Was curious to try out a new restaurant that was so well rated and boy we were not disappointed. This hidden gem had all my favorites. Jarritos, pupusas, and Quesabirra tacos! The parleying lot and seating area was almost full when we arrived, but we found room and after a short wait were served delicious food. As a non-Spanish speaker, it can feel intimidating to be in a restaurant where that is the dominant language, but the relaxed atmosphere and kind staff totally put us at ease. My friend and I were looking for a birria place in durham. After a long search and a few phone calls, we found this restaurant. Very much a hole-in-the-wall place, but MAN was this experience life-changing. We waited about a very mouth watering 15 mins to get our food and it did not disappoint. This has remained, hands down, one of a handful of places I consistently go to when I'm in Durham. I have brunch with friends here (and they're always happy when this place is picked), take some pozole home to have on the couch, and pretty much all other casual friend/social functions. Damn. I love this place. Went here three times the last week and still drooling and dreaming of the food there. Sure the parking space is super tight, wait sometimes can be long depending on when you go (we waited almost an hour the first time we went on a Sunday night from 7-8pm), but the food... omg. Amazing. Even better than NYC Los Tacos (although NYC doesn't really have good tacos or Mexican food). We learned to bypass the wait time by calling in and ordering and then picking up instead of ordering at the restaurant. Also, I feel that the restaurant is less busy from 5-6 as opposed to 7-8pm. Anyways, the menu isn't in English, so the first time we went, we had to have the guy at the register translate almost everything for us. They are so nice and patient though. The salsa bar as everyone else has said is super super amazing. I love the pico Gallo and the green salsa sauce and the pickled onion and the pickled cabbage. Also tons of limes! Favorite tacos are the steak and chorizo. Had the chicken which was a little bland and dry (but nothing that the salsa bar can't fix). Also tried the shrimp, the pork (a little gamey for me) and the quesadilla. The tortas are definitely the highlight though. We tried two on the menu (can't remember exact names, I think the Cubana and then one that started with a P), and they are soooo flavorful. All the food here is super cheap too, so that makes it even better. Definitely now probably my favorite restaurant in Durham. read more

I heard this hype about this place and decided to stop in for a taco experience. I stopped in around 3 p.m. thinking that there wouldn't be any since it was an odd hour to eat a late lunch but the restaurant filled up immediately. I'm not exaggerating but I literally stood in line for 20 minutes just to order my food. I'm not sure if they were low in staff or not but it took a long time to get to the cash register, there were only 3 customers in front of me. It took another 20-25 minutes to receive my food. I can't be spending this much time at a restaurant. My tacos were ok -- nothing special in my opinion. I got a al pastor, chorizo, and steak taco -- my favorite was the chorizo. I don't think that it was worth standing in line that long for the experience. The tacos were also really small for the price. Also, the salsa bar was not that impressive. read more

The food here is awesome! Their vegetarian options, like the veggie burrito, are fire. They also have mushroom tacos, which are pretty good. I would recommend the vegetarian tacos as well. read more

After closing down due to tax purposes (so I heard), Los Comales was forced to rename their restaurant. However things have been kept essentially the same, even down to the employees. So if you're wondering if this place is good or not, just read the reviews for "Los Comales." There's nothing really different that I haven't said in my first review; serious eats for a great price. They have Tacos, Gorditas, Pupusas, Tortas, etc. I've been many times and have yet to be disappointed. My only nitpicking is the size of the eating area. I wish I could bring troves of people here, but unfortunately they have about 12 tables. However, come through if you're looking for something legit. You won't be disappointed. read more

I have questions with regard with their dishes. They are really informative to let me know of each dishes and differences. Thank a lot! It would be an advantage to speak some Spanish since one of the cashier does not understand English well. Food: I had Enchiladas Rojas. From what they have told me, this is called green one. It was composed with avocado, tomato with green sauce with chicken in it. I ordered it and found if I mixed with their red sauce on the counter, the combo would be equal to some word like heave. VERY Delicious. And it is only 8 bucks. Highly recommend. They also have salsa, and ingredients for you to choose. Price: is expensive compared to The mexican supermarket food court. Average taco would be 2 dollars and their menu marks the price without taking taxes into calculation. Be aware. But it is still a cheap place to get delicious food. Overall, it is a 5! This place reminds me of California style Mexican food, though more expensive (which makes sense since there's a shortage of Mexican restaurants in Durham). I was pleased with the al pastor tacos, and especially loved the self help condiments bar (cilantro, onion, sauce galore)! Came here on a Saturday around 12:40pm, and seating was a bit difficult. I noticed it cleared out around 1:30pm, so come after lunch for easier seating. I'd definitely come back for some authentic Mexican food. read more

I was in town for the day and a friend recommended me this place. I went in on a Sunday at 1pm which was POPPING! Luckily I called ahead of time and only had to wait in line to pay for my take out order. The pupusa was delicious and so were the pastor tacos. Unfortunately the carne asada was a little hard (not sure if it was overcooked or what) so that's why it wasn't a 5 star meal. Overall, great environment and authentic tacos and pupusa. We got the huitlacoche quesadilla, which was huge and on an amazing homemade corn tortilla, and a vegetarian burrito. I know this place has so many good reviews it's probably not helpful to add to the huge list, but it was so good I feel I have to. I recently moved from Chicago (where there is a huge Mexican population and some of the best food you are going to find outside of Mexico) and was hoping I could find something close here. Without a doubt, the best Mexican food in Durham. I moved here from Los Angeles searching for good Mexican food and this is definitely the closest thing to home. Everything I've tried here has been authentic, fresh and delicious. The prices are affordable and the portion sizes are huge. My favorites are the carne asada tacos, chicken tacos, the enchiladas and the agua de piña. One word of caution is that the food does take quite long to be prepared. My takeout orders were consistently 10-20 minutes late based on the estimate given over the phone. That said, once you get it, it's well worth the wait! read more

They are way bigger than what I usually have back home. The taste was great! *Tacos de Cabeza, Asada, Pastor, all were super amazing! The meat quality was very good. *Coctel de Camarones *Huarache se Asada *Milanesa De Res with rice and beans and tortillas The restaurant had a long line so that was a good sign at first when we drove up. Was going to get tacos, but saw that they were $2.50 (I guess I'm spoiled--- I'm used to really good tacos that are $1.50), so I went with the torta Cubana. Looks pretty good. As you probably know, everyone makes them differently, and I like the style that has the "weiner" in it. You'd think by looking at this thing, it'd be amazing. However, the taste wasn't great. First, let me say that when you look at the menu, the option for burrito just says "burrito" which can be confusing next to the dozen different listings of every type of taco. I love this place. I found it thru a friend when we were living in Durham last year. I love it so much that I made a special trip tonight while I'm in town for only the weekend and I'm trying to hit all my favourite spots. My usual is the chicken or carnitas tacos. They have the best salsa bar ever. Everything is so fresh and the service is usually prompt. Tonight I had the asada taco and chicken taco. The chicken taco was perfect. The asada was awful. There was gristle and the meat was over cooked to the point of tasteless rubber. This is not the Guanajuato I know and love. The service was crazy slow too, but the restaurant was busy. I'm giving it four stars to capture my precious experiences which were numerous, and taking away one star for this evening's experience. read more

I felt like I left the States. Entering this restaurant I was kinda intimidated. The entire menu was in Spanish. My dinner partner had the guts to ask for a menu in English. Thankfully, they had one. We looked over the menu and I decided to have the Sirloin fajitas. My friend ordered the Verde tacos. We sat and enjoyed the authentic environment. Nothing flashy. Just a tv showing a soccer match. Simply decorated walls with fixed booths lining the walls. It was moderately busy and folks were patiently waiting in their meal. Our food came out and we both wondered how we'd eat if all. Regardless of the size, we still headed over to the condiment bar to add free cilantro,jalapeños, and more onions. I thoroughly enjoyed the fajitas. The skirt steak was a little tough but flavorful. The refried beans accompanied by the Spanish rice went well with the meal. I certainly will be back. read more
