Eagerly we arrived to a lovely traditional pub with a fire and good vibes. We were led to a lovely dining room and seated. Looking around at fellow diners eating Yorkshire puddings the size of a large boat we were encouraged. They offer lamb, beef turkey or all three meats for 14.99. I chose the lamb Sunday dinner with mash, green beans, red cabbage, roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips and a massive home made Yorkshire. There was little bit of a wait but God when it arrived it was one of the best Sunday dinners I have had in a very long time. The portion was generous and we even got cheese cauliflower for the side. We ate in utter silence and every single thing on that plate was cooked to perfection. These wolfed down we ended with a cheesecake each which was also divine and a decent portion. Overall fantastic service.. great atmosphere and most importantly excellent food!!

Colleague had the fish and chips and was well received. Afraid I didn't try the beers but had a wide range or lagers and beers. Nice atmosphere in impressive 17th Century building, lots of seating and good outside patio area. I will be back to sample other things on the menu!

However, over the last six months or so there has been a massive change, with a lot of local residents choosing to avoid this establishment. The landlord is more concerned with profits, than the well being of local residents and customers, maybe he should stick to barbering than running a pub. He lets in a lot of customers who are barred from other local pubs in the village, unconcerned about the trouble they may cause. He also turns a blind eye to the obvious drug dealing/taking in these premises. The last few times I have been in this pub, there has been fights breaking out, with no door staff on to intervene. Only this Friday as one fight erupted at the rear, other fights started to break out, resulting in one person being randomly head butted and knocked out completely. The only person who seemed to do anything about it was the barman, Gregg, who stopped the fight. As a concerned resident of Gee Cross village, I will no longer be drinking in here, and will also be making complaints to licensing authorities. I would like to point out that this in no way is a review of the restaurant, which has always been superb, but this is a review of the bar.

The actual pub itself is a lovely little place, really traditional setting Lowish ceilings lots of stained wood panels and beams, it is the kinda small local stereotype, the beers on tap are a standard affair with a few ales. Again I've not eaten here (this seems to be a theme of my reviews I really should eat more) so I can't comment further here. Sadly I really do feel the price lets this place down for a local, and let's be clear I happily pay prices for awesome beer the PSBH being a prime piece of evidence, if the beer warrants the price or if I'm in a premium location like the centre of a city. Unless someone else brings me here or if like tonight I'm here because a mates band is playing, I'll be elsewhere. The staff I will only give partial review on I've not been here enough, disinterested to the degree of ignoring you even when there is no one else to serve at the bar, and a bit bad at pouring and not spilling while getting it to you. The place from when I've been there has however always been at least half full so it must be doing something right

The decor is comfortable, albeit a little jaded. But maybe now a new crew are in, this will be something on their list of things to improve. There are a good selection of ales, beers and drinks - at a reasonable price. There are bar snacks, as well as a main menu. However, I have not eaten in this establishment, since it has been taken over. There is room for parking and there is also, an area, where children can play safely. You can choose to sit in the bar area, or in the conservatory.

Feel embarrassed to say I have never been/heard of it before however to make up for this I shall be returning stat with all my friends, especially when the new menu is completed and launched! Becky the new head chef has come from working at The Living Room as a Sous Chef so has tonnes of experience and new ideas to turnaround the menu at the Black Lion. If it's anything like the tasters we experienced last night it's gonna be mint. Everyone needs to go and try the new food, which will be a take on good, wholesome traditional pub food with fresh, quality ingredients at reasonable prices. It's easy enough to get to walking, from Deansgate I believe is where I walked from. The atmosphere is great and friendly, artsy and independent. They also have a venue upstairs for events such as gigs, previewing independent films, theatre and spoken word. They have a whole host of planned events coming up over the next few months, pop in, have a drink and find out! I wish them the best of luck with their new menu and I shall be attending more of their events very soon!

I've been past here in the early evenings too and there's never any atmosphere or buzz, like you get in really good boozers. Lunch was good though and my friend and I didn't really mind the relative solitude. This pub has 8 cask ales and is under new management so plenty to get people through the door - but why don't they come? It doesn't help that it is pretty big - its a corner pub - so there is plenty i.e. too much room for diners.. Strange. I just feel like there's something I'm missing out on, you know. What does everybody else know that I don't?

It was a busy Sunday afternoon as ManU v Liverpool was on the television so the entire town rocked in at about the same time we did. As a result, there was a slight push and shove to get to the bar and our food took a little while to arrive but it was worth it. We managed to score a table in the corner, away from the tvs, and settled in with some excellent local ale. The staff were friendly and took our food orders efficiently and warned us that there was a 40 minute wait for the suet pies. We were ok with this. Unfortunately the 40 minutes turned out to be over an hour but considering the number of people in there and the top quality nosh that arrived at our tables we were happy to wait. It was gooooooood food - big servings of warm, hearty food that you expect from a local pub. We were all patting our bellies by the end of it, feeling very satisfied. Definitely a winner for anyone out walking in the area.

Six hand pumps including three local ales from Greenfield (Silver Owl was a cracking pint) and Millstone breweries are served together with some seriously hearty home cooked food. The food is good, standard pub fare, served with a smile and a reasonable bill at the end. I've been here on my own, with family and as prt of a staff celebration with 30 odd people (very odd, some of them!) and the staff cope well.

Like most pubs they do a burger and a drink deal, theirs coming in at £9. I had the chicken burger with bacon and avocado and my friend had the three cheese burger. Both were really good and were served with some really fantastic chips. The quiz itself was great, pitched just about the right level. We enjoyed it so much we're making it a weekly affair!
