Several farms come loaded with veggies. Three good breadmakers (including Klaus and his famous pretzel loaves). A couple places to buy eggs. Grasshoppers. Steel City Pops. Monnik crowlers. Kombucha. Quiches. We came home with an armful of pawpaws last week. Are you scared off by expensive farm-raised chickens? Well, $1 might still get you a watermelon or a pair of bell peppers or cucumbers. You're more into cocktails than drum circles? Well, last week at the market we had a demonstration from a local Maker's Mark rep, showcasing market ingredients. Yes, cocktail sampling. I can't promise that will happen frequently, but I can promise that the leadership behind this market isn't sleeping on the job. I'm so happy this market is taking shape.

I just have to, you know, wake up early enough on the weekend to get to a Farmers Market in time to enjoy it. I stopped by a couple times over the summer. It is still pretty small and seems like it is still establishing itself. I hope it continues to grow and gets bigger and better. As it stands, there were a few CBD booths, a couple bakery/pre-made stuff booths (muffins and quiches and cookies, oh my!), sometimes a meat booth, and usually one produce booth. There is also a sort of pop-up food booth so you can get something for breakfast or brunch and eat it there. The vendors and all the people I have encountered while here are super friendly and nice. There just haven't been the kind of stock or variety that I am hoping for. Still, it all just feels small and incomplete. And I will absolutely be back! I really hope it grows and becomes more established and draws both more vendors and more customers!

The market is under a nice pavilion so the hot sun is not an issue. Plenty of booths and everyone was friendly. We really enjoyed this farmers market and plan to frequent it often now that we know about it. One more nice touch...... The restrooms there are very, very nice!!!!! (not port a lets) but actuall restrooms built into the Pavilion. That alone makes this market #1 in my wife's book.

One of the best kept secrets in this area is the Shelby County Farmer's Market. It closed for the…read moreseason on October 25, 2014. Mark you calendars ahead of time because this treasure will reopen for the 2015 season on April 25, 2015. It is held at the Coots Barn at the Shelby County Fairgrounds each Saturday morning and late afternoon on Wednesdays. In 2001 it started with a few farmers with fresh produce. It has grown steadily with 30 farmers and artisans as participants in 2014. You'll find a wonderful assortment of fresh vegetables and fruit. Additionally, there are producers of meat (lamb & chicken), eggs and honey. Also available are fresh herbs and beautiful flowers. This farmers market goes one step farther. You can find jams, jellies, and home baked goods. In recent years the farmer's market has included artisans such as jewelry and soap. You'll have to wait out the winter but I highly recommend a visit to this farmer's market.

It was pretty crowded, even though we went early, but, everyone seemed in good spirits despite the gloomy day. However, while the number of vendors has grown, I didn't spot many selling fruits, veggies or meat. Those that were had a steady crowd. What I did spot today: jarred veggies and preserves, soaps and candles, handcrafted baby items and toys, Berserker cold brew, West 6th beer, desserts by the slice, wooden artwork and food trucks. The farmers market is held near the regular cottages (steel city pops, alchemy, bluegrass witch, etc.) so they'll be open for business too. This was a quick pit stop for our day, approx 30 minutes. If you come hungry they have 2-3 food trucks or booths to grab a snack. We picked up beef lumpia from the Bamba's food truck and sat on the post office steps. There's a few tables around the cottages and we spotted a couple of families laying blankets in the field for a quick picnic.

Depending on the day there may be more or less vendors set up, but I feel like there's always a great variety of items. You can typically find food stuffs, produce, jams, candies, coffee or tea, and more at this market. If you're in the downtown area this is a great resource around lunch time, so do yourself a favor and walk over and check it out!

This market is awesome…read more Not only do you have several farm vendors to get your produce, eggs, meat, cheese, honey, etc., but they offer several excellent options for prepared lunches. Dreamcatcher Farm has a great burger ($5) and quiche and I'm enamored with their tomato pie, which only seems to show up some of the time. Kassidy's Kackle House offers $4 sandwiches with freshly (and locally) made chicken salad or egg salad (among others). This week a Texas-style tamale stand showed up. And Cake Flour is always there with their breads and sweets. Plus, you can get your soaps and flowers and baked goods, canned goods, if that's your thing. I think the market has acquired enough of a following that the number of vendors is only going to improve. It's great to have access to fresh, locally grown food in the downtown area. And to have another good & affordable lunch option. Runs mid-May through October.

It is located in the Fresh Start lot bordered by East Market, Baxter and Jefferson Streets. It is a small to medium sized market but the vendors carry a wide selection of fresh veggies, fruits and also baked and canned goods. The lot offers plenty of parking.

EVERY TUESDAY (MAY 8TH - OCTOBER 30TH) 3:00 TO 6:30 PM (for the 2012 season). Check the website for more info in the coming spring. This past Tuesday I loaded up on the last of the season's heirloom tomatoes (or tomAhtoes, whichever you prefer) as well as some fresh greens and pumpkins of course. Between this farmer's market and Bardstown's on Saturdays I can find literally anything I will be needing- seasonally speaking. This market features live music (usually performing after 4pm even though they open earlier) of a local artist. The last time I went there was a FREE CHILI COOKOFF tasting. SEVEN chili vendors from local restaurants on Market St. It was delectable. Picture curiously sampling warm, reddish brown saucy goodness by the spoonful (seconds were also free) with some free ice water and bright yellow, moist jalepeno cornbread to cleanse the palate between chili's. I have spoken to at least three farmer's at this market as well as an awesome bread baker. She has ultimately the best bread I've sampled of late (and I'm a huge fan of bakeries, just not their calories) due to her unique flavors. I've tried the Hot Chocolate Jalepeno Zucchini bread, the Cranberry Cantelope, and this week's- Blueberry Lemon with sweet icing on top. The best part about this market is the LOCATION and the TIME (Tuesday's are uber productive for me now that I can do this in tandem with mass that evening when the weekend get's too hectic). Parking is in the same lot as the market which puts this one ahead of the rest in regards to availability. Prices are average for a local market- four bell peppers to a pound and $3 for a pound; $1.50 for a pound of locally grown apples (VERY inexpensive considering the crop year that we had due to a late frost in the spring); and SMOOTHIES for $4 made will all local ingredients (minus the strawberries at this time of year). Didn't see that one coming did you? Yes- I enjoyed a watermelon, cucumber, peppermint smoothie (NO ICE- the watermelon was pureed and frozen so it wasn't diluted)- just add gin... I mean, whipped cream? By Sweet and Savory (soon to be food truck in February). Overall, I have tried this market twice and plan to return. The farmers are nice (and cute if you're into that kind of produces his own food thing ;-) ), the food is quality, affordable, parking is excellent, and music is usually strumming. I will be sad when October ends.

I stumbled upon the Beechmont market today. I loved it! There were the veggies that you would…read moreexpect and every peas great. I especially loved the booth with the beautiful ceramics. Mugs, whistles, pendants, all beautiful! Great gifts- I highly recommend them! The market runs October I think. Make sure to hit it up before season end. The Beechmont community is great. This market, the library, walking down Southern Parkway or Iroquois Park- feels like home!
