely be reporting my missing hourly wages to DOL and inquiring as to the wrongful "lay-off" that they done to me when in all reality, the owner didn't have the balls himself to tell me he had fired me or give me a reason as to why he did. No wonder they are so desperate for workers. Maybe if they treated everyone the same, they could keep loyal and hard working employees. Not to mention the fact that this is a landscape company, not a construction company so they have ZERO knowledge about heavy equipment, large volume dirt work, or construction sites that are more than someone's backyard read more

I hired this company because they did work at my neighbors house and even though he had a couple of minor problems, I had them come over for an estimate on landscaping around our house. As the other review said it took them 2 weeks to come and give me an estimate. I had others but decided to go with Groundscapes due to what the other Project manager said. A lot of promises!!! This was in October last year, by the time they came to start the $7000.00 project. They came in after weeks of waiting for the Landscape artist finished the drawings. They completed the landscaping in one day and then the trouble started. They never showed us a sample of the dark rock we wanted but was assured it would be what we wanted. It wasn't of course so they said they would spray it so it would be dark. Four times calling them to get them to finish the work they started and I payed for. That took several weeks to complete and they missed the rock beds they put in around the 3 trees in the upper back yard. Still to this day they keep saying they will come out and spray(Nick) and this is July 2018 and still not completed. I have got nothing but "Car Salesman" talk from both the Project Managers. Do not hire them! If you do, only pay half and then wait 30 days to pay them off after they come back and finish what they started. read more

I would give them a zero if I could. Called to get an estimate to replace a very large retaining wall in our backyard. Took 2 weeks for them to return my call. Nick came out to look at the wall and it took 2 more weeks to get the estimate. The original estimate was for $21,000. It is a very big wall. After reviewing the estimate we decided to hire them. Called to let them know. I knew the bid was going to go up slightly because we picked out a more expensive stone. But Nick had told me it would only increase the bid about $1,200. Made multiple phone calls and left messages over a 3 week period asking them to come out with the adjusted estimate so we could sign a contract. Finally Nick came out with an adjusted estimate of $45,000. Said his new estimator wasn't as experienced as he thought and he was having to redo many of his bids. Really!! He was off by $24,000. The other estimates we got were for $28,000 and $32,000. How could Groundscapes be so much higher. I am quite angry and upset that we wasted so much time trying to work this out. read more

We absolutely love what Groundscapes did with our backyard project. From the very beginning they were professional, polite, and explained the process very well. GJ and Nick did an excellent job making suggestions as to how we could complete our project and get everything we wanted while still staying on budget. A couple of times they made suggestions as to how we could save money and actually get more than what we were expecting. Every one of their foremen that worked on our backyard was polite, courteous, and very professional. My neighbors even commented on how polite and professional all of their crew members were. I have recommended them to several of my friends and will continue to do so. I would not hesitate to have them complete any future projects for me. read more
