The Guildford Arms is the most stunning in place in Edinburgh to grab a pint! This classic Victorian bar from 1896 in New Town is family owned and operated! We stopped by on St. Patty's Day and the place was packed! We were able to snag a seat and ordered pints at the bar. The Guinness in the UK tastes so much better than at home in the states! I had to get a glass anytime I saw the Scottish Thistly Cross Cider! So good! Would definitely recommend making a reservation if trying to eat in the gallery restaurant above the bar! read more

Guildford Arms cancelled a reservation we made a month in advance on the day of just hours before our reservation. To make it worse we're on vacation at the time and did not find a reservation we had hoped to replace the one they cancelled. Their claim was a rule w children that's not on their website. The galley is supposed to be for children and they booked us well in advance but did not notify us of the strict rule even though we disclosed our child would dine with us. Very very disappointing! I asked a local Scot what I was missing and they said it's not more than a touristy pub mostly known for being one scene of Trainspotting. That experience certainly won't be missed. read more

I don't know why British food gets a bad reputation. The steak and ale meat pie is so delicious! The pastry is fluffy and crispy and yummmmm! Amazing ambiance: one of the older bars in the city, and it is tucked away on a cute side street! This was a favorite spot amongst the locals, so we were happy we lucked out and found it right across the street from our hotel! Fun pub! Bustling place. Immaculately kept up, the antique ceilings and the bar all look like military bright work for spiffy clean. Great vibe. Mix of locals and the tourists who find the place off the back of the main buildings on Princes Street. A lot of local beers and faves on tap. Decent liquor selection, but whiskies are kind of light, and they carry more British gins than Scottish, other than one also ran local distillery. Seating us get it as you can, but comfortable. Wonderful service. We had just finished a long day-trip to the Highlands and were ready for a beer and a good meal. Our waiter showed us upstairs to a quiet dining room overlooking the pub. He was very attentive and helpful. We had the sausage of the day with mash and the steak and ale pie. Both dishes were exceptional. The waiter was very accommodating for my elderly parents as well. We love the cubby hole down on the first floor, back right of the building. Revolving door to enter. Go counter clockwise to get in. The bar area opens well before the restaurant, which is located upstairs. The restaurant upstairs, opens promptly at 1700. You will be greeted with a smile and helpful staff. Yum, delicious last meal in Edinburgh! We had some typical Scottish beers that were excellent as most British beers are. For dinner I had the fish and chips. It was excellent! It wasn't beer battered but was panko breaded which is a nice change and wasn't too greasy as with the beer battered. The hake was tasty and cooked perfectly and it came with fries which were some of the best I had had and tasted very fresh. The dish also came with peas per British standard with fish n chips. We sat in the bar but there is an upstairs area to the restaurant as well. When you sit downstairs you have to order at the bar. read more

We decided to try this place out based on the reviews of a couple local Elites. Fantastic experiences both nights we went. First off, the decor is Victorian-decadent and feels classy, modern and welcoming. There are a variety of places to sit -- tables, booths, nooks and crannies -- and you can expect a full house if you're here alongside the after-work crowd. There's a large variety of ales on tap, so don't be afraid to ask the barkeeps for suggestions. Naturally, there's a fine selection of single malts available as well. Prices are very reasonable, especially for being a skip off of Princes Street. If you need something a little more substantial than a few good ales to fill your belly, Guildford Arms also offers gourmet pub grub, from classic fish and chips to your obligatory haggis, neeps and tatties. I tried the Angus steak pie. It came out piping hot and a was a savory little boat full of meat and gravy. Comfort food for grey, cold evening, for sure. There's also a tiny dining area upstairs that overlooks the rest of the pub. Up there, they have an expanded menu featuring a number a entrees. Ever read the one negative review and think it couldn't be that bad. Guess again. Wife had a steak and ale pie that's microwaved and then burnt to try and crisp the top. Got a side of baby potatoes that needed another 4 minutes to cook. Not crunchy but definitely not ready. I had fish and chips. The fish was ok but not beer battered. The Guilford Arms is a great pub, the decor is great and has a very Victorian feel to it. The range of real ales that Guilford offers is very impressive and throughout the year they have a special ale that is offered. The prices are quite expensive but if you are into your real ales, there aren't many places around that would be able to compete with the Guilford Arms for choice. However, as I'm not that into my real ales the choice of drink was not much better than you would get in most pubs, but at a slightly higher than average price. Due to its central location. it can become quite busy in the evenings when the office workers finish and make use of the restaurant service. This added to the fact that it is located right next to a backpackers hostel means that there is a varied crowd, which actually adds to the atmosphere. read more

Placed in the centre of Edinburgh making it ideal for those out shopping or who have just arrived by train this place has always fascinated me, but more for its name than for anything else. You see my town back home is Guildford and after half heartedly researching I discovered nothing other than an attractive old pub, but never mind. This place is supposed to be very good for its real ales and I'm told they are very good, but I couldn't really give you a first hand opinion as despite visiting many real ale specialists back home I'm not a great fan of them and they all taste the same to me. Despite this I can recognise this, and rather ironically, for the traditional pubs back home you find out in the sticks that offer similar traditional drinks and atmosphere. Came in for both supper and lunch and was delighted with both meals. The service was prompt and friendly and the food was very good. The haggis stuffed chicken is my new favorite meal. The veggie Wellington is a great vegetarian option. We opted for dessert and had three cranachan and the Christmas pudding.
