Just as importantly, we wanted a space filled with kindness, warmth, and joy. We found all of that at Baby Tree. Every day, our daughter is surrounded by rich intellectual stimulation, creativity, and artistic play. The environment is engaging and joyful, and it's clear how thoughtfully the program is designed. What stands out most, though, is the incredible care from the teachers. They meet every child--and every family--with extraordinary patience, kindness, and respect. Ying and the entire teaching team have given us a sense of ease and trust that I honestly didn't know was possible as parents. The teachers all care so much about the students and create such diverse days with free play, outdoor time, field trips, playground visits, lessons, and physical movement. The children learn songs and create wonderful crafts. The teachers also ask for feedback each year if there is anything we want the kids to learn or get more exposure to. They have learned about various careers, space, nature, all sorts of things - and I haven't seen any repeats in our four years here. The teachers also organize several parties a year - a Halloween party, a holiday party, and a graduation party. They are so generous with these parties, ordering food, getting the kids gifts and snacks (and they always make sure siblings get gifts too to reduce jealousy). They take notes to improve every year, from little things like how much food to order to how to run things more smoothly. At the graduation party they always have a photographer and share high quality SLR photos of our kids. The parents and teachers are on a WeChat group and we get daily short videos showing what the kids do each day. We have made wonderful friends through this school, and many families end up at Starr King Elementary, a Mandarin Immersion elementary school in SFUSD.

They go above and beyond with extracurriculars: music, dance, art, gardening, soccer, water play, presentations from alumni, and more. The facilities are great and playthings are constantly refreshed or replaced. You can clearly see that your dollars go to your kids. Honestly, we initially picked Step by Step because it was in walking distance to our home and seemed good enough, but after a few weeks we felt like we hit the lottery. Our previous daycare was great, but they closed at every opportunity and had some draconian rules. Our son seemed to get sick all the time as well. They also offered little insight into the kids' daily experience. Step by Step only closes on the biggest of holidays and is open from 8-6, which is wonderful for two working parents. They are flexible and understanding with doctor's appointments and the myriad of other challenges a family may face. And they send you delightful and heartwarming videos regularly. You can see how much fun the kids have and you can feel the warmth of the place. Also, our kids seem to be sick way less, so whatever hygienic systems and practices they have in place seem to work well (though kids are still going to get sick of course). Step by Step is truly a community, one we've been delighted to send both our boys to. Our daughter (4) and son (1) have been attending the school since they were infants (at 8 months and 6 months). We appreciate the fact that the kids follow a daily schedule and have a routine. We also like the curriculum that the school provides. Over the years, we have seen our daughter develop mentally and academically. Thanks to the teachers there, she has learned a lot. She's learned her shapes, alphabet, numbers, colors, writing, etc. Aside from the curriculum, the kids have a bit of fun too. They play outside in the playground and do a ton of art projects. During holidays, kids will get to celebrate (dress up for Halloween, Easter egg hunt, etc.) Pre-Covid, the school would bring in performers (magicians, lion dancers, etc.) and the kids would also put on a yearly Christmas show for family. The school also just started using an app where they send photos/updates and messages to parents so you can keep in touch with the staff and see how your child is doing. Sure, we have seen staff turnover, but there are a few teachers who have been there since our daughter started. It's great to know that these teachers are now watching our son. Both kids do come home sick occasionally, but that's just the nature of going to school. The school does do a deep cleaning at the end of the week.
