Cicilline dedicated this monument that greets visitors to Federal Hill. It's located near the Gateway Arch at Garibaldi Park, and does a beautiful job of describing the contributions of Providence's Italian Americans. The gray granite slab's inscription reads: Dedicated in honor of Italian Americans who have given so much to the life, culture, and history of Rhode Island. It's only held about twice a month, and it's very different than RITT if you've been there. I have had the disfortunte of going to both. RITT is very formal, while NPTH is very... well, informal as far as these things go. Expect to pay your ticket, along with court fees, as the judge does not often waive any. Remember, North Providence has their own court, there's probably a reason for that. As far as paying for your fees/tickets/etc, please be advised, there is a 7.50$ fee if you pay via credit card. They don't accept cash. Checks are your friends. Get there early, you'll get better parking that way.

I've walked past the Fox Point Veterans Memorial more times than I could possibly count,…read moreparticularly during the years I lived in Providence. It's easy to pass by without giving it much thought because it isn't a huge monument or some grand attraction that demands your attention. It's a relatively modest memorial sitting near the Point Street Bridge, but once you actually stop and look at it, there's quite a bit there. The memorial was created by Aristide Berto Cianfarani, an Italian-born sculptor who studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, and it was dedicated in 1951. It was commissioned and paid for by the people of Providence as a memorial to local residents who served during World War II. The granite monument has bronze reliefs on both sides. One depicts male service members in combat dress, while the opposite side depicts women serving in the military. There are also olive branches representing peace and a bronze eagle on top. What I find particularly interesting is that the memorial has had something of a second life. It wasn't always situated where it is today. Its original location was farther up near Wickenden Street, where it was difficult for pedestrians to really see or appreciate. Eventually it was moved to its current location near the Point Street Bridge, where it became much more accessible to people walking along the waterfront. There's also something very Providence about the memorial itself. It was created for the people of the city, commemorating men and women from the community who went off to serve during World War II. Providence was, and remains, a city built around neighborhoods. Fox Point has changed dramatically over the decades, but having something like this tucked into the landscape provides a physical connection to an earlier Providence and to the people who lived here before the city became what it is today. I've always liked stumbling across things like this when walking around Providence. You don't necessarily need to make a special trip just to see it. If you're already in Fox Point, walking along the river, or crossing the Point Street Bridge, take a minute and stop. Look at the bronze work, look at the details, and think about why someone bothered to build it in the first place. Five stars from me. Not because a memorial is an attraction in the conventional sense, but because it is an accessible piece of Providence history that deserves to be noticed. I've passed it countless times, and I suspect I'll continue doing exactly that for years to come. Sometimes the places that become familiar parts of a city are the ones worth slowing down for every once in a while.

There are two sides; four male soldiers with rifles, each representing the Marines, Navy, Army, and Armed Forces; four females in the military are on the right side. I really appreciate the representation of the females in this sculpture. The symbol of peace which are olive branches and a bald eagle, which is the national symbol for the U.S. can be seen on it. I was walking by and had to stop and admire it.

We took a girls trip to RI over a long weekend and stayed at this quaint house. Local artists…read moredesign the wallpaper which is changed periodically. We found the house on Airbnb. Each room is unique and very adorable. We couldn't stop gushing about it. They offer snacks downstairs throughout the day and provide a delicious breakfast in the morning. There is free parking but also within walking distance to several delicious bakeries and coffee shops. I hope to stay here again if I'm in the area.

Providence City Hall is the center of the municipal government in Providence, and is located at the…read moresouthwest end of Kennedy Plaza at 25 Dorrance Street. The building was constructed between 1875 and 1878 and designed by Samuel J. F. Thayer in the Second Empire style. In 1975, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places; it is also a contributing structure to the broader Downtown Providence Historic District. Though the area around it has changed over the years, Providence City Hall remains a constant in downtown Providence. The cast iron and masonry structure witnessed the evolution of Exchange Place into Kennedy Plaza, two hurricanes, and multiple cycles of economic depression and growth. Initially, Providence's municipal government was located in the crowded Market House, across the Providence river. Needing a bigger space, alderman were split on where to put a new city hall. Half of the council lived on the east side of the river, and half on the west, causing a thirty-year struggle over where to put the new government building. Eventually, the west side won and the cornerstone was laid on June 24, 1875. In the 1950s the city's downtown master plan called for the demolition of City Hall, but it was saved and restored, reflecting the city's pride in its historic roots. Many city departments can be found in this building...including Tax collection, Board of Canvassers, Board of Licenses, City Archives, City Council, Public Works, Municipal court, Mayor's office, and much more. I usually go into the building for things related to my tax bill or a few years ago to get my marriage license. Anyway, a beautiful building reminiscing of a French government building in the heart of Providence.

However, Samuel Slater's success at water-powered cotton spinning at Pawtucket in 1790 drew attention to the industrial development potential of the State's rivers and streams, and in the ensuing decades Rhode Island businessmen showed an eagerness to exploit available waterpower sources, even in relatively remote areas that had not been considered particularly favorable for settlement. I would recommend this after you read up on the Oakland Mill so you are better prepared for the ruins.
