I'm dying to go back here. My family and I went here last year on vacation and ate at this place. OMG! We can't stop talking about the food, the service the ambience and the history of the building. We wanted traditional German food. Boy did we get it. We ordered a huge platter served on board it over fed my family of 4. I believe historically it has always been a brewery. Beautiful copper vats in a basement. You almost feel like you have gone back in time. You can have your beer served via a keg at tableside if you wish. The food was amazing and we ate until we couldn't eat any more. The beer was outstanding (I am not normally a beer drinker and I had two beers) The waitress was super friendly and helped us decide what to order. Reasonably priced. I wish I could give this place a better review, we had high hopes when we arrived but they slowly gotten eaten away. We were greeted at the door and asked if we had a reservation. We did not which shouldn't have been a problem mid week at 1700 with an empty place. After conferring with the group of servers standing around doing nothing they decided we could occupy on of the many empty tables. The waitress took a while to make it over to us but we ordered a round of drinks and looked over the menu, as we were trying to figure out what we wanted I spotted a nice mouse run away from the food area. The little guy had no problem running through the place. So needless to say we finished our drinks and left. This place is amazing in a number of ways; Firstly it's the biggest restaurant/pub I've ever been to. It spans the entire block, probably something like 20m x 150m from looking at the map. Secondly it's incredibly German. It's all massive sausages, huge cuts of ham and pork and independently brewed pilsner. The beer is not cheap at EUR3.60 for just 400ml, but it is very good. The same can be said of the food. We got a huge sharing platter, er, slice of tree, for EUR15.50 per person - it was good. To top it all off they have some rather attractive waitresses :) One thing worth noting is that it's quite an experience to walk in from the Bei Den Mühren entrance, rather than the Willy-Brandt-Straße side, as then you'll get to walk through the maze of rooms before you hit the bar. If someone tries to seat you in the fancy restaurant when you first enter, say that you want to go through to the brewery Note: Don't come here for lunch, it's an evening place. 2 words: Pork Heaven. I knew we were onto a good thing when 2 whole roast pigs were carried past us on the way in. Salivating, and not just at the staff, we explored further. It's a labyrinth of beer and meat, and mountainous potatoes. The sort of place you'd dreamed Germany was like, but if you're in the North, have been shielded from. Lunch at Groeninger for me is hit-or-miss. More hits than misses, surely, but still some misses here and there. Other than the Hofbraeuhaus, I think this is the closest it gets to traditional German food. I really love the meat and potato combinations that they serve but I don't like it when they drench the whole bit in sauce, especially if I don't like the sauce to begin with. Where I'm from, sauce is normally served on the side, so at Groeninger I kind of feel like I'm saving my lunch from drowning. I recommend Groeninger as a great place to take friends or family visiting from out of country as well as an enjoyable, filling and affordable lunch for those rainy days. The pretzel was nothing special though along with the other food we had. Our waitress was helpful but didn't check on us too often, and we waited a while for our check. Went here with a humongous group while on a work trip and absolutely loved the experience. We indulged in shared platters with several types of sausage, crispy pork belly, potatoes and sauerkraut that was about €16 per person and were extremely happy with our choice ... that was until the waiters passed by with a full roasted pig with beautifully crackled skin! It turns out this has to be ordered a week in advance. We were terribly jealous. We all also feel a twinge of regret for not ordering the 10-liter beer barrel which you could then have on tap on the table. Given the opportunity, I would plan another big outing to this place and order both the whole roasted pig and the beer barrel (no matter what size my party lol). Service was good. They didn't balk at our party of about 20 wanting to pay separately by card. To be nicer to the servers, I would recommend coming with cash if you have a large party. read more

This is where I fell in love with beer. This isn't hyperbole. I fell in love. I had just graduated high school and embarked on a trek through Europe. One of my earlier stops was in Hamburg. To visit friends and they took me here. Now, having recently discovered alcohol, I was eager to flex my more grown and independent muscles and actually order beer at a bar. Something then impossible. I was 17, puny, geeky and looked like a 5th grader. Regardless, there I was, and I learned my first lesson in drinking etiquette. "First Round, On Me." Then learning the protocol of at some point buying the next round. We walked in to find ourselves in what I imagined a German to be, thick oak tables and benches and walls that wrapped around the room snugly. A few tables had these mini oak kegs with the spigots hammered into them, and I dared to dream. Of course, we were too poor would have probably gotten black out drunk, so thankfully, we just to half liter rounds. Though we fared not much better in the end. Then the beer came out, golden, yet immaculately clear. Even through the fine bubbles emanating towards the head, and I sipped. Now mind you, up to this point, alcohol was strictly an ends to a means, and beer had been up til then the least desirable way to get to that means. This changed everything. I tasted chestnuts and flowers with enough touch of a bitter bite added that exclamation point of crispness rather than dully counter the initial flavors. This was beer. Beer was good. Came here last night with a large group and had a great time! Love the feel of this place as it looks like a cave basement but as you go further in, you see a buffet of meats, and pots where they are brewing their own beers then rows of tables. Since we were a large group, the most efficient way to drink beer was to by the barrel! Once you purchase the barrel, they set it up at one end of the table. Whoever is sitting next to the barrel ends up refilling everyone's drinks so be sure you have someone who is ok with that and be sure to have an efficient pourer :) Once we got the beer settled, onto food! For our group, some of us went for the buffet option while about 6 of us went in on a meat platter. Everything on the menu looks great so you really can't go wrong with any option. The meat platter that we went in on was about 17 euros per person. There was plenty of food for everyone so don't worry on a shortage of meat for anyone! We still had food on the table but suddenly the wait staff came around with more complimentary food so again, don't worry this place will make sure you are well fed! Seems like a really great place to hang out over a barrel of beer with some friends. The food is authentic and fantastic! If you want a Bavarian beer hall experience in Northern Germany, this is the place to be. We strolled in off the street after having translated the menu online, and decided to go the a la cart route with plenty of Groninger Pils to wash it down. A la cart is charged by the gram, and you'd be surprised how inexpensive a huge hunk of Fleischkäse can be...and let me say that the crispy skin in TO DIE FOR. Then with a healthy helping of grunkohl (a regional/seasonal "collard greens"), sauerkraut, and Bratkartoffeln (home fries with bacon bits) we sat with our Pils beers and were pretty happy. The experience was completed by an accordion player who would stroll the beer cellar singing drinking songs with the stag parties. What I liked most about these Pils beers is that they were a little heavier and more flavorful that then typical Stella or Heineken. They were almost an amber...and delicious...and will be perfect in the summer. read more

We arrived late in Hamburg due to problems on the train. It was raining but we were hungry and excited to start exploring a new city. After a quick look at Yelp we narrowed it down to a few choices, with Gröninger as our first choice. We found it without much trouble and walked in. Although there was plenty of staff around no one offered to seat us or told us to seat ourselves, but we saw a table free up and sat down. A server came over and cleared our table but did not offer us anything. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. After about twenty minutes someone came over and took a beer order (we knew we wanted Pils, luckily) and whisked off again before we could ask about food. The beer came relatively quickly, but was deposited unceremoniously by someone who didn't slow down for long enough to offer any more help. Some ten minutes later we finally managed to make eye contact with a server. We had some questions about the menu (are the dishes hot or cold? how much food is there? etc), but she offered only one or two word answers and left again before we could ask all of our questions. We managed to flag her down again to ask about the buffet and she seemed relieved and told us to just go up and get whatever we wanted, so we went up to take a look. The food all looked fine, but nothing was special to Hamburg (we'd been in Germany a few days and had had plenty of haxe (pork hocks) and sausages already). We opted against the buffet and decided we'd rather go somewhere that wanted our business. A colleague brought us here before for dinner and a few drinks last year, and I haven't stopped talking about it since so it's only fair that we returned to it when we arrived in Hamburg. It strikes me as a traditional bierhalle (but that may be stereotypes throwing me) with it's long tables and benches. They bring barrells of beer to the table for your party to enjoy, and offer both buffet food, and table service for some things. The pork knuckle is absolutely stunning. Quick tip though - do not order a full size one unless you are extremely hungry because it is massive! Great food, great beer, interesting decor, and fairly priced. Yesterday I spent with a big group my second time in the groeninger. 13 years later I think. It has an great self breawed beer and tradional bavarian food. For freaks of meet, it is a great place to stay. Vegetarians will get a little bit in trouble. For me as an person that does not eat meat very often. It was a little bit too much. It would be pretty tough to find a place with a stronger German theme that the Groninger Braukeller. The place looks pretty innocuous from the outside, with an austere doorway in a grey bricked block, accompanied by the obligatory accessory a couple of smokers hanging around outside; however entering inside you are confronted by a huge place of Tardis proportions, complete with carvery, polished brewery mash tuns, room after room filled with bench seated tables and booths fashioned from huge wooden barrels. A place not ideal for Vegetarians (although we had two in our party) or wine lovers (they only really serve beer) its brilliant for a group. Our party included French, English, Italian, Latvian, Spanish, Dutch as well as a minority of locals and we opted for the Massive Wooden Slab of Meats; plus the barrel of 10 litres of German Ale. Therefollowed a great fun night and at 25 Euro a head was good value. If you want a tongue in cheek German experience then this is your place. read more

I was invited to a 50th Birthday party to Groninger, After reading all the positive reviews about this place i was definitely not disappointed. The U train station Messburg is a two minute walk to this place and there is a multi story car park directly across for this place. The entrance is a bit strange as it leads you down into the cellar part of the building, once I had entered I could not believe just how long this place is, it goes on for ever. with it's own brewery casks on display and large bar and a very warm feeling, i was instantly impressed. You are then escorted to your setting area, it has a multitude of quaint little seating areas for all size of group parties. An absolute necessity is to reserve your booking here, as it is very popular not only with foreigner's but also the locals as this place is all what you would expect to be from a typical German restaurant and then some. The food bar and menu choice is mainly traditional Bavarian man food (meat and more meat) which i loved. To go with your food you can order a barrel of their own beer 10L for 74EUR, it has it's own taste which i and our party found very easy to drink, as between us we managed to drink through 7 barrels of the stuff. The barrels are brought to your area and decorked and then left there for you to help yourself. My 11 year old son was made up, as he was the barman for the night and he was also very well tipped at the end of the night.... All in all i would say that this place is good for both a quiet night for 2 /4 people or a party place for much more, due to the size of the place and its setting layout making it private for each group that are there. read more

The Gröninger is a brew house close to the Altstadt in Hamburg. The beer is very tasty and the location is very interesting with basement vaults. (There is no mobile connection) As food they offer German good and solid food. You can either choose from the buffet (you pay according to the grams of food) or a variety of dishes at the table. i had been there with a friend from manchester, thought it might be a nice ending of a day full of tourist attractions , like miniature wonderland- iwas wrong! first we had a quick look on the menu to see if we could afford it: it seemed rather expensive or at least not cheap to me. we decided to go inside anyway because i always had wanted to go there and some friends recommended it to me. well first thing was that when we had a closer look on the menu, there were just about 5 dishes, one of which was just for 20 or more persons (spanferkel / a grilled pig), two were cold dishes and the other two weren't interesting. but threre was still the buffet! it seemed to be a wide choice. there was green cabbage, a typical northern german dish which i recommended to my friend: with fried potatoes and leberkäs (he wanted it that way, doesn't go together very well i think) i took the pig roast and a baked potatoe with sour cream. we also had some salad each and sliced bread that sat on a self-service-table. the bread was dry as concrete, the salad was TERRIBLE (the potatosalad was kinda raw, the dressing was nearly just made of vinegar and the olives tasted very weird). the meat was just lukewarm; so was the green cabbage. the worst was my baked potatoe: it seemed to contain traces of dishwashing!! and even the sourcream tasted a bit rancid. to make it all even worse, the waitress was incredibly rude. my friend didn't tip her and she rummaged in her wallet for ages and then said in a sulky voice well, i am 40 cents short-what NOW?? so he told her to just keep the 40 cents. after she had huffily left us we finished our beer (which was actually quite good). when she came back to clear the table, she pretended we were not there any mor and didn't talk to us at all. it was THE WORST food i ever had, it was really expensive for that and i was totally embarassed in front of my friend who i had told that "the food is REALLY REALLY GOOD!! read more
