This place is a hidden gem !! It is a lot smaller than I expected ,but definitely great for kids of all ages. I saw the sign while going into downtown TC and since we were staying close by at the resort on a rainy day I decided to make a stop. There is an outdoor area ( heated) conservatory and then a small museum with bugs that you walk through. Lots of employees give you information and tell you about the butterflies and bees. For older kids you can read many facts on the placards. My three year old loved it , but it did only occupy about 45 minutes and we went slow. It looks like I can get pretty crowded , the only downside since they do not do reservations. A cute food truck that has ice cream is also in the parking lot which was convenient we did not eat there. Beware there is a gift shop when you exit and of course I got stuck by my kids something lol . Cool place!!! definitely worth checking out . read more

We came here as a family for Mother's Day and it was a perfect choice of a way to spend an afternoon for all four generations! There is truly something for everyone. The staff was nearby to answer all of our questions and help the butterflies land on us (but no touching!). They even brought out butterflies for our granddaughters to release. And then as if that wasn't enough, we then went into the bug zoo to see creepy crawlies from all over the world. It was so cool - for all ages! This is a beautiful place with great staff. It's smaller than other butterfly houses we have been to, but the we learned a lot more here than any of out other experiences. When you approach the building, it's seems very modest. When you get inside, expect to be greeted by someone who is very enthusiastic about butterflies and bugs (and educating children). It was a great place to spend an hour to get a break from the water activities. The staff was knowledgeable and kind. Honestly if you love bugs this place is heaven. You could spend hours in the butterfly house and if you don't like bugs come in anyway and you WILL leave liking bugs. The people who work here are so kind and polite and willing to teach and help with anything. One of them even caught a wolf spider that got loose in the front of the store. Currently having a pulled pork sandwich and a milkshake in the parking lot. Spent three hours in this place. Would love to come back! read more

Was a lot smaller than expected. But there are several different butterflies and bugs to check out. The staff is very helpful and informative about the insects they have. This butterfly house is super cool. We found this place online and it was between our lake cottage and Sleeping Bear Dunes so we stopped. The layout is you walk in to the front desk, pay and then head thru a mini museum to a mud flap doors. These are there to keep the butterflies safe from escaping. They have between 30-50 different species of butterflies at one time. These high fliers zoom about in the humid room. They land on just about everything; rocks, leaves of the plants, ceiling, you. It's a fun place for kids and breaks up any drive! They have two workers inside to show you the different types of butterflies. It's truly a fun time for kids! After you leave that room they put you on the other side of the mini museum. This is of bugs, spiders and frogs. Oh, and a bee hive that is in a clear casing and they actually have a pipe exit for them. So they fly outside to get real flowers and nectar. We will be back for this place! This exhibit is amazing! My daughter and I are local and spend about an hour here when we go, though she would spend much longer. This is an amazing find for a family activity in the Traverse City area. Not only is their butterfly garden beautiful - getting to watch butterflies naturally float around you while watching various stages of hatching - but their bug zoo is fascinating. Beetles, salamanders, spiders, and other unique creatures are all well-displayed in an interactive learning environment for all ages. The staff is incredible - we took a group of 35 kids through and they had a fantastic time with the patient, knowledgeable and enthusiastic team, learning everything they ever wanted to know about Bug & Butterfly Life. The ice cream shack and picnic spot just outside was a huge hit with the kids afterward. Don't forget to donate as you leave so they can continue importing amazing creatures from around the world! read more

Super fun. The butterflies!!!! It's warm in here though, so tropical-ish, so now you know. There are butterflies and moths of different sizes and colors. Fun for all ages. So much fun in one small place! How much fun can you have looking at bugs ? A whole lot! The entire staff is knowledgeable and passionate about all the critters there and really spend time to teach you about the exotic butterflies as they flutter around your head, and the live creepy crawlies in the tanks. The butterflies are everywhere, it's ridiculously beautiful. The garden is warm and humid for the butterflies comfort, so dress lightly. It's hard to find activities that kids/babies can enjoy (that are inexpensive) and this place is it! Our baby loved it, I only wish she was old enough to remember the experience but I'll never forget it. Definitely stop by for an hour to see everything. This is a great little exhibit and experience. It's interesting enough to wander around a room full of butterflies, but when there are interested and engaging volunteers to explain what's going on, and a bunch of small exhibits showing fun insects and spiders, it makes for a very pleasant stop. But it is mostly just a stop: we lingered, and saw everything there is to see, in around 45 minutes. You can tell that this is a product of a few people's passion. That's great in that it's a very down-to-earth experience, and the people there actually seemed to care about what they're doing. It's about 15 minutes outside of Traverse City, but worth the drive, particularly for insect or butterfly lovers. read more

My girls were so excited when the Butterfly House was being built! Overwhelmed with anticipation to be so close to such a cool place. The first year it was open we rushed to check it out. The staff is very kid friendly and they do have a lot of neat butterflies and information. They are happy to chat and educate kids about nature. So my girls felt very welcome. But the prices are steep and it's small. There really isn't enough going on there to make it worth the high admission fee. Unfortunately we have not been back since that first year. read more
