I am not one to leave reviews, but I feel it's important to share my experience for future customers. This was my first visit, and I came in using a gift card. I was really excited for a good massage to help with my tense back. The atmosphere was great, and I truly wish I could say the same about the massage itself. Unfortunately, my experience did not meet expectations. I had Joe as my massage therapist, and my back was never actually massaged--only lightly rubbed throughout the session. It did not feel like proper massage work, and I left without any relief. I'm not sure if this was a training issue, but I do not feel the service was worth the money paid. Had texted and confirmed an appointment for a couples massage on January 4 at 1 PM. Showed up a little before 1 PM and the building was locked. No one would answer the phone for the two numbers posted or a text. Got there before one and waited for 17 minutes after one and they were complete no-show. Appointment confirmed by text. Very disappointed. The owner finally called around 4:45 saying she was in a session. No explanation about why, since we had a 4 pm appointment. Never be back. Bad way to run a business. read more

My wife and I had a couples massage this last Saturday afternoon. I believe Barbara is the owner and she was my wife's massage therapist. My massage therapist was a man named Joel. Now we have been to the Spa several times in the past and had very pleasant experiences. And my wife has always had Barbara for her therapist and has enjoyed all her experiences, including this one. Unfortunately for me, this was the worst massage I have ever had. It was a 60-minute massage and Joel spent the first 40-45 minutes just rubbing my back. NOT massaging my back... just rubbing it with his palm and a little bit of fingers... just up-down, up-down, up-down, up-down, up-down, at the same rate of speed - no muscle work at all, NO technique... just the same simple rubbing motion for over 40 minutes. He did throw in a few moments of shoulder work, but these were unexpected and orettt rough (probably his elbow, but not sure)... totally unenjoyable. After he FINALLY finished rubbing on my back, he spent ONE MINUTE on each arm and hand... so 2 minutes of TOTAL arm and hand work. How do I know this? I was so frustrated I decided to count the seconds on the remaining body areas! I also counted the time on the legs and feet. He managed to spend a TOTAL of 2 and a half minutes (almost!) for BOTH legs and feet. Same method: rub up-down, repeat, repeat, repeat. I did not want to disturb the ambiance of our couples massage for my wife's sake, so I decided I would just endure the massage and save my complaints for afterwards with Barbara. I wanted tell her after the massage, but she and Joel were already ushering the next two people into the room as we were leaving. Barbara, if you are reading this, I am NOT asking for a refund (though I certainly think it would be appropriate)... and Joel did not hurt me. I just want you to know that you should never use that man again in your spa. I also urge people to read the other 1-star reviews on this establishment. read more

My husband and I booked a last minute couples massage and facial and had the MOST relaxing treat EVER!!! When I say it was the BEST it is an understatement because I have never felt soooo relaxed at a massage and facial that I fall asleep!!! This has never happened to me before I usually stay awake at other places but the ladies here have magical powers!!! My first impression was not the best of Gruene Day Spa. When I booked my appointment, I chose a spa package off of the website and the lady on the phone told me it was a good choice and helped pick a day and time that would work for my schedule. I had just had a baby and my birthday present was a little spa day during my maternity leave. I arrived at the spa at 7:45am (my appointment was at 8am) to see that the parking lot had caution tape all around it, so I found parking across the street. I sat in my car and waited. A truck parked next to me and it was my masseuse. She and I both sat on the front porch of the spa for a while before she started calling the owner because the doors were locked and the masseuse did not have a key. We waited and waited, the owner finally let my masseuse know that she thought my appointment was at 8:30, but my masseuse confirmed it was at 8AM. So we waited until right before 8:30 to be let into the building. I felt pretty rushed after that. The masseuse was very nice and I believe they gave me a discount, but they never confirmed it and I wasn't sure if I just didn't get the full service that I requested and they only charged me for that amount? I felt like they should've explained it to me, but nonetheless, the massage was "okay" the service was not great, but it is also a simple mistake. I have a gift card to go here again and I'd like to give another try, maybe I can provide a positive update if my second experience is better! To be continued... read more

My partner and i booked a couples deep tissue massage back in May. We were so excited about it. Barbara booked and managed the session for us. What we received was by no means a deep tissue massage. It was more of a gentle rub/relaxation massage. My partner and I were both so confused during the massage (and afterwards extremely disapppointed as we paid somewhere around $500 including the tip) and didn't at all get what we wanted. I reached out to Barbara afterwards with kindness to try to understand where I had gone wrong when i booked the session. And she never responded back to me. I followed up one more time and still nothing. My partner has back issues and mentioned specific areas on his back he wanted worked on during the session. Those areas were not even touched. I'm pretty certain they did not even glance at the paperwork we filled out for the massage. I am still confused and don't understand why we didn't get what he wanted, which was a deep tissue massage. It was so disheartening I was trying to let it go. And here months later I still feel the need to say something. And no response at all when i reached out to inquire... beware of this place! read more

No one answered when I arrived. Someone came to greet me after my scheduled time had started. I was informed the client ahead of me arrived late and so they were behind but I could wait another 20 minutes and they could get me in. Other spas will simply cut your time short if you are late to stay on schedule out of consideration for their other clients. I work full time with a busy schedule and was absolutely looking forward to a lovely massage before my afternoon meetings began. I have surgery next week with 6-8 weeks recovery ahead so this was a real treat to help prepare myself. Unfortunately I had to leave without getting a massage to keep with my schedule. I left completely blown away that they let a late comer ruin my appointment. That they would consider their time more valuable. They certainly should rethink their late policy. read more

I went in today for the first time for their Bluebonnet package service (essential facial and massage). I enjoyed the most wonderful treatment from both Anita (esthetician) and Barbara (masseuse with magic hands). Anita gave me a relaxing and cleansing facial while Barbara worked out the massive knots in my shoulders with impressive strength and care. She shows up early and they tell her the appointment was canceled. We never received any notification prior. Then the owner refused to refund the money. I had to go there during my lunch break only to have the owner to "call your bank for a refund". Worst service EVER!! Ruined my girlfriend's birthday and had her leaving in tears. Massages are clearly subjective so I won't go into great detail about what I didn't like about mine... There are some standards however; and Gruene Day had some important flaws. First, online appts are made by emailing. I realize this is a small town, but that's not super convenient. Upon arrival we were greeted (using that term derisively) by a young lady my husband described as dour. This is a big deal, since he's the nicest person I know. Our last name wasn't enough, she needed first names too. Not sure I get that. Five minutes after our appointment time, the owner asked if we'd been greeted, then set about finding staff to put us into the massage room. The room was nice, but not terribly private. When our therapists came in, neither introduced themselves (!!!) or asked if we had trouble areas. Those are fails. My husband loved his massage (from the owner, Barbara). I did not love mine. My therapist was young (from now on I will demand 35+) and completely neglected my glutes, and barely touched my shoulders. She had good hands and a kind spirit, but she needs more training. We had booked three massages for Mother's Day for me my sister and my mom. The employees were very rude and unfriendly. Our appointment was for 12 . At 1245 we questioned them about the wait. The women that worked the front desk acted like we were an inconvenience for her for even questioning why we waited. I cancelled mine and my mother kept hers for 5 PM and the front desk attendant acted mad about that too. I would not recommend this spa to anyone who wants over the top attention to detail service, because they do not have it. We weren't offered robes, hot tea, water and maybe that makes me high maintenance but usually if i spend good money on a spa service I would like to at least be offered water. read more

Girls spa day gone wrong due to lack of organization and professionalism with the ladies at Gruene Day Spa :( I went with my mother and sister in law and combined we got 2 massages, 2 pedicures, 3 manicures, 1 bikini wax, and one facial. Not a single one of those treatments went well. There were only 3 women working that morning (we scheduled a week in advance) and so they kept having to switch between us, which ended up leaving at least one of us sitting around doing nothing while we waited. They crammed us ALL in the back room together on three tables. While I got my massage, my mother in law laid on the table and got her pedicure while my sister in law got her facial. Not the most relaxing noises to be hearing while you get a massage...The entire course of the day went about like that, disorganization, unprofessional, awkward. - Massages: not bad but not professional. It was basically just like someone giving your body a rub down. No special techniques and it didn't seem like she knew what to do. - Bikini Wax: she heated the wax way too hot and I had to wait alone in the room for 20 minutes while it cooled. Once it was over there were a ton of stray hairs left over that she attempted to pluck with tweezers... - Manicures: only one coat on mine and some of them she didn't even cover the whole nail! My mother in law's french manicure was uneven and thick and gloppy. Smudged almost immediately. Overall it was a terrible experience. Mainly because of the lack of professionalism, no one seemed to have a plan or know what they were doing! Very disappointing and felt like a complete waste of money. read more

My mom and I received gift certificates for a massage and a pedicure at Gruene Day Spa. The place has a small town charm. We walked in and were greeted by a young woman who was more than pleasant - we then handed her our gift cards. She was sweet and welcoming, introduced herself, and also happened to be my mom's massage therapist (that she said she enjoyed). After laying down in the room we were heads down in the pillows. That's when the other woman walked in. She didn't introduce herself. Dare I say she was the owner? We had our massage. It was good. I've never had a pedicure laying down on a massage bed, but hey, I was all game at first. I had shellac gel on my toes (which I let the young woman in the front know when we walked in) and she said it wouldn't be a problem. Wrong. The owner literally chipped/scratched the polish off with her tools (after attempting to soak in acetone, to her credit) as she became more and more impatient with the polish? Herself? Who knows. What I do know: huffing and puffing and serene waterfall music don't compliment each other well. She was so rough on my feet that they started bleeding. Imagine: her ramming the metal tool into my cuticle, then filing the living heck out of it after, then putting alcohol on it. Most painful pedicure I've had in my life. She was walking in and out to help other customers, leaving my mom on the table wondering what was going on (at this point it was just her working on both of us and we had our eyes covered). Mind you - a professional nail salon will never have a problem removing your polish pain free, believe me, I do it every month. After the torture was over, I met her by the register. She asked for the second gift certificate (that we had handed them when we walked in). She looked for it on the desk and gave us a skeptical look. Then - she charges me $20 for the shellac removal....... ridiculous. That's basically a whole new gel manicure (that includes the removal of previous polish by the way) at a professional salon. I get in the car and take a closer look at my toes. The white shellac polish was never taken off all the way. The pink polish was lazily painted over the old polish that I just paid $20 to get "removed". I took the liberty of posting some pictures. Go ahead. Zoom. The texture is bumpy and sandy. My best friend's husband scheduled a couples massage/pedicure package for her and myself. At arrival they had us scheduled separately, which was fine. The waiting area was cute but not too comfortable. It was right at the front of the building next to the entrance. I had assumed a day spa meant that we would get robes and get to lounge around before our appointment, as experienced with other locations. The massage was good. Massage therapist asked questions about pressure and areas in need. The pedicure was a disappointment. It was done while laying on the massage table. It seemed very hurried as two different staff members worked on my feet. They seemed upset that I did not tell them in advance that I had other nail polish to be removed. The nail polish on each foot was different...one had the glitter covering the whole nail while the other seemed rushed and splotchy. Even at checkout she said "you will see your red nail polish peaking out on the edges. We just couldn't get it off!" Pretty sure the cost of the pedicure includes a full cleaning of nail before other nail polish is put on. I would not return for a pedicure. I may return for a massage if my usual place is booked again. read more

I'll start by saying the young woman who greeted us was very nice and professional. After that it all went downhill. I booked massages and pedicures for my mom and myself. We were supposed to start with pedicures but upon arriving they said we'd have to start with the massage with no explanation. Later we found out that the appointments before us were an hour late for their pedicures so we had to switch outs. Ok, fine not that big of a deal. My massage was one of the worst I've ever had. The lady used way too much pressure even after telling her right beforehand that I didn't want anything too hard. She spent too much time digging her fingers into my neck too. I could also hear her yawning throughout. The whole thing was just uncomfortable, rushed and didn't feel relaxing at all. You can hear everything going on in the spa despite 'calming music' being played. At the end, my massage lady must have heard that my mom was done because she rushed through to the end of my massage. After it was over she left the room and left the door wide open! I had to cover myself in the blankets and close the door. As we waited for our pedicures, the lady who did my massage was loading all the blankets she just used into the back of her car parked out front. Very weird and unprofessional. We were then brought back for our pedicures. We were told to lay on the tables which was really weird - never had a pedicure this way. I assumed we'd have 2 people doing our pedicures at the same time but that wasn't the case. It was one lady going back and forth between us with someone else coming in and out of the room randomly to wrap our feet in towels. The main one also kept going in and out of the room to answer the door/phone. The worst part was that she nicked me while buffing my feet. It hurt like heck and she kept touching it and putting lotion on it. The same thing happened to my mom. She also told us we'd have to walk back to our cars with these flimsy flip flops on because my moms polish needed another 20 minutes to dry and they were closing. At the end, the polish wasn't applied evenly and looked messy. At the price I paid for these "spa services" I was thoroughly disappointed. Very weird place and I won't return or recommend. read more

My mom and I received a gift certificate for massages and hot stone manis and pedis. The massages were great. I felt so relaxed and calm afterward The hot stone portion of the manis and pedis was also very great. They rubbed the stones all over our arms and legs and feet and hands. The polish portion of the mani and pedi - not so great. Portions of my nail aren't even covered, or they polished over the cuticles so I could pull it off in one swipe if I wanted to. I'm right handed, so the best way to describe it is that I used my left hand to paint everything. It was a good experience overall, I just wouldn't recommend a manicure or pedicure from here. Going to the Gruene Day Spa was undoubtedly one of the most frustrating and disappointing spa experiences I have ever had. I booked a couples massage for my boyfriend's birthday. From the moment we arrived we were barely acknowledged. We were told to arrive at 11:45AM for our appointment to fill out new client paperwork. We arrived on time, handed in our paperwork and were instructed to wait on incredibly uncomfortable wooden stools. Our appointment was suppose to start at 12:00PM. We were then left alone to wait for another 15 minutes before anyone acknowledged the fact that we were still waiting for our appointment. By 12:20 still nothing. Finally the manager came and asked us to wait another 10 minutes. Because we had plans for later in the afternoon I said that we didn't really have the flexibility to wait until a half hour after our scheduled time. So the manager decided to perform the service herself. She was incredibly aggressive and her long nails dug into my skin. When I requested that she adjust the way she was massaging me she seemed very put out and continued to hastily massage me. If it weren't a couples massage, I would have gotten up and walked out after the first 10 minutes of the service. Because of her long nails she couldn't pin point any of the painful knots in my shoulder. During the massage I asked her to focus on my right shoulder and she maybe spent 5 of the 60 minutes on the area. I came out feeling worse than I did when I went in. By far the worst massage I've ever received. HOWEVER, my boyfriend did enjoy his massage. The young woman that massaged him did a great job. I wouldn't go back because of the way the manager handled the situation. She did comp the service but she was one of the worst examples of customer service I've ever seen. read more

Barbara, Owner & massage therapist extraordinaire, has the best hands and hand selects all the therapists, and every person I've had was great. I have come for over ten years. They are very intuitive & use aromatherapy with every client as well as luxurious oils & hot towels. The rooms are cozy and relaxing. Why would anyone go to a cookie cutter place with a gem like this around? There is a nice sitting area outside so you can come & just let go. Jackie and Barbara are amazing!!! Of course booked these wonderful ladies on separate occasions. Scheduling was on target, no mess ups there. I suffer from occasional lower back discomfort due to womanly issues Jackie knew exactly how to relieve me. Barbara is fantastic as well after the wonderful body massage her facial and head massage was amazing. The only downfall to this place is the brightness in the rooms. I love it very dim.
